Yote Portrait - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

I am thrilled to share another new piece from The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia. This illustration is for Book Two: The Completed Circle. I say new, but this was completed in early December 2022. While I am currently focused on large pieces for the book, I have been fitting in smaller pieces to help me feel like I am moving forward in production. If you are familiar with the first book, you know that each chapter begins with one or more 'man of the street' hot takes on the subject of the chapter. It will be no different in book two, but now you will have a face to go along with the words at the beginning of each chapter. This was something I had wanted to do for book one, but one of the things that fell by the wayside just to get the book across the finish line. Now I have been able to make it a reality for book two. I am immensely enjoying making these smaller pieces. They are quicker to complete, add a slice of worldbuilding, and give a face to a name and species. Going to start off with the first one that I finished, though after this, I will likely share alphabetically to stay on brand. I present you with a Yote (name and/or chassis number to come later).

These are by far the smallest pieces created for the books. More and more, I find myself working larger and larger. There is something really lovely about a 5 x 5 image, and I have already framed them all up. They look great in a frame an will make a nice addition to my conventions later in the year. For now, I am focused on making more of them and moving ahead on big illustrations. Here is a look at the sketch for the Yote to show where it began.

Yote Vocal Box - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

I am thrilled to share another new piece from The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia. This illustration is for Book Two: The Completed Circle. This piece is one of the supporting images for the book section dedicated to the Bumbling Assistants. The comedic sidekicks to the hero are a pair of befuddled Yote that are found wandering the wilds. Book two will contain more information and details about the mysterious Yote and the nature of their existence. Even a more candid look at what literally makes them tick, like a partially deconstructed voice box. I present to you the Yote Vocal Box.

This was the fourth of six smaller pieces I wanted to finish before moving to larger, more involved works in book two. Each section of book two will have at least two supporting art pieces. They will help flesh out the section and add context to things in and beyond the Grand Bazaar. The main art for the first three sections of the book are completed, so it only seemed natural to complete the supporting pieces as well. With them finished, I have moved on to much larger pieces that will keep me in the chair drawing for a while. Here is a look at the sketch for the Yote Vocal Box to show where it began.

As a bonus, I have some images of the rendering process of this piece so that you can get a better idea of it taking shape.

Keeper of the Clocks - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

I have a new piece from The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia! With all the monsters complete, it is now time to begin exploring the Grand Bazaar itself. The first stop is in the clock tower that stands in front of the great tower of Ethra VanDalia. Ethra's connection and interaction with time have always been troublesome. It has taken a lot of work and some special modifications to get a chronometer to function this close to Ethra. The Construct Guild was up to the challenge, and through a fair bit of sacrifice, the clocks now function. If you are interested, the Construct Guild is always looking for volunteers to join the team to keep the clocks ticking.

Due to the complexity of these larger full environment piecesheadaches I am now working on, I have needed to do value studies to make sure I know where I am going and don't lose my way. Doing these value studies has been one of the best course of action on this project and have saved me a lot of headache. Here is the value study for the Keeper of the Clocks.
