Tiefling Armor Designs #1

Moving onto the Tiefling... Here are some of the female armor sets I created for the Dungeons and Dragons Character Visualizer. Really had to switch gears when it came to designing these after working on the Dragonborn sets. The craftsmanship and style are very different, not to mention that fact that the Tiefling have tails.

Unreleased Dreamblade - The rest of Set 6

And then there were three. Here are the final three pieces I designed for Dreamblade set 6, Serrated Dawn. One of these for sure made it into the set, one I am on the fence about and one I am confident did not make it. The Skydancer started a superstition I had about my work that I carried until recently. You might notice that I lean toward monsters and creatures in my work and there is not a lot of pretty, especially women and female forms. Several projects I worked on for Wizards of the Coast gave me the opportunity to work on pieces with women or at least very feminine monsters, this usually marked the end of these projects. No really. I did two female pieces in Serrated Dawn, the female armor I designed for the D&D Character Visualizer and a third project I can't mention on this blog that had a female monster. All of these (as of now) have never seen completion. This trend has since been broken (I think). Anyway... the “Diseased Angel” was described to me as a Valor piece with Fear elements which lends me to think it is the Putrid Princess, but I could be wrong. The rarity matches too, so until I learn otherwise I will stick with my guess. The last of the pieces I designed for Serrated Dawn was a Valor rare simply called "Samurai". Pretty straight forward and would most likely have been a cool miniature if all the details I put into it made their way into the sculpture.

Fear not! This is not the end. I have some more surprises and thing to share from my time on Dreamblade. Until then...

Thank you everyone!

I wanted to take today to thank everyone who has recently started following me on twitter as well as subscribing to my blog, be it through Facebook, Google or Blogspot, not to mention watching me on Deviantart. I have noticed and I greatly appreciate everyone's time and interest. I hope I provide interesting content and relevant information about the projects I work on and the methods I use to create my work. It means a lot to me, because I can't fathom why you all are doing it ;)

I know I have not had a lot of newer work to show lately, not for trying though, 2009 is looking like my busiest year yet. In many ways everything I have been showing lately is new to but a small group of people that worked on these projects. My newer work is coming, we all must be patient. I am rather shocked when I think about just how much I have been working on this year and really look forward to showing it all off when the times comes.

Enough of my yammering, I have a deadline on Friday followed by some really exciting stuff in September. Can't wait to get started on that work! Again, thank you everyone! I am humbled by your interest and comments. Since I can't leave you without something to look at, here are some of the drawing that went into the Dragonborn armor I worked on, enjoy!

If you look carefully you might see where some things changed between these approved sketches and the final paintings.

Dragonborn Armor Designs #4

Rounding out the Dragonborn armor I present the male plate, scale, warlock and wizard armor turnarounds. If you are thinking that the plate armor looks familiar, well you are correct, I used it as a basis for the armor I gave the Dragonborn Paladin of Bahamut miniature I designed for the Demon Web minis expansion. I hope you are not getting bored with armor yet, because we have just skimmed the surface. Next week I will most likely start with the Tiefling armor, unless something more exciting poops up!

I removed the helm and added a lot of additional surface detail but the over all shapes are the same. I wanted to help create a more inclusive world feel for the player. If they used the Character Visualize to create a Dragonborn wearing the plate armor I designed I wanted them to have the option to have a miniature that matched that look.

Unreleased Dreamblade - More from Set 6

Two new Dreamblade pieces that were designed for the unreleased set 6, Serrated Dawn. I had planned to post more today but I am under some fierce deadlines and the WoTC forums are down for an upgrade. The first, Blob with Body, appears to have not made the final cut. It was a common whose aspect was Fear. The second design may or may not be the Zungar Citadel. I have never had a location that I designed not make it into a set so I am fairly confident. The flavor text also adds a lot of credence to it being the Citadel. Just in case I have included the original name. The Citadel was a real pleasure to work on, at the time I designed these I really shied away from environment or architectural design. This allowed me to do both and I was really happy with how it turned out. Yet another design I was really hoping to see as a miniature.

