Narnam Cobra - MtG - Kaladesh

The entire set of Kaladesh, the newest expansion to Magic the Gathering, was spoiled last week which means I can now share the rest of my cards coming out in this set. I have a total of three cards in Kaladesh. I shared the first card, Salivating Gremlins, with you last week and I have one for you today and the last will be up on Wednesday. The Narnam Cobra was a blast to work on. Not only did I get to design the cobra, but this is my first artifact card for Magic. Really wanted to try something a little different with this one... not sure how different it ended up being, but I am happy with the results. I will share more about this piece in the fullness of time when I break down the process and steps. A HUGE thanks goes out to Cynthia Sheppard for the Narnam Cobra assignment!

While the final for this piece was digital, the original drawings associated with this piece will debut at Illuxcon 2016 the week of Oct 19 - 23. Fresh from the drawing table... Coutal!

I have for you another drawing that is fresh from the drawing table. This time around it is a Coutal! Continuing with "C" monsters, I have for you today and mighty feathered serpent inspired from the beliefs from Central America. I present to you my version of a Coutal…

I like scales, but I am not necessarily a fan of feathers in the same way I am not necessarily a fan of fur. Scales though, are fun. So a Coutal gives me some of what I like and some of what I don't go running for. When I visited the Yucatan I saw many images and sculptures of serpents and feathered serpents. Those images stuck around with me and I keep them in mind as I designed my version of the Coutal. Not sure if a crazed wizard had anything to do with this or if the Coutal just kinda happened on their own. Weird stuff slips in from other realities all the time. Maybe there is another world where the highest form of life is feathered snakes...

Recent reference images...

It is one of those days... weeks... AND months. I have some great questions from readers I need to answer... well, I need to make the time to answer them and get together the content associated with them. I have new work coming out soon... but I am still waiting. I have been super busy drawing and painting lately... on work I won't be able to share for a while.

What I am getting at with all this rambling? As the year comes to a close it can get a little hard to stay on top of everything, especially this ole blog that gets updated thrice weekly. The backlog of already written and created content is running on empty and there can be a bit of a scramble to keep up with things here. Looking at the blog this morning I just didn't know what I wanted to do with it so I decided to share some recent monster... er, I mean animal reference I gathered over the weekend at the local natural history and historical museum. I hope you find them as helpful as I do! Enjoy...
