Cackling Prowler - Magic the Gathering: Foundations

I am thrilled to share the second (and final) of my contributions to Foundations, the newest set for Magic the Gathering, which releases shotly. This time around we have the mighty Cackling Prowler, caught snacking on some poor small animal. Here is a look at the final art.

I will be sharing the process and steps for this piece another day, but for now, I have two originals available for this piece. As the final is digital, there is no painting, but all of my drawings and studies are traditional. Here are the final drawing and the tonal study for the Cackling Prowler.

I am thrilled to share the the first of my contributions to Foundations, the newest set for Magic the Gathering, which releases in November. First up is the mighty Cephalid Inkmage, using its ink magic to do ink magic things. Here is a look at the final art.

The Book of Many Things - Dungeons & Dragons

I feel like I am WAY behind on sharing these, but that is due to the book being delayed due to a printing issue. But now, after a bit of a wait, I have my comp copies, and I can now share my contribution to the recent Dungeons & Dragons release of The Book of Many Things (Which comes with the Deck of Many Things set). Here is said book that, in fact, contains many things!

The Book of Many Things!

You will find two of my illustrations in The Book of Many Things, one being a monster and the other being a man with some issues. The long and the short of it is that I made three pieces for this book, but due to travel, I was unable to see to some very late revision notes, and that third piece was replaced by another artist. At a later date, I hope to share that piece with you all, but that is for another day.

First up, we clearly have my favorite piece for the book, and likely for some time. It is Wanewort the Night Hag, and she has a pair of kitties. Not just any kitties, but she is holding my Mietze, and my wife's little Zemo is sniffing around Wanewort's dress. She was described as having two cats, and I asked if one of them could be changed in the final piece to be a little bitey orange kitty. Production gave their blessing, and so Mietze and Zemo are now in a D&D book! The second piece for the book is Boss Augustus, and he is struggling with an internal conflict. The weird thing about this one is that, while the entire thing was based on me, the drawing looks like someone I know, and the painting looks like another person I know. I'm not sure how this happened, but here we are all the same. Here are the final paintings for Wanewort and Boss Augustus.

As with all my D&D pieces, even though the final is digital, there are original drawings available. These are no exception, and I was pleased with how the drawings turned out. Here are the drawings for Wanewort and Boss Augustus. A word of advice: if there are any D&D pieces of mine that are coming out that you want the drawings for, you need to reach out to me as soon as possible.

Lastly, I have some photos of how the work looks in the book. I think they printed great, and now Mietze and Zemo are forever a part of D&D!

Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse - Dungeons & Dragons

The newest Dungeons & Dragons supplement, Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse, was recently released, and now that I am back from multiple events, I can share my contributions. I was lucky enough to have produced two pieces for the book. Planescape is the one realm of Dungeons & Dragons I never did anything with or for. I never had the original book, never played in the realm, and have little to no knoweldge of the lore. So, after all these years, it was nice to play in the world and make some monsters. These were both super fun to work on, and I was allowed a lot of room to design and have fun. Here are the final paintings for the Cranium Rats in Disguise and the Razorvine Blight.

Here are the drawings for the Cranium Rats in Disguise and Razorvine Blight. These both sold the day the book dropped. Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants - Fomorian Deep Crawler - Dungeons & Dragons

While I have shared work that I created for Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants recently, I have one additional piece to share. Without going into too much detail, the plagiarism algorithm was used on several pieces originally submitted for this book. When that became known as the book was being released, WotC took steps to correct this. To that end, artists were brought in to replace the work that had to be removed. These updated pieces will appear in all reprints of the book and will appear in all digital versions.  This was a rush job, to say the least, and I had only a few days to turn this piece around. I will go into more detail later, but for now, here is my version of the Fomorian Deep Crawler for Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants.

I will mention now that I never saw the version that I replaced. While I did look at the book at Gen Con, it was only to see how my three pieces printed and to get a photo of them in the book. I had planned to take in the rest of the book once my contributor copies arrived (which has still not happened). I am not sure if I will seek out the original version or not.

As with all my D&D pieces, even though the final is digital, there are original drawings available. These are no exception, and I was pleased with how the drawings from this book turned out. Here is the drawing for the Fomorian Deep Crawler.

Funny side note: of the four pieces I ultimately created for this book, this drawing is my favorite. Not sure why. I had the least amount of time to work on this one, but somehow, I feel like I spent more time on it and achieved a better end result. I will also mention that these images have been Glazed, so any minor artifacts you might detect are simply there for my artistic protection.

That's all for another exciting Monday on the blog. See you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants - Storm Crab - Dungeons & Dragons

The newest Dungeons & Dragons supplement, Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants, was released last week, and I was lucky enough to have contributed three pieces (soon to be four, but that is another conversation for another day) to the book. The three pieces I initially did for the book required me to design and illustrate new monsters, and as you might know, it is one of my favorite things to do. Lastly is the mighty Storm Crab - a massive dragon turtle eating crab beast. YUM! Here is the final painting for the Storm Crab.

Lastly, Here is a bad photo of the monster from the book. I took this photo at Gen Con. They printed great, and I couldn't be happier with them.

Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants - Runic Colossus - Dungeons & Dragons

The newest Dungeons & Dragons supplement, Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants, was released last week, and I was lucky enough to have contributed three pieces (soon to be four, but that is another conversation for another day) to the book. The three pieces I initially did for the book required me to design and illustrate new monsters, and as you might know, it is one of my favorite things to do. I will share these one at a time over the next three days. Next up is the mighty Runic Colossus - a massive statue covered in giant runes and shoots energy out of its hand. This might be my favorite of the first pieces. Here is the final painting for the Runic Colossus.

Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants - Gigant - Dungeons & Dragons

The newest Dungeons & Dragons supplement, Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants, was released last week, and I was lucky enough to have contributed three pieces (soon to be four, but that is another conversation for another day) to the book. The three pieces I initially did for the book required me to design and illustrate new monsters, and as you might know, it is one of my favorite things to do. I will share these one at a time over the next three days. Starting things off is the mighty Gigant - a massive insect that eats giants. How can you not love that?! Oh yeah, and a self-portrait at a hill giant for added fun. Here is the final painting for the Gigant.

Blufferfish - Magic: the Gathering - Unfinity

I have been waiting a long time to share this new Magic the Gathering art! Before the Monstrous War-Leech and the Bribe Taker, I created this piece, but as sometimes will happen, there were delays in the project, and what was to be the first of a three-card run has ended up the last of a three-card run. Now that Magic the Gathering: Unifinity is finally coming out, I can share the mighty Blufferfish. I was asked to depict a pufferfish-like creature swollen and working for the crowds. It needed to have glowing bits and a little attitude. This called for some very unflattering self-portrait reference images (that I will possibly share when I do the process post for this piece). I present to you the Blufferfish.

I had more time in my schedule when this piece rolled around, so not only did I have time for a tonal study, I was able to spend more time on the drawing and fully render it. A keen eye might notice a change between the drawing and the tonal study. I will share more about this when I do the process post.
