From the Vaults - Toned Paper Sketches

I stumbled upon a folder of sketchbook scans from a decade ago. I believe these were done as warm-ups and breaks while at the Illustration Master Class in 2013. As far as I can tell, I have never shared these. I have scoured this blog and can find no trace of them, so I will consider them unseen for ten years. I have never been able to manage a sketchbook for long. I either lose interest or move on to larger pieces that need my full attention. For most of my life, I have felt that if I have time to sketch, then I have time to work on a finished project. Yes, you do gain a lot from sketching, but those experiences for me have been worked into my process for making art. Hopefully, this means that I am not losing out on too much by not keeping this type of thing going. I think that is all I can say about these, save that some of these drawings would be very much at home in the Grand Bazaar.

Dragon+ 24 - The Return of Oso

It recently came to my attention that I was credit in Dragon+ 24. I was a little confused since I did not remember working on an assignment for Dragon+, so it had to be a reuse of my work. I went to investigate and ended up going down a rabbit hole that led to ten years ago.

Well, my name is in the credits of Dragon+, so my work has to be in here.

I have searched the issue three times, and nothing is jumping out at me. This section on familiars seems like a good fit for my art, but I am just not seeing it.

Oh, look, it is Oso, the bear. Oh, wait... oh no! Not that... anything but that...

Yup, a ten-year-old color pencil doodle of Oso that I did for ArtOrder has turned up on an official Dungeons & Dragons product. Great... At least I have a long list of D&D credits to my name and a stack of art to show that this is not my typical work, even with it being ten years old. Goes to show you that you never know where and when something you worked on will show up in print.

You can read more about Oso the bear and what this was initially created for over on a ten-year-old blog post. This was the last thing I ever expected to see pop up on a D&D product, and I am a little embarrassed, but what can you do about it now. I guess it is legit and official now.

That is all for another exciting Thursday on the blog, see you back here on Friday! Until then...

Airport Scribbling

The internet is still down at the house and I am getting lots of ducks in rows, so a quick blog post today. While traveling at the beginning of the week I had lots of down time in airports and on planes. All this free time meant there would be scribbling on paper in monster form. Here is what came of all my scribbling...

And then there were 800!

How time flies when you are having fun and making monsters...

Another milestone on the blog today, this is my 800th post! I am a little dumbstruck by this number... but it had to happen eventually if I keep posting. It seems like I was just posting about it being 700 posts... where does the time go?

I am still getting my thoughts and words together for my 2013 year in review post. What did 2013 teach me? Find out soon here on the blog! For now, have a look at some of the sketches that have been going out in my sketchbooks recently...

Thanks again to all of you out there that frequent the blog. Sometime I wonder what the heck I am doing, but knowing you are all out there in the internets checking in on my ranting and ravings I am given the determination to keep this all going. RAWR!

Once more unto the breach...

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;

It's that time again... no, actually it has been this time since January. Everything and everyone is screaming for twice as much time as I have to give, and this extends well beyond just making monsters. I can't believe it is already April. If I am not careful I will close my eyes and when I open them again it will be time to pack and head to Amherst for the Illustration Master Class again... Oh, by the way, I will returning to the Illustration Master Class again this year, so expect full coverage of the big event! Anyway... I basically came to the blog today, and though I had plenty of content to choose from, none of it seemed right for today. So I figured I would give you a quick peak at the ups and downs that are going to arriving to the blog soon...

On the up side, April promises to be a big month for me, if all goes according to plan I should have a bunch of new work to share with you. I am really excited about this and in means a lot to me personally. More on this in the coming weeks! On the up and down side, I have been taking a lot of risks and trying new things this year. ...but those have not all gone as I would have hoped. I am still getting my thoughts together on all this, but I will be bringing you a post about this soon. It has taken over my thoughts as of late and I figured I better get them out. What does all this mean? No idea. Hopefully, in the end it will all make sense... and that is really the best we can hope for! More on all of this very soon and expect a more monster filled blog post on Wednesday!

You and me both, Doodle Monster!

That is all for today, see you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

Meeting Notes! ...and you will like it.

A quick post on a busy day. For someone who hates to juggle work, I am doing a lot of juggling right now. Mind you, I am not complaining, that is the last thing I want to do. Things should smooth out soon if everything goes to plan. In the mean time, I have for you today some meeting note monsters to take the weight off my shoulders in regards to the blog at least. ENJOY!

As always, before you pass judgment, this is how I take notes in meetings and you should not think I am not paying attention. Active hands means active brain... or something... anyway, on with the monsters...

Bound for Illuxcon 4 & Meeting Notes

On my way to Illuxcon 4 today in Altoona, PA. I have a very early flight to kick things off and will arrive in Altoona early this afternoon. This will be my third visit to Altoona and Illuxcon and I am really looking forward to it. I hope to see a lot of friends, amazing art, and hopefully learn a thing or two. I will as always try my best to post each day recapping all of my misadventures. Because of this crazy day o travel that I have ahead of me, some meeting notes have stopped by to once again save the day.

Meeting Notes on the run...

I am post from my super secret birthday location today. Making this quick and dirty since there is much to do and little time to do it. To make this happen some more meeting notes showed up to help out on the blog again. RAWR!

If there is one thing my doodle monsters know how to do it would be exhaling little puffs of cartoon smoke from their snoots.

I wonder how this one would get food to its mouth... I think it is wondering the same thing. Luckily or it the tusks are seasonal and he bulked up ahead of time and will not need to eat during tusking season.

Yes, Virginia, there are meeting notes

Just a quick post today since there is far to much wackiness to deal with. From the back pocket I have some more meeting notes. When in doubt grab those little monsters on little sheets of yellow paper.

Even More Meeting Notes

A late blog post on a holiday for most in the United States. Laying low and getting some rest and HOPEFULLY a lot of work done. I still wanted to make sure I got by the blog all the same. Since it is a low key day I have some more meeting notes that I have been compiling over the last several months.

More Meeting Notes

My week began with a bang and ended with a thud. I guess I should count myself lucky and be grateful for that bang, but that is another conversation all together. With this in mind as well as several other factors I am keeping a low profile today and have for you some new meeting notes. I have been in a lot of meetings lately.
