A Second Look at Older Work - Civilized Naga

This coming June will mark twenty years for me in the gaming industry, and this is also my twenty-sixth year as a working artist. I have made a lot of work over these years, and as I focus on larger projects with multi-year timelines, it is hard to keep this blog updated regularly. I have kept this thing going since 2009, and I would like for it to continue. To that end, I thought I would look back at works I particularly liked, enjoyed making, or seemed to fall through the cracks and went unnoticed.

Today, I have ANOTHER piece for Pathfinder done for Paizo fifteen years ago. Things are SUPER busy, so we are looking back again. This was always a fun piece for me. As with the Troll Auger,  I was starting to figure out a lot about painting, using reference, and what it takes to get a good image. I make monsters, it should be obvious by now, and one of the things I really like about making monsters is presenting them in non traditional ways. Sure, big scary monster saying 'RAWR' is fun, but showing what they do when they have alone time is ever better. This Naga thinks they are very pretty, and I support that type of monster energy.

As a side note, when looking back at this piece, I realized I never shared a process post for it. Not sure that sharing it now would help anyone, but it's interesting that I never took the time to post more about this one.

That's all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog. See you back here Friday! Until then...

Fresh from the drawing table... Naga!

I have for you today another drawing that is fresh from the drawing table. This time around it is a Naga! "N" was a little lean on choices. Not really sure what a Nixie is, but I was not having any of that. Once again there was a clear choice for my sensibilities and the Naga was selected above all others. I present to you my version of a Naga...

Earlier this year I did a Naga... or in this case a Wormfolk piece for Paizo and it had gotten my gears turning in regards to these snake monsters. The Paizo Naga has a very distinct look so I was not in danger of being too influenced by it, but I did know I wanted to go with a scaly plated monster look. A human head on a snake body is just too on the nose and hopefully I have succeeded in adding another layer to this classic monster.

My first 100 original Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual redesigns (A - Z): Aerial Servant, Ankheg, Ant (Giant), Ape (Carnivorous), Ape (Gorilla), Axe Beak, Axe Beak (version 2), Baboon, Badger, Barracuda, Basilisk, Baluchitherium, Bear (Black), Bear (Brown), Bear (Cave), Beaver (Giant), Beetle (Giant) - Bombardier, Beetle (Giant) - Boring, Beetle (Giant) - Fire, Beetle (Giant) - Rhinoceros, Beetle (Giant) - Stag, Beetle (Giant) - Water, Beholder, Black Pudding, Blink Dog, Boar (Giant), Boar (Warthog), Boar (Wild), Brain Mole, Brownie, Bugbear, Buffalo, Bulette, Carrion Crawler, Catoblepas, Cerebral Parasite, Chimera, Cockatrice, Coutal, Crab (Giant), Demon Type III (Glabrezu), Demon (Juiblex), Demon (Manes), Devil (Ice), Dragon (Red), Elemental (Earth), Ettin, Eye of the Deep, Flightless Bird, Frog (Giant), Fungi (Violet), Giant (Hill), Goblin, Golem (Flesh), Hobgoblin, Homunculus, Hydra, Imp, Intellect Devourer, Ixitxachitl, Jackal, Jacklewere, Jaguar, Ki-Rin, Kobold, Lich, Lizard (Giant), Lizardman, Manticore, Mind Flayer, Minotaur, Naga, Neo-Otygugh, Nixie, Ochre Jelly, Ogre, Owlbear, Peryton, Pixie, Purple Worm, Quasit, Ram (Giant), Roper, Rust Monster, Sahuagin, Salamander, Shambling Mound, Treant, Troglodyte, Troll, Umber Hulk, Unicorn, Vampire, Wasp (Giant), Wight, Wyvern, Xorn, Yeti, and Zombie.

Pathfinder Chronicles: City of Strangers (part 1)

These are a long time in coming. Pathfinder Chronicles: City of Strangers was actually released in stores before Gen Con and I just got my copies last week. I am happy to finally be able to share the work I did on this release from Paizo Publishing. I produced a mix of character shots for this book, I will save the people for later in the week and just jump into the good stuff... THE MONSTERS!

I had SO much fun with that Troll. I think it is possibly one of if not the favorite piece I have produced for Paizo. A big monster AND guts... it is a win/win situation. I went a little nuts on the skin texture, but that is kind of becoming my thing these days. In all seriousness, a big thanks to Sarah Robinson for thinking of me for these pieces. I can not ask for better images to have to create!

GEEK NIGHT 2010 is coming! I will have an official post about it this week. Mark your calendars, Sept 24th 8:30 pm on the campus of Florida State University!

That is all for today. I will have some humans and some info on Geek Night for you later in the week! Until then...
