Role Play - Dice Portrait Tees - Kickstarter

Good day, adventures! I must draw your attention to a Kickstarter that is relevant to my interests! Warrior, artist, and friend, Lee Bretschneider is currently raising funds to create a line of shirts based on his Role Play dice portrait work. Those familiar with the blog should recognize Lee's name since I have mentioned him here over the years regarding this work at Adventuring Company, participation at Geek Night, and journeys through dungeons that I have mastered. You really should take the time to check out the shirts and the great video that Lee did for his Kickstarter... AND you really should help fund this... cause I want some of these shirts!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/leebretschneider/role-play-dice-portrait-tees

Here is a look at all the designs Lee is planning on creating when he gets funding for his project. I am partial to D4, D6, D10, and D12... but they are all great! You know you want them too!

Again, take a moment and head over to Kickstarter to have a look at Lee's project, the shirts, the video, your options, and all the great add ons! If you somehow missed the link until now... Role Play - Dice Portrait Tees! Make this excited adventurer even more excited and get his project funded!

That is all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog, see you back here on Friday! Until then...

Geek Night 2012 wrap up

Geek Night 2012 has come and gone. A fun time hanging and drawing with Lee Bretschneider and Justin Peterson as we got to talk to the students of FSU about monsters and art. We had a lot of fun and it was nice to be back for our fourth year in a row! Enough talk, here are some picture from the night...

Geek Night 2012 table arrangement... each year I think it gets a little better.

A close up of all the neat things everybody had to touch all night long.

Lee got himself a copy of creatura libri 3! Made sure there was a happy monster waiting inside for me... RAWR!

Here are some of the sketch cards that I drew on Friday night that I liked...

...and here are more sketch cards that I drew night night that I liked.

A blast from the past! While walking through the FSU Union courtyard I finally took a photo of something I did way back in 1999. A design based on a linoleum block print that I made won a contest to be turned into table top art back when I was a student. I got to glaze the ceramic tiles myself and now there is a concrete table in the Union that has my little alien standing on a giant tentacle in space. It has held up pretty well all things considered. I decorated a second table that is right next to this one... but it was pandering to school spirit in the hopes that I wold win... it is horrible and I will save that embarrassment for some other time... or maybe never.

A big thanks to everyone at the FSU Union Productions for having us out again this year and to everyone that came out! I hope you all enjoy your sketch cards and that you had a fun time. I know I did! If you missed out on Geek Night hopefully we will have a chance to correct that next year!

That is all for another exciting Monday on the blog, see you back here on Wednesday for more fun! Until then...

Geek Night 2012 - One week away!

It is that time again, Geek Night 2012 is almost here! Geek Night, you ask? Geek Night is a yearly fall semester tradition at Florida State University to help welcome students in a fun and geeky atmosphere. I will be returning for my fourth appearance at Geek Night along with the very talented Lee Bretschneider and Justin Peterson. We will be creating sketch cards on the spot and giving them out to everyone that shows up on a first come first serve basis. The last three years have been a blast and I see this year being even better! Here is a very tiny poster with all the information...

Very tiny poster says:
Friday, September 21
Freaks and Geeks Night
Union Ballrooms
8:30 PM – 11:30 PM
Free for FSU Students; $8 GA
18+

I think it has been free for all in past years, so I am not sure what is changing, but it has been fun for everyone that has attended that I know. A free sketch card from 3 artist is definitely worth the price of admission in my books! Speaking of sketch cards, here is a sample of cards from last year so that you can get a feel for what there is in store for those attending...

Geek Night 2011 sketch card samples - One FREE for those attending Geek Night! (limit one per person while supplies and my sanity last)

If you are attending, head on over the the FSU campus and find yourself at the Union Ballroom. Here is a completely unhelpful map to assist you in your journey...

Just look for the giant red ring in the sky...

