Holiday Monday Monster

Today is a holiday and I am most likely working on some thumbnails for something you won't see till next year. I had not planned a blog post for today because of said holiday, but then this little guy expressed some interest in making an appearance. I figured a little monster drawing is better then nothing so I agreed. Here is the Holiday Monday Monster...

Fresh from the drawing table... Crocodile (Normal)!

I have for you another drawing that is fresh from the drawing table. This time around it is a Crocodile (Normal)! Nearly at the end of the "C" monsters we arrive at a very pudgy crocodilian. This of course means the GIANT crocodile is next which is also the LAST of the "C" monsters. I present to you my version of a Crocodile (Normal)…

The regular ole mundane crocodile is sought for their lavish horde of treasure. Depending on the size of the crocodile they have a large horde of crocodile hide armor, crocodile hide boots, crocodile hide belts, crocodile hide pouches, and crocodile bone weapons. Just kidding, these things only exist so that they can jump out of the water suddenly to attack player characters and in turn be XP for said characters. All the crocodile hopes for is to be left long enough to have a rich and fulfilling crocodile life. It might sound like a sweet gig when the goblin come and offer you your own swimming pool in the bottom of a dungeon, but really you are shortening your life considerably cause you are just a meat trap waiting to happen.

Kickstarter Roundup - Chris Seaman, Ralph Horsley, & Artorder

Today I have for you three active Kickstarters that you should check out if you already haven't. All three are from folks near and dear to me and I would really like to see their projects funded and their dreams made reality.

First up, Cameo Creeps by Chris Seaman! I LOVE these miniature monster portraits. Love them so much we own three of the originals and proudly display them. Now is your chance to get your hands on an original or any number of the reproductions. I can not express enough how cool these are.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/chrisseamanart/cameo-creeps-tiny-monster-paintings
Go get yours today!

Second, Wildborn by Ralph Horsley! Ralph had been working on a series of dragon paintings that feature dragons in their natural habitats for a number of years now and he is finally collecting them into one book. I am a big fan of these pieces as well. The very first piece of art my wife ever bought was one of the very first Wildborn pieces Ralph created. It is the dragon by the waterfall in the image below. It is still most likely my wife's favorite piece that we own. I can't wait to see and have the finished book.

You know you need more dragons in your life!

Last, but not least, ArtOrder Invitational: The Journal art book by Artorder (Jon Schindehette)! Jon have been working on this for two years and brings together a very impressive group of artists who will be sharing their work and creative process in this journal. This looks amazing and should be interesting for artist and non artist alike. My words will fail at how cool this is, you just need to follow the links and check it out yourself. This is one not to miss.

I hope you take a few moments and go check these out and hopefully find one or all of them worthy of support. Like I said, these are all being done by people near and dear to me and I hope they see funding.

That is all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog, see you back here on Friday! Until then...

MerMay - Breaching Mermaid

Cutting it close to actually get a drawing done for a monthly theme... again. This time around the theme was mermaids with the clever name, MerMay. Naught for trying I finally got one finished. For some reason, it was like pulling teeth to get a MerMay drawing across the finishing line. MANY drawings died along the way and will never be spoken of again. Not really super happy with this one as it is, but it is finished. I like lots of its parts, but not the whole. Oh well, can always try it again and throw away a bunch more paper in the process. Here is my (first? last?) contribution to MerMay...

Art vs Artist

There is a meme going around this week matching up an image of the artist surrounded by several pieces of their work. I think the art is meant to show the intentional and unintentional way people's art turn into self portraits. I have never hid the fact that all my monsters are self portraits and in the way using myself as all the monsters is a running theme through my work. I have, am, and will continue to be all the monsters. Here is my submission for #artvsartist...

Art vs Artist
I am all the monsters, one way or another.

Speaking of reference, here are some of the images that went into the above monsters. Some of these you may have seen and at least one has never been shared. I did omit one reference image, but I don't think the over all selection is diminished for it. I find that physically getting into the shoes, or claws, of the character through photo reference really helps me channel the character and get my head around the illustration I am beginning to work on. Acting out the character helps resolve many potential problems as well as leading to many unexpected ideas that working on paper just does not bring. Not to mention all the invaluable reference that the photos provide.

Trandoshan Hunter - Star Wars - Process

Today I have for you a look at the process and steps that went into a piece that is well overdue. I first shared the Trandoshan Hunters with you back in June of 2015. These two space lizards were created for the Imperial Assault 2015 Summer Organized Play Kit as well as being the third time my art was used for this particular card. Let's have a look at the finished piece...

Thumbnails are and will forever be the first step in the process. I shoot reference and work up some concepts based on the art order. Inevitably, I will get the bleed and padding wrong, so having the thumbnail stage allows for quick and easy readjustment as I move onto the final drawing. No matter how much bleed I give my thumbnails, no matter how close I think I am sticking to the templates, I never seem to get it right. Oh well... at least I think I get it pretty close. Here are how the final thumbnails turned out for this piece...

So fierce! Look at those angry angry space lizards! To get in the spirit and mood of some feisty Trandoshans I shot a bunch of reference with the help of Dear Wife. I like to move around and get into the skin of my monsters before I start working on them. Getting in front of the camera allows me to work out the composition in real space and get all the details, lighting, and foreshortening worked out ahead of time. No matter how much I plan ahead before shooting reference we will always come up with better poses and elements when I shoot reference first. Here is but a few of the many reference images that went into this piece...

Trandoshan Hunter -Reference

Option 'C' of the thumbnails was picked by production and I was given the go ahead to move onto the final drawing... as long as I added some additional bleed to the piece... which turned into even more since I was painting this piece at a standard size which is larger the the dimensions this piece needed to be at. All that said, here is the final drawing for the Trandoshan Hunter...

The drawing was approved and I was all set to move onto the painting. For this piece I wanted to do something different from all the pieces I had been working on. Many of the pieces were either green or blue in overall color and temperature. I wanted to do something very different and a lot more red... or kind of pink. I wanted this piece to be warm in comparison to the cool feel many of my pieces have. Here is the painting coming together...

Trandoshan Hunter - Process progression

In just 17 easy steps you too can have a Trandoshan Hunter painting. Or not. Even though this was an early piece for me in the scheme of things it came together in a rather straight forward manor. There was a lot of pushing and pulling to get the image to be where I wanted it to be, but that is part of the process. I just kept at it and the piece took shape a little at a time. To make it easier to see the piece coming together, here is an animated progression of the painting...

Trandoshan Hunter - Animated process progression

No real horror stories on this one. The painting came together and was approved without revisions. Here again is the final painting and the card that it was used on...

Forest Awareness - Star Wars LCG: Press the Attack

This past week saw the release of Press the Attack, the newest expansion to the Star Wars Card Game, which means I now can share another new piece of Star Wars art. I say new, but I painted this way back in February of 2015 and it is just now being released. Good things come to those that wait? No matter, because the wait for Forest Awareness (featuring Teebo) is now over...

This piece was rather open ended when it was assigned to me. It called for an Ewok doing something that show it looking proficient in the ways of the forest. Some of the suggestions from production were to have the Ewok leading a Rebel soldier though the forest, an Ewok tracking something, or an Ewok hunting... anything that made the Ewok look like it knows what it is doing. The Ewok choice was also up to me so I of course wanted to pick one of the named Ewoks from Return of the Jedi. Teebo was the first to come to mind since he is a master hunter and tracker. Teebo tracking animal tracks in the forest ended up being the focus of the final piece. And I of course had to put blood on Teebo's club since Ewoks are blood thirsty predators.

I will have more to share with this piece in the near future when I share the process that went into it. For now, here is a look at the printed card...

Free Comic Book Day 2016 Recap

This past Saturday was Free Comic Book Day. The good folks at Fallout Comic invited me back out for the day and I was thrilled to return. There was a lot of comic books, super heroes, droids, Stormtroopers, talk of Captain America: Civil War, and fun to be had on Saturday. It was a lot of fun and a big thanks goes out to everyone at Fallout for including me! Also, a big thanks to everyone that came out to see me!

I brought more with me then I ever had, so I really had to hustle to get completely set up in only an hour. Usually my set up takes several hours, but I guess I am getting better at doing this sort of thing. In record time I had my wall up, art and prints out, and ready for the doors to open. When I am a mile from the comic shop it is hard not to bring everything! I am sure it is overkill, but... I still do it anyway.

Here are some images from the days events at Fallout Comics for Free Comic Book Day 2015...

Bringing the convention presence to Free Comic Book Day for a special 6 hour event!

Stormtrooper husks. Every sprint the Stormtrooper molts and grows a new shell.

More Stormtrooper bits... and comic books.

One of my favorite Stormtroopers stopped by again this year to celebrate FCBD.

Walking and talking Stormtrooper reference.

My C-3PO sketch cover went to a forever home! RAWR!

My view for all of Free Comic Book Day. There were just different amounts of people. Sometimes a LOT more and sometimes this many. Everybody loves Free Comic Book Day.

The $1 comic bins! Everyone got to pick out one of these for free as part of FCBD.
I looked through some of the boxes but never found the right one for me. You need to make sure you find the right fit with an old comic.

Another successful  Free Comic Book Day! We will hopefully see you back out there next year!

C-3PO Marvel Sketch Cover and Free Comic Book Day

Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day and as I previously announced I will be at Fallout Comics. As part of the FCBD festivities I did a mixed media piece on a blank cover release of C-3PO #001 that came out from Marvel Comics a couple weeks ago. Those attending FCBD at Fallout Comics will be the first to give this piece a forever home after that it will be available on my store if I still have it. Here is a look at the final cover...

This was a really fun low stress piece to work on. It was also very fun to play around with three different material on one piece. This was also a great chance to do a study of my C-3PO 12" figure from the 90's. I don't do a lot of mechanical pieces so this was a fun departure. Hopefully this will be well received and give me a chance to do more of these sketch covers from the Star Wars comics. It was sure a lot of fun to make!

I made sure to capture some images of the cover coming together, so here are some images of the piece coming together as well as an animated progression to better show the difference from step to step. I worked up entire piece in Copic Marker first then went in with pencil. I worked up the entire piece after that going back and forth between marker and pencil. Finally I went in with acrylic paint to punch up the highlights and finish it all off.

May the 4th - Star Wars Recap!

It is May 4th... or May the forth... or May THE 4th... or however it is suppose to be said. I guess whatever sounds most like 'may the force'. That said, I really didn't know what to do with the blog today and I have a bit going on, so I thought I would take advantage of the date and share a bunch of my Star Wars work that I have produced over the last five years. If you are so inclined, a bunch of it is even available for sale! I will get back to my work and I will leave you with a bunch of Star Wars paintings, enjoy!
