Kaladesh Prerelease Recap

Over the weekend I took part in the prerelease events for Kaladesh at Gamescape in Tallahassee, Fl. It was a fun time out there Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Always exciting to see players opening their first packs of a new set and getting to see my cards for the first time. A HUGE thanks to Ben and Aras for having me out and for all the hospitality. Can't wait for the next time around. Here are some images from the weekend...

All set up and ready to go! Dear Wife is in attendance to help with crowd control.

Was asked to create a pair of Sliver tokens...

...always fun to draw these guys. RAWR!

Some Star Wars players came out as well to get some stuff signed!

One of the packs I opened had three of Sara Winters' great looking cards in it.

Finally got to hold my new cards in my hands. Don't think this moment will ever get old. I got to come home with two of my three cards...

...the third I had to sign and give back. In the fullness of time I have have my own.

The players are hard at playing.

Had an unexpected guest show up to check out my art.

All my prints of all my cards.

Even brought along some of my original work from the cards.

Got to sign my first cards from Conspiracy 2.

Even some older cards showed up to get signed at well.

Again, a HUGE thanks to Ben and Aras and to everyone that come out the prerelease this weekend. It was great to talk to you and a lot of fun.

Fretwork Colony - MtG - Kaladesh

As mentioned on Monday, the entire set of Kaladesh, the newest expansion to Magic the Gathering, was spoiled last week which means I can now share all of my cards coming out in this set. I have previously shared the Salivating Gremlins and Narnam Cobra. Today I am sharing the last of the three cards featured in Kaladesh. I present you with the Fretwork Colony...

A swarm of insects, both neat and challenging to create all at the same time. I was tasked with designing and illustrating these weevil-like creatures as they devour and destroy some buildings. I was a little uncertain about this piece when it was all said and done, but looking back at it now, I think it definitely gets the job done. I will share more about this piece in the fullness of time when I break down the process and steps. A HUGE thanks goes out to Cynthia Sheppard for the Fretwork Colony assignment!

While the final for this piece was digital, the original drawings associated with this piece will debut at Illuxcon 2016 the week of Oct 19 - 23. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in making an offer ahead of time. Prints will be available soon and artist proofs will be available once the set is released and I receive them. Here is a look at the final card version of the Fretwork Colony...

Narnam Cobra - MtG - Kaladesh

The entire set of Kaladesh, the newest expansion to Magic the Gathering, was spoiled last week which means I can now share the rest of my cards coming out in this set. I have a total of three cards in Kaladesh. I shared the first card, Salivating Gremlins, with you last week and I have one for you today and the last will be up on Wednesday. I present you with the Narnam Cobra...

The Narnam Cobra was a blast to work on. Not only did I get to design the cobra, but this is my first artifact card for Magic. Really wanted to try something a little different with this one... not sure how different it ended up being, but I am happy with the results. I will share more about this piece in the fullness of time when I break down the process and steps. A HUGE thanks goes out to Cynthia Sheppard for the Narnam Cobra assignment!

Looking Back: Gateway to Psychosis - Dreamblade

I was recently reminded that the Dreamblade miniature game celebrated its 10 year anniversary recently. Too bad the game was cancelled almost 9 years ago. As you may know I did a lot of work on this game and it was both my first project in the gaming industry and my first job with Wizards of the Coast. After all these years I have yet to share all the work that I have done on Dreamblade. This has some to do with the lack of a blog or Facebook back in 2006, a lingering (misplaced) embarrassment for my older work, and the fact I forget that I STILL have work sitting around. I thought it would be fun to dig up some of the piece I have never shared anywhere and go ahead and post them on my blog from time to time over the coming months. To start things off, here is my design for the Gateway to Psychosis that I originally created in 2005 and was part of the first series of Dreamblade miniatures...

