Fresh from the drawing table... Boar (Giant)!

I have for you another drawing that is fresh from the drawing table. This time around it is a Boar (Giant). The mundane monster of the letter "B" continue with another boar! There are three boars in the original Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual and today I have the last one, the Giant Boar. I present to you my version of a Boar (Giant)…

Of all the Boars in the Monster Manual the Giant Boar is clearly the most monstrous. Its size alone makes the Giant Boar a proper monster. It is the oldest trick in the book, make something really big and it becomes a monster. With the Giant Boar you also get giant bacon which can make the hunting of the Giant Boar and interesting side mission for the players. A village was pillaged my Kobolds and needs food badly. SIDE QUEST! Time to go hunt a Giant Boar to restock the larders in one hunt. ...and if the DM is lucky, that annoying wizard can get a face full of the business end of the Giant Boar.

My first 100 original Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual redesigns (A - Z): Aerial Servant, Ankheg, Ant (Giant), Ape (Carnivorous), Ape (Gorilla), Axe Beak, Axe Beak (version 2), Baboon, Badger, Barracuda, Basilisk, Baluchitherium, Bear (Black), Bear (Brown), Bear (Cave), Beaver (Giant), Beetle (Giant) - Bombardier, Beetle (Giant) - Boring, Beetle (Giant) - Fire, Beetle (Giant) - Rhinoceros, Beetle (Giant) - Stag, Beetle (Giant) - Water, Beholder, Black Pudding, Blink Dog, Boar (Giant), Boar (Warthog), Boar (Wild), Brain Mole, Brownie, Bugbear, Buffalo, Bulette, Carrion Crawler, Catoblepas, Cerebral Parasite, Chimera, Cockatrice, Coutal, Crab (Giant), Demon Type III (Glabrezu), Demon (Juiblex), Demon (Manes), Devil (Ice), Dragon (Red), Elemental (Earth), Ettin, Eye of the Deep, Flightless Bird, Frog (Giant), Fungi (Violet), Giant (Hill), Goblin, Golem (Flesh), Hobgoblin, Homunculus, Hydra, Imp, Intellect Devourer, Ixitxachitl, Jackal, Jacklewere, Jaguar, Ki-Rin, Kobold, Lich, Lizard (Giant), Lizardman, Manticore, Mind Flayer, Minotaur, Naga, Neo-Otygugh, Nixie, Ochre Jelly, Ogre, Owlbear, Peryton, Pixie, Purple Worm, Quasit, Ram (Giant), Roper, Rust Monster, Sahuagin, Salamander, Shambling Mound, Treant, Troglodyte, Troll, Umber Hulk, Unicorn, Vampire, Wasp (Giant), Wight, Wyvern, Xorn, Yeti, and Zombie.

Fresh from the drawing table... Boar (Wild)!

I have for you another drawing that is fresh from the drawing table. This time around it is a Boar (Wild). The mundane monster of the letter "B" continue with another boar! There are three boars in the original Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual and today I have the second one, the Wild Boar. I present to you my version of a Boar (Wild)…

The wild and formidable bacon monster. As eager to eat you as you are to eat it. Given the chance a bacon monster will eat you whole. I sometimes think that the mundane monsters of the original Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual are in there to allow the Dungeon Master to be master world builders or complete jerks. Did your party run out of food or wants to work on a particular skill like tracking? Throw in some Wild Boar to make things interesting and interactive. The DM and party tired of that level one wizards that seems way over powered and is wrecking the campaign? Death by boars while isolated from the rest of the party in the woods. ...of course, if you go by 1st Edition game mechanics, a domestic cat from the Monster Manual can kill a level one Wizard. RAWR!

Fresh from the drawing table... Boar (Warthog)!

I have for you another drawing that is fresh from the drawing table. This time around it is a Boar (Warthog)! Still making my way through "B" and all its mundane monsters. I have finally tackled the first of the three entries under 'Boar'. I present to you my version of a Boar (Warthog)…

I am always a little surprised by which mundane monsters have entries in the Monster Manual. Apparently there needed to be three Boars, one of which being the Warthog. When a normal Boar and and a Giant Boar won't do, you have the Warthog. ...RAWR! Make all your Lion King reference in you heads, please. I see the Warthog being there for comic relief, the party is chasing something or hiding from something and the underbrush begins to move and at the height of tension the Warthog come running out. There is also the need for a random animal to be hit by a spell turning it into some abomination or the party is starving and they go on a mini game of hunting. So many options for the little Warthog!

Zoo Atlanta Reference - Scale, Feather, and Fur

Today I have for you a new collection of photo reference that I took while visiting Zoo Atlanta on the return trip from Gen Con. It has become a yearly tradition to stop and check in on the pandas and all the other animals at the zoo after the best four days in gaming. This year offered up some great reference! Some of it was from animals previously encountered while other is from animals new to us at the zoo. I hope you find this reference as useful to you as I find it to me. Here is a selection of the best sixteen images (IMHO)...

Razor Boars - Hordes - Privateer Press

First post of 2014! Starting things off with something I managed to go pretty much all of 2013 without posting... partially because I never knew it had been released! I am usually more on top of when my work is released, but this one slipped by me. Here are my final designs for the Razor Boars for the Privateer miniatures games, Hordes...

Now if you are thinking to yourself that you are very familiar with the Hordes miniatures, but you don't recognize these at all while you may be familiar with the name... There are reasons for this. Here is what the production Razor Boars look like...

Looks like there were some additional edits, changes, and revisions after I turned in my designs! These things happen, while rare, it is inherit in the production of products like miniatures. Actually, most of the work for hire contracts that I sign state that the work I turn in is open to be revised, edited, or even changed out right by the client (read those contracts!). If this happened earlier in my career I would have been devastated and my ego crushed... thankfully my skin has gotten thinker and I have gotten a lot more caviler about the life span of my work once it leaves my hands. This only took five years and some really rough blows to my art self esteem.

As an added bonus, here are a bunch of my designs and concepts that went into the different parts and pieces of the Razor Boar...

That is all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog, see you back here on Friday! Until then...
