Name the Monster Contest Winner!

With the help of Jason Callahan I present to you the newly named Gorplesnatch. I want to thank EVERYBODY who took the time to submit entries. Many of you went above and beyond and gave me lots of additional details about this creature. You all are awesome and it was fun to read them all! If you have not taken the time to do so you should go read the various entries on last week's blog posts or this monster's photo over on my Facebook page. Here once again is the Gorplesnatch...

Again, thanks to everyone who participated in the contest! Jason Callahan, I hope you enjoy the drawing! This was sure a lot of fun, I may have to do this again! One last bit of info, it is neither here nor there, I always have names for my monsters, even this one. I personally named this one the Plated Haphtrack. But officially it is now the Gorplesnatch.

That is all for another exciting Monday on the blog, see you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

Name the Monster Contest Ends Today! Tilt Brush Preview! Looking ahead to "D" Monsters!

Got a lot of different things for you today. A contest reminder, a peek at things to come next week, and look at the long terms as it pertains to the next waive of monster drawings. Let's start off with the Name the Monster Contest...

Who or what am I?
Leave your answer in the comments below to possibly win this drawing!

Here again are some rules, or head over to Monday for the whole story...

  • Tell me who or what this monster is.
  • Submit your entries in the comment section of this blog post or in the comment section of this image when I post it on Facebook on either my account or fan page.
  • Everybody gets 3 chance to tell me who or what this is. Please number them so they are clearly separated.
  • You do not have to submit all your entries at the same time, just make sure you number them.
  • You can submit your entries through Midnight (EST) of Friday June 10th.
  • I will announce the winner and winning name on the blog on Monday June 13th.
  • If you choose to incorporate the word "RAWR" into your submission it better be AMAZING because I am not looking for hundred variations of cramming "RAWR" into a name.

The office got in a VR set up and I have been playing around with Tilt Brush. Tilt Brush is a VR painting program from Google. I will be doing a full review next week on the blog with lots of images and gifs of what I have been doing. So far I have spent about 2 hours in the program and have three pieces to share. Here is a preview of things to come...

Tilt Brush Monsters! RAWR!

Last but not least, I have begun getting ready to start up on the remaining "D" monsters from the original Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual. If you are not familiar with my Fresh From the Drawing Table series, here is the most recent post with ALL the links. I have already completed five of the "D" monsters, but that still leaves 68. That's right, 68 monsters that fall under the letter "D". Most are Dinosaurs, Demons, Devils, and Dragons. Still working on how best to tackle this mighty pile of monsters. I will need to get a game plan since I will be working on these for a while to come. Hopefully I will have new drawings from this series to you soon. Here is a look at the list...

Demons and Devils and Dinosaurs, OH MY!
68 "D" monsters ready to reimagined

That is all for another exciting Week on the blog, see you back here on Monday! Until then...

Glorkian Warrior: The Trials of Glork - Fan Art Contest

I recently took part in a fan art contest being held by the great folks over at Pixeljam Games. There was a call out for Glorkian Warrior: The Trials of Glork related art, and since I am a fan and player of the game I was more then happy to jump in and make some Glorkian art. It turns out that I took third place in the contest! Here is my winning contribution...

And the winner is...

A week ago I had a little contest in celebration of my four year anniversary of blogging and for my 500th post. The contest was to guess how many pencils were in a jar that I have been filling for the last seven years. I was really impressed with how many of you took the time to post a guess and for all the kind words, it is really appreciated! While no one was able to guess the actual amount, one person did guess within 6 of the actual number... and if you were wondering, the actual number of pencils in the jar was...

306 pencils!

And the winner is, Guðmundur Harðar! The prize pack will be heading off to him very soon, congrats! Again, thanks to everyone who took part in the contest, hopefully in another four years and 500 posts you will have another chance!

I had no idea just how many pencils were in there until I counted them, and once they were all out they almost didn't fit back in. 306 seemed like a lot, but the amount didn't blow my mind until I started doing a little math. It took me about seven years to go through that many pencils, so that is about 43 pencils each year, or on average I go through a pencil every 8-9 days. I knew I drew a lot, I just didn't realize that I drew that much. This related back to my post about "What does it take?" where I first showed off the jar. I have been asked so many times about getting into the industry and being an artist and how I did it... well, I used up a pencil every 8-9 days... and this was AFTER I was already working in the industry, this was me working and trying to improve my abilities. There are no shortcuts to hard work and time.

See you back here on Friday! Until then...

4 years, 500 posts, and a CONTEST!

Two milestones for the blog this week! Not only is today my 500th post, but this up coming Friday (the 17th) will be my 4th anniversary of beginning this blog (how time flies)! I thought I would mark this special double occasion with a contest and prizes!!!

First, I just want to thank each and every person that has been to my blog in these last four years. The blog would be nothing without the people who visit it, leave comments, share links, and in general find my ramblings here to be helpful in their own artistic pursuits. It has kept me going these past four years and hopefully this is just the beginning! It is a little staggering that I have been able to reach 500 posts, to quote C3P0, "I never knew I had it in me". Again, deepest thanks to everyone that comes to the blog, could not have made it this far without your interest!

Now, what was that about a CONTEST?!?!?! It is real simple... Guess how many pencils are in this jar...

Used pencil jar. This jar contains nearly all the pencils I have used up since mid 2005 when I started working for Wizards of the Coast. Even I don't know how many are in here (yet, I will be counting them for this contest).