Sneak Peak from Gen Con

I was not able to attend this year's Gen Con but I did try to keep my finger on the pulse of the convention through Twitter and Facebook. A post on Twitter from Fred Hicks caught my eye and I wanted to share it. I worked with Fred on the 6th Edition of the Hero System for Hero Games. This product was being premiered at Gen Con and Fred whipped up a postcard that he was handing out to direct people to the appropriate booth. Fred was kind enough to post a link on Twitter of the postcard and now I am sharing that image with you!

Oh! Look at the bottom right corner, what a fine looking lizard alien! The one next to the gorilla.

Here is a closeup to make it a little easier to see one of the pieces I did for 6th Edition.

Looks like they are going to be great looking books. I look forward to their release, which I understand is not too far off. You will hear about it right here when it happens as well as see the rest of the pieces that I did for these books. Here is the direct link to Fred's original post.

Dragonborn Armor Designs #3

The male Dragonborn need not feel left out any longer. Here is the first installment of the male Dragonborn armor that I designed for the Dungeons and Dragons Character Visualizer. With a few exceptions I think I am happier with how the female versions of the armor sets I designed turned out. The irony of this is not lost on me since I usually lean toward big hulking creatures (often mescaline) in my work and lean away from more feminine forms. Until next time...

Unreleased Dreamblade - Lost along the way

Today's look back at unreleased Dreamblade designs features one piece from each of the first four sets. With each of these I eagerly anticipated seeing the final miniature, imagining ahead of time that these would be my favorite above all other (no, really). Looking back now I begin to understand why they may have been dropped.

"Sword in the Stone" was designed for the very first set of Dreamblade. It was described as being an object. Looking back I imagine it was designed in the same vien as the Scarab Warcharm. Not necessarily a creature but would aid in other ways. It's aspect was Valor.

"Bound Rider" was a spec piece I came up with and submitted while working on Baxar's War. It was accepted, but fell through the cracks along the way. No idea what aspect it would or did have. It came to me one night as I was trying to fall asleep, it kept me up for hours as I drew it in my mind. I figured that was a good sign ...not good enough, I guess ;)

"Hairy Monster" was designed for Chrysotic Plague. I really thought it had a fun look and feel and would make a cool miniature. I had hopes it would have ended up being one of the really big minis like some of the pieces in Baxar's War that I designed. It's aspect was Passion.

"Hypnotic Freak" was designed for Anvilborn. Again, I thought this one had a really cool look and feel and would make a great mini. It was unlike many of the others I had designed for the game (to me at least). I really liked the little dangling harlequin that I put on the bottom back of her dress. It's aspect was Madness.

Dragonborn Armor Designs #2

Today's post is a second grouping of female Dragonborn armor. This completes all eight female armor variations that I was assigned to create for the Dungeons and Dragons Character Visualizer. There are male counterparts to all of these that should be showing up on the blog sometime next week. Until then...

Unreleased Dreamblade - Knights, Flags and Gears

Here are three previously unseen and unreleased Dreamblade miniature designs created for set 6, Serrated Dawn. Since the miniatures often had name changes during production I did my best to figure out if these in fact were slated for release. I am fairly confident that I matched up my designs with the final production names for the first two, Clarion Knight and Flagbearer which left the Gearman either pumped to set 7 or dropped all together. I really was hoping to get a Gearman. I worked with Art Director Peter Whitly on this set and he passed along some of the plans for Gearman's paint work. It was simple, but sounded really cool. All three were aspect Valor.

Dragonborn Armor Designs #1

You may remember that several weeks ago I finally gained permission to show off work I created for unreleased Wizards of the Coast products. Today I am sharing some of the armor I designed for the Dungeons and Dragons Character Visualizer. Under the art direction of Stacy Longstreet I had the opportunity to design armor for the Dragonborn, Tiefling, Genasi and Warforged races. Needless to say I generated a great deal of art while working on this project. So not to overwhelm anyone I will be spreading out my posts of armor designs. Without further ado, here are four turnarounds for female Dragonborn armor:
