2024 Holiday Card - May your holidays be filled with surprises!

Another year and another holiday card. This year's card came late and became the first in our series to be a postcard. Frankly, the cost of printing our cards has increased greatly, and it came time to switch to a postcard rather than a card and envelope. The 2024 card idea came from dear wife, and it was a fun (and quick) one to do. I present you with: May your holidays be filled with surprises!

2022 Holiday Card - May holiday greetings come from near and far!

Another year and another holiday card. After some discussion regarding the theme of this year's card, we decided to go in a different direction than previous years. It is still a monster, but this time it is a SPACE monster, so it is totally different. This happy fellow brings glad tidings from space and hopes you may join him on his adventures. I present you with May holiday greetings come from near and far!

Lastly, here are the card exterior and interior so you can get a feel for what it looks like in its entirety. This was another fun piece to make, and I hope it was enjoyed by all! I should start thinking about what I want to do for next year, but that will likely not happen until October or November.

2021 Holiday Card - May your holidays be something to behold!

Unexpected additional blog post! I had forgotten I hadn't posted this yet, so here we are...

Another year and another holiday card. While I had thought about continuing in the Florida animal theme that I established last year, I ended up going in a different direction. After some discussion with Dear Wife, we settled on something near and dear to me, which would be fun for the holidays. Because nothing says happy holidays like a multi-eyed aberration from an extra-dimensional plane of reality. I present you with May your holidays be something to behold!

2020 Holiday Card - Seasons Eatings!

2020 has been a unique year, and when it came time for this year's holiday card, I didn't know if I had it in me to make one, let alone come up with an idea. Since it has been a tradition for so long, and it being 2020, it felt like a bad year to skip a card. I decided to do something that would be fun, near and dear to me, and likely well-received. This resulted in a festive alligator with its sack of goodies. Wishing you all the best as 2020 comes to an end, and I hope that 2021 will bring us change. I present you with Season Eatings!

2019 Holiday Card - Elder Greetings

Our holiday cards went out late this past December. To allow that they reached their destinations without spoiling the card for everyone, I decided to give as much time as possible before sharing the art. I wanted to do something a bit more creepy this year, and I hopefully hit the mark with these Elder Greetings. I think the piece speaks for itself, and it was a lot of fun to create.

2018 Holiday Card - Xandrell Christmas Tree

Hopefully, all of our cards have made their way to their intended destinations, and I won't be spoiling anyone's holiday wishes. That said, I wanted to share our 2018 holiday card today. The Xandrell Christmas Tree brings tidings and holiday wishes from The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia. Hoping that the unexpected finds you in the coming year in the best way possible!

I created a new drawing of the Christmas tree to add to my existing Xandrell Tree drawing that I created last year for The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia. Dear Wife suggested the idea since I was hoping to use one of my Grand Bazaar pieces for the card this year. This is actually the second time a Grand Bazaar piece was used. The Belled Kreep was featured on the 2014 holiday card. Here is the original Xandrell Tree drawing...

A Little Late... 2017 Holiday Card - Bes

Somehow I forgot to post the art that I did for our 2017 holiday card. Usually I post it in mid to late December after the cards have all gone out and hopefully received. This year it seems to have slipped though the cracks. Which is funny, since I got the art done ahead of schedule and I even think the cards were in the mail early too.

For 2017 I decided to depict an Egyptian God that I had never known about. While in Paris this past year I saw many depictions of Bes at the Louvre. Not sure how I had never come across Bes before, but I hadn't... until now. I was instantly enamored with Bes and knew I HAD to do a drawing related to him. The holiday card seemed like a good fit. This past year we hoped that everyone's holiday season was the Bes!

Holiday Monday Monster

Today is a holiday and I am most likely working on some thumbnails for something you won't see till next year. I had not planned a blog post for today because of said holiday, but then this little guy expressed some interest in making an appearance. I figured a little monster drawing is better then nothing so I agreed. Here is the Holiday Monday Monster...

Aberrant Stilter - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

Recently I have shared with you my Gray Wanderer, Corrupted Knight, Smokestack, and Belled Kreep monsters. Today, I have for you the fifth piece in this series. This piece was finished this past weekend and continues to be at the new larger scale. I present you with the Aberrant Stilter.

The Aberrant Stilter is one of three monsters I designed once returning home from Illuxcon this year and is the second to be completed. The Belled Kreep was the first of these new monsters. I allowed people on Facebook to vote on which I would draw, based on just the name. The Aberrant Stilter received the second most votes.

Here are all the other completed monsters for The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia: Aberrant Stilter, Belled Kreep, Corrupted Knight, Dight-Kin, Eau-de-nil Elder, Ethra VanDalia, Footman, Gray Wanderer, Gullet, Humgruffin Mother, Irritated Girasol, Judicator, Kiplorbic Animal Dealer, Lammergeier Transport, Myopic Riflemen, Nimsbane Curse Victim, Ophiomornous Bureaucrat, Petrous Blacksmith, Quincaillerie, Saint Marque, Smokestack, Thrice, Uncanny Scribe, Virulent Artificer, Xandrell Tree, Yote Arms Dealer, and Zombic Spore.

Further details on this piece, like all of these personal monsters on toned paper, will have to wait for another day and, hopefully, a different type of information interface. Fear naught, all will be revealed in the fullness of time. As a bonus, here are some images of the piece as I worked on it.

All images © 2014 Christopher Burdett

I have three videos of time-lapse drawing sessions over on YouTube if you want to see the image being actively worked on. If you have a chance check out VIDEO 1, VIDEO 2, and VIDEO 3.

That is all for another exciting Monday. See you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

Yucatan Monster Reference

Today is a holiday in these parts so I am letting the monsters run the blog today. To that end, they have decided to share some monster reference that I took during my recent trip to the Yucatan. Turtles, iguanas, and coati... OH MY! Lots of wonderful scale and pattern information in some of these as well as some movement reference in two videos! Hope you enjoy...

Video time! The iguanas at Tulum were the most mild mannered and allowed me to get the closest. Because of that, here are a pair of videos showing an iguana in action, doing his thing...