RULES:

1) ONE PERSON ONE GUESS.

2) Leave your guess in the comments section of this post.

3) The first person to correctly guess the number of pencils wins, if no one guesses the correct amount the first person to get closest wins.

4) I will need to be able to contact the winner, so if you do not have a blogger account make sure you leave an email address so that I can contact you.

5) DEADLINE, you have until MIDNIGHT, FEBRUARY 20th (that's the following Monday of this posting date) to submit a guess.

6) The winner will be contacted via email on or before Wednesday, February 22nd. The winner will also be announced on the blog on this date as well.

7) If something goes wrong, not my fault!

8) Don't follow the rules, don't win the prize.

PRIZES!

A selection of prints, a sketchbook, and a selection of miniature that I designed!

A closer look at the loot!

Just my way of saying thanks to you all for these exciting years on the blog. Make sure you add your guess in the comment section below for you chance to win!

See you back here on Wednesday for post 501! Until then...

2010 World Yo-Yo Contest

A few weeks ago Lee Bretschneider was telling me about a friend who had all these little wooden yo-yos that she would like to get artist to work on. They are to be auctioned at the 2010 World Yo-Yo Contest. I expressed interest and before I knew it I had a little wooden yo-yo of my own. Now, what could I possibly want to paint on mine? ...a MONSTER of course!

This was a very fun nice little distraction from my assignments. I hope it is received well at the event. I am told the art auction is a highlight of the event and they go quickly. My apologies for the blurry comparison photo, but you get the idea... they are little.

It is almost here, Gen Con is next week! Check back in on Monday to see some of the new promotional materials I have for this year's convention season. I am really happy with how they have all turned out and look forward to putting them into folks hands. Until then...

And the winner is...

You might remember my previous post about my newest submission to the local Tijuana Flats ceiling tile contest, well they finally tallied the votes and declared a winner. Apparently it is me! Free tacos for me for awhile... OM NOM NOM NOM NOM. They were eager to give me some more tiles in preparation for their next contest. Haven't taken them yet, but most likely will. Here is a photo of the tiles in place at the restaurant.

Don't forget! I have my art show opening this Friday! I will be hanging this afternoon! Wish me luck, haven't done this in a while. I hope to take photos as it happens and will try to share some with you on Friday. Until then...

Tijuana Flats Ceiling Tiles

Back in July I took part in a ceiling tile painting contest for a newly opened Tijuana Flats Tex-Mex restaurant. They announced that they are doing a new painting contest and I jumped at the chance to have some more fun with real paint. You are limited to two tiles in the contest so I figured why not take both and do something big and fun. This is what I came up with...

If you are saying to yourself this is all just an excuse for me to paint Godzilla for once... well, you might be onto something. I meant to have this done a lot sooner but being sick last week really put a dent in my production schedule. The contest does not end until the middle of next month so it will be awhile before I know if I won any tacos. I must be patient! Here are some additional images of the tiles...

After an hour or two of sketching out the drawing and laying down some base colors. What you can't see in this image is the hair dryer, because acrylic just does not dry fast enough.

After a couple more hours. Almost done now. At this point it really began to move quickly.

That is all for this week. I will be back next week with some new work that I think is safe to show off! Until then...

Geek Night 4.0 - Wrap up

If you some how missed my constant and repetitive announcements regarding it, Geek Night 4.0 at Florida State University was this past Friday evening. I was an invited guest at the event and all the sorted details can be found here, here and here. My partner in crime for the evening was Lee Brethschneider. It is safe to say much fun was held by all and I think the event went smashingly. They are already talking to me about next year, which needless to say is pretty cool. I think I prepared really well for the event with only two things I will want to change for next time I do something like this... 1) Make MANY sketches in advance to help when things get really busy, and 2) Have a sign that reads "FREE SKETCHES". I found myself repeating that the sketches were in fact free and people could take one. Had several people ask if they could touch the cards to get a better look at one only to find out that they could take it. Enough of this, lets get to some pictures...

Tables were set upon a dais so that we could look out over the masses like Jabba the Hutt. Seriously, this set up worked out really well and allowed us to actually see what was going on much better. For next time were were talking about having a little more room for people up in front of us on the dais. ...and look! They made us awesome banners!

A closer look at my table from ground level. I brought some of my portfolios, miniatures, and had a Quicktime movie playing images of some of my work. This did not stop people from asking if the work I was surrounded by was in fact my work.

The view from the dais. Very similar to the ground level only higher with more sketch cards.

My big event near the end of the night was to give away two signed prints to two lucky people. I think the drawing was a good idea and got a lot of attention. It was also a good use of my Clone Trooper bucket.

The big draw of the night though was the sketch cards, here are a selection of the cards that I gave out for free at the event. I was almost not able to keep up with demand, but people were patient and everyone that wanted one got them.

Some more of the sketch cards I did for the event. By the end of the evening I was taking requests and that got to be pretty fun, though unfortunately I don't have any of those to show off.

Here is Lee's awesome setup. He had lots of cool freebies to hand out including a comedy CD he made and "I heart Centaurs" shirts. Lee was also doing sketch cards and had lots of examples of his work to show off. You might notice he did not forget to bring along a "FREE SKETCHES" sign.

Last, but not least our two lucky winners of the signed prints!

I had a great time and I hope everyone one else that attended did as well. I am looking forward to being invited back next year to have even more fun!

Make sure you stop back by on Wednesday, I have something really cool to share that was sent to me over the weekend. Until then...
