Phaerimm Miniature

Today, I have for you a miniature based on one of my illustrations. I updated the Phaerimm for the release of Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun. When I painted this piece, I hoped that there would be a miniature eventually made of it, and all I needed to do was be a little patient. To start things off, here is my illustration of the Phaerimm.

Here are some images of the miniature so that you can compare them to the painting. I love that they did a fairly good job of getting all the creepy hand positions in there. I think it turned out really well!

Gorgon Miniature

Today, I have for you a miniature based on one of my designs. I updated the Gorgon for the release of 5E. This is acutally the second release of a miniature for this design. An unpaintned version was released in 2021. This one is always a funny monster to me and is not the only time I have working on the Gorgon. To start things off, here is my design of the Gorgon

Revisiting the Wailing Writher

In 2009, I was hired to design a series of miniatures for Fantasy Flight Games. They were gearing up to make plastic minis of all of their Arkham Horror/Call of Cthulhu monsters, and I was at the right place at the right time to get the bulk of them. It was a fun project with a lot of freedom for a grotesquely small amount of pay. And then nothing. It wouldn't be until 2011/12 for the monsters to finally be released as unpainted figures in board game sets and as fully painted premium minis. By and large, they all turned out great, and I still look back at them favorably. As it has been 17 years since I made the art and 15 years since they were eventually released, I thought it would be nice to revisit some of them. Next up in alphabetical order, we have the Wailing Writher. Here is my design and the final miniature.

And, as an added bonus, something I have never shared before, here are the thumbnails that I created for this piece. Over the past 17 years, I had forgotten how loose and sketchy these were.

And, AND as another added bonus. Here is a piece I did a couple of years after this assignment, where I go to illustrate myself and the Crawling One for the Call of Cthulhu: Silver Twilight Lodge expansion. For the miniature design and the illustration, I started with established FFG designs for these monsters. I smoothed them out a little and added a lot of myself, but they are still on guide. I distinctly remember in the forums for this game that there were a few people who were not happy at all about the look of the Crawling One, and that it was wrong, as it doesn't look like this. I laughed and got back to making art and monsters. As a side note, this piece originally came out in 2011, but in 2020 (or thereabouts) it returned in the Arkham Horror expansion Final Hour.

A Second Look at Older Work - Zungar Priest

If you ever asked what I was drawing twenty years ago, this post is for you!

Today, I am sharing a miniature design that I did for the now long-dead miniatures game, Dreamblade. Dreamblade will always be near and dear to me, as it was the first game I ever worked on and one of the times I felt most free as an artist working in the gaming industry. This is the "Zungar Priest" design for an unproduced set of the game.

Unreleased Zungar Priest - © 2006 Wizards of the Coast

Zungar Priest turnaround - © 2006 Wizards of the Coast

The Zungar are specifically important to me in the game. I was tasked to design the Zungar for the very first set of the game. They had a description, but I was the one who brought them to life, and then I created a ton of head canon for them that I put into each piece. While I didn't design them all, in some later sets, others were brought into design some minis, but they were all based on my work. I did a lot of personal world-building for these weirdos, and loved every minute of it. I was practicing even then on building worlds and monsters.

That's all for another exciting Monday on the blog. See you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

A Second Look at Older Work - The Termite Head

And then it was 2026. This is going to be a very busy year for me, and because of this fact, I will likely be pulling back a bit from the blog. I will be sharing things from the past, keeping you updated as I can on what is keeping me so busy (more on that REALLY soon), and still doing my best to share my journey as an artist. But know that if things go quiet here, it is because a LOT of exciting things are happening behind the scenes.

Today, I am sharing a miniature design that I did for the now long-dead miniatures game, Dreamblade. Dreamblade will always be near and dear to me, as it was the first game I ever worked on and one of the times I felt most free as an artist working in the gaming industry. This was a one and done design for this particular assignment. I did one drawing, they loved it, and did the turnaround, and it was done. Always nice when that happens. But again, the feet, why are they so small? Why did I draw such small feet on things twenty years ago?

That's all for another exciting Monday on the blog. See you back here on Wednesday! Until then...
