Tomb of the Unknown Art #4

As I have mentioned once, twice or even thrice before, I received permission to use several of my unreleased pieces for self promotion on my blog, website and in my portfolio (if I so choose). The catch is I can't talk about what project they were for or what they are. Today I have my forth and (currently) final mystery piece can share with you. So, without any further delay I present... um... this turnaround...

This may be the final mystery piece I can show right now, but there is still a pile of work I did for WoTC that is just itching to make it out into the light of day. Hopefully in the not too very distant future I will be able to bring it to you. I hope you have enjoyed having a look at at these! They were fun to work on and very nice to finally be able to share them all with you.

That's it for another week, how time files! A lot of black and white this week, I must be busy! I will not be posting on this upcoming Monday, not only is it a national holiday I am going to try to observe but it is also my wife's birthday and there is much fun and excitement planned. The calm before the storm...

Or am I in the eye of the storm? Whichever it is I am briefly coming up for air today. I have a stack of work to get through in the coming weeks and I have a stack of work I am patiently sitting on that I am eager to share with you here. My brain is far too busy to figure out something to share with you today so this panda offered to come by and do the thinking for me. Unfortunately it is after all just a panda and can't come up with more then thoughts of bamboo...

Fresh from the drawing table... Axebird!

I have for you today another drawing that is fresh from the drawing table. This time around it is an Axebeak! Actually, there are two things wrong with what I just said... First, this one is not completely fresh, I in fact finished this one before the Bugbear and Chimera. I just found the other two a much more satisfying beginning to all this, as well as this would have been following quickly on the heals of another bird creature I had done. Secondly, can't really call this an Axebeak, somebody owns that name... so I give you, the Axebird.

Is it a bird? Is it a dinosaur? Is it a prehistoric proto-dinosaur bird? It is all that and more. It's got waddles! Anyway, I wanted to give the large prehistoric bird creature a fresh look through my eyes and this is what I came up with. After I get work paintings done in a month or so this feathered friend is first up to get some paint. Of course if more work comes in that will continue to get slide back. ...as is the way with these things.

When did this piece become four years old?!?! How time flies. Next you will be telling me that The Empire Strikes Back is 30 years old. Not much to say about this piece (or that I am allowed to say). Anyway... I imagined after you have cornered the kobolds and you were about to smite or capture they would scream out for "Tiny". This guy would come lumbering in to cause all sorts of havoc. Fun times.

That is all for another week. I have found myself busy with work again so my attentions will be pulled in several directions for the coming weeks. I will do my best to keep up the normal schedule. Also, the Highland expansion for Talisman is hitting the shelves as we speak. I have several pieces in the set and will be sharing them with you here as soon as I can! Until then...

Pathfinder Chronicles: Classic Treasures Revisited (part 2)

Wrapping up the work I did on the Sphere of Annihilation for Pathfinder Chronicles: Classic Treasures Revisited I have for you today some spot illustrations. If you missed the opener graphic, you can see it HERE. The three spot illustrations that I produced depict a trap, the sphere itself, and a Sphere of Annihilation rod or wand. Well... that is what I was told at least, I have yet to read the article...

Thought they might not be as explosive as a popping demon these pieces were fun to work on. I think I was having flash backs to my makeup effects days in LA when I designed the statue head. I may have made myself a mask that looked like that once, now that I look at it with fresh eyes.

Pathfinder Chronicles: Classic Treasures Revisited

As promised last week here is the first part of some recent work of mine to be released by Paizo. The work posted today and on Wednesday are from the newly released Pathfinder Chronicles: Classic Treasures Revisited. I worked with Sarah Robinson on these late last year and had a BLAST on the chapter opener for the Sphere of Annihilation!

Much like with tentacles, it is hard to go wrong with exploding demons! It is a real honor to share the pages of this book with so many other talented artists. Jeremy McHugh has some real stellar work in it. I think I want to push him down and steal his opener for the Deck of Many Things. ...wait, did I say that out loud?

Fresh from the drawing table... Chimera!

I have for you today another drawing that I finished up this week. This time around it is a Chimera! Abominations are so much fun to work on. A classic monster that still lends itself to being reinterpreted and seen anew.

The classical Chimera description and arrangement of animal parts is rather freaky in my opinion. I am all about weird abomination that flow and form together into something new, but a goat head smack dab stuck on the back of a lioness ...FREAKY! Makes no sense, hard to get your brain around. I can only wonder what this thing smells and sounds like. Whatever it is, it can't be good!