This was a weird one. It was a Land miniature and effected the location on the board that it held. They wanted this one to be a crazy door opening with tons of tentacles and crazy stuff pouring out. The walls needed to be covered in reliefs of madness and chaos. The Land minis come late in the production of the first set of Dreamblade. I never knew if they were part of a second wave of concepts, a late addition to the game mechanics, or if someone else passed on them and they came to me late. I was so green and clueless back then and I was still developing my drawing style, it is amazing I ever got anything approved or finished. But somehow I did and every moment was exciting and new and I was learning SO much about design, drawings, and my own limits when it came to making art. Here is a look at the entire turnaround with the reliefs for the back of the wall...

I was really happy with how the final miniature turned out. At this time in my career it was not uncommon for the miniature I was design to evolve a little further after the designs left my hands. A little extra bend here, a little extra twist there... to make them work better as a mini. Case in point with this one, the door was opened a bit more to make it a better looking miniature...

Gateway to Psychosis Miniature

I was always amazed how faithful some of the sculptures were with my scribbling. All the crazy relief line work I did more or less made it into the final miniature. For better or for worse. I know now I REALLY needed to have made all that stuff a bit larger and more simple, but it somehow turned out and they got it all in there. Here is a look at both sides of the Gateway to Psychosis miniature...

Gateway to Psychosis Miniature

I was rather gonzo for Dreamblade when it came out. It was my first gaming project, it was miniatures, and it was one of the first professional art projects that I worked on where my individual creative voice could be seen. I scoured the web for announcements, poured over every articles, read every magazine story, and in general looked for any and all signs of my miniatures. This led me to finding some interesting things. Here is a production images of the Gateway to Psychosis miniature that was part of a preview article on the WotC website back in 2006. The article and site are all gone, but I saved as much as I could...

Salivating Gremlins - MtG - Kaladesh

I had a new Magic the Gathering piece spoiled yesterday! This time around it is for Kaladesh, the new expansion that will be out in a few weeks. I present you with the Salivating Gremlins...

This piece was a ton of fun to work on and is my first card for red. The Gremlins are a really fun design and I was extremely glad to have had the chance to play around with them as they NOM'd on some artifacts. The salivating was not part of the art order, so it is really cool to see that my art influenced the final incarnation of the card. I will share more about this piece in the fullness of time when I break down the process and steps. A HUGE thanks goes out to Dawn Murin for the Salivating Gremlins assignment!

Space Coast Comic Con 2016 Recap

We have returned from another fun filled weekend at the Space Coast Comic Con. First, I want to thank David Grace for inviting me to return as a guest artist at SCCC 2016... many many thanks! Second, thank you to everyone who came by the booth over the weekend, shared their stories, took home monsters, and in general, made for a very special weekend. This was their second year as a con and it was super fun. Looking forward to seeing what they have in store for year 3. This time around it was a three day con with a half day on Friday and then a full day on Saturday and Sunday. Got to talk to a lot of people about my work and had some very interesting interactions. There was one kid who was just not able to accept my interpretations of Pokemon and was getting more and more worked up and upset by them. Fun times! All and all, it was a fun weekend at the SPCC and here are some images from my adventures at my table...

All set up and ready to go!

My vantage point from my table. This is what I saw for 90% of the weekend.

A very thin Zuckuss was on the scene.

A wild Umbreon has appeared!

Some of the Empire's finest.

Got to meet a bounty hunter that is near and dear to me.

There were just a *FEW* Star Wars costumes at SPCC.

Tugg was back at SPCC.

A very neat NASA Tom Servo was attending SPCC.

Floridian zombie hunter.

This was the ceiling of the vendor room for the weekend thanks to the MC set up next to me.

Some chalk art that took shape over the weekend.

The front entrance of the hotel and spill over area for vendors.

I got away from my table for a set and took some pictures...

If there had been room in the car this R2 may have come home with us.

Zombie cage.

A wild Blastoise has appeared!

One last look around on a busy Sunday afternoon.

Cardboard Transformer realness.