I hope to see you there if you are in the area and able to attend! The past years have been super fun and I am 2012 will be no exception.  Besides the artists, I am told there will be Yearbook Pictures, Costume Contest, video games and more! For more information there is a Facebook Event and the Union Production website.

That is all for another exciting week on the blog, see you back here on Monday! Until then...

Uncanny Very Near Mint

Recently, I had the privilege once again to contribute to another of Justin Peterson's comic projects, Uncanny Very Near Mint. You may remember my contribution to his first graphic novel that came out last year. It was a real thrill to be able to one again have some of my work share the same pages as Justin's stellar work (as well as the very talented Lee Bretschneider and Tara Abbamondi!). This time around Justin gave me free reign and didn't want to see it until I was finished, so I went back to my roots and had some Godzilla fun...

Once again, I can not recommend the comic stylings of Justin enough. His work is super awesome and in Uncanny he is joined by two other outstanding artists to make a great little anthology. Here is a pic of the cover of Uncanny VNM (just so you know you are buying the right comic!).

Uncanny Very Near Mint by Justin Peterson!

If blow past all the amazing comic art in Uncanny VNM and get to the back you will see my monster pin up in all its black and white glory. I am told volume 2 of Very Neat Mint will be done soon, so that means I need to get moving on another pin up!

One more time, just in case you missed it before, if you are interesting in more information or in purchasing a copy of any of Justin's books, head over to the Adventuring Company website!

That is all for another exciting Monday on the blog, see you all back here on Wednesday! Until then...

Geek Night 2011 wrap up

Geek Night 2011 has come and gone. A fun time hanging and drawing with Lee Bretschneider and Justin Peterson as we got to talk to the students of FSU about monsters, super heroes and thing with top hat and mustaches. Turn out was a little light compared to last year, but there was so much going on in Tallahassee Friday night that is not surprising. Still had fun and it was night to be back for our third year in a row. Enough talk, here are some picture from the night...

Geek Night 2011 table arrangement, now with 200% more signs.

A shot of us all lined up and ready to start the night. Lee Bretschneider was set up directly on my right and Justin Peterson was on the far end.

Lance the Fett and my wife take a break of all the Geek Night excitement.

I think Justin Peterson was the hit of the night with his fully digital set up. People could watch on screen as he worked on his Wacom Cintiq and then get a print out of anything he did that night. Justin always had a crowd of onlookers.

But in the end, we were no match for Droideka...

A big thanks to everyone at the FSU Union Productions for having us out again this year and to everyone that came out! I hope you all enjoy your sketch cards and that you had a fun time. I know I did! If you missed out on Geek Night, don't worry, it looks like I have another event coming up at the end of October again on the FSU campus! More on this soon!

That is all for today, it looks like I have a busy week on the blog ahead of me, lots to share! Until then...

Ninja Mountain 105 & Geek Night 2011

I was a little slow on the uptake on this one... I recorded a Gen Con wrap up with Paul "Prof" Herbert and Ninja Mountain members Ralph Horsley, Drew Baker and Jeremy McHugh recently. Apparently it has already gone live and you can not listen to everyone's thought and experiences from Gen Con 2011 as well as the lovely sounds of my load computer. There is some great reflection on the everyone's experiences as well as tips and ideas on how to make your con appearances better. You can find all this in the second half of episode 105 of the Ninja Mountain Podcast. Go have a listen... NOW.

It is that time again, Geek Night 2011 is just almost here! Geek Night, you ask? Geek Night is a yearly fall semester tradition at Florida State University to help welcome students in a fun and geeky atmosphere. I will be returning for my third appearance at Geek Night along with the very talented Lee Bretschneider and Justin Peterson. We will be creating sketch cards on the spot and giving them out to everyone that shows up on a first come first serve basis. The last two years have been a blast and I see this year being even better! I better get started making some sketch cards to have ready ahead of time. If you are in the Tallahassee area the night of Friday September 16th between 8pm - midnight, be sure to stop by FSU campus and say 'hi'!

That is all the updates for today, see you back here on Friday! Until then...

2010 World Yo-Yo Contest

A few weeks ago Lee Bretschneider was telling me about a friend who had all these little wooden yo-yos that she would like to get artist to work on. They are to be auctioned at the 2010 World Yo-Yo Contest. I expressed interest and before I knew it I had a little wooden yo-yo of my own. Now, what could I possibly want to paint on mine? ...a MONSTER of course!

This was a very fun nice little distraction from my assignments. I hope it is received well at the event. I am told the art auction is a highlight of the event and they go quickly. My apologies for the blurry comparison photo, but you get the idea... they are little.

It is almost here, Gen Con is next week! Check back in on Monday to see some of the new promotional materials I have for this year's convention season. I am really happy with how they have all turned out and look forward to putting them into folks hands. Until then...

Monster Car Revisions

Back in December I shared with you some elements I created for a monster car video clip for the Florida Department of Transportation. Turns out... they didn't want a monster car after all. Who knew?

RAWR! Remember me? I am Monster Car!
© 2009 Florida Department of Transportation

There apparently was a hiccup in the communication at some point and they had wanted a happy car. Something akin to the cars in the Pixar film, Cars. Back to the computer for me and soon we had a brand new car with a rosier outlook on life.
Decidedly NOT Monster Car
© 2009 Florida Department of Transportation

But fear not for Monster Car! The client was so happy with how Monster Car turned out that they decided to use both cars. Using both better illustrates the misperception of cars by children. They are not your anthropomorphic friend but are really a one ton bringer of death. Or something close to it.

Monster Car, child and Happy Car all together all together at last!

A few edits and replaced graphics later we have our new video clip with all the old and new elements. Please pay no attention to the very beginning, Blogger's compression on the video is doing something weird to it. Enjoy...

I will be back next week with more thrilling posts. Not sure what Monday will involve since it is a holiday and I will be laying low and out of sight of the internet. I will try and find something quick and fun if possible! Until then...

Monster Car

I am knee deep in holiday cheer... or at least that is what I hope I am knee deep in... which is why today's post is a little later then normal. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

Anyway, today I bring you some of my "other work" that I recently completed. It is for the Florida Department of Transportation. My talents were needed on a video piece and so I rose to the challenge and really went out on a limb to try something new... no, actually they needed a monster car. So I made them a monster car...

RAWR! Evil and scary, the monster car will get you.
© 2009 Florida Department of Transportation

The other elements that were required for the segment were a child and a background. The elements are all based on video and stills that were taken for the project. If you are asking what this all mean, apparently children have difficulty understanding things like cars and do not know the danger that they pose. Fantasy and reality are blurred for young children and so extra caution needs to be taken when children and cars can together.

Car, child and background all together.

These three elements were handed off to my cohort in crime, Lee Bretschneider. I have mentioned Lee before, he and I were the guests at Geek Night. Lee took my elements and made with the movie graphics in After Effects to create the required seven seconds of video that will be part of a larger education project. This is how the video turned out:

Monster Car in all it's glory. RAWR!
* After posting this I notice that the video does something weird at the beginning and goes back to normal... not sure what is up with that, but just ignore it. Thanks!*
© 2009 Florida Department of Transportation

That is all for today. Family is heading into town as I write this and will be here soon. I guess I should have mentioned this is post #150 for the year, a number I am shocked to have reached. I never imagined I would have gotten this far and stuck with it this long. Yays to me! ;)

If all goes well, I should have a couple more post before the end of the year. Until then...

Geek Night Version 4.0 Update and Poster

We are a mere two days away from the big event, Geek Night 4.0! I am pleased to announce that I am not the only artist that will be attending as a guest and creating free sketches! My good friend Lee Bretschneider will also be at Geek Night sketching and should have some other exciting items to offer those lucky folks that get there early. It is shaping up to be an exciting night!

I have been doing some warm up sketches to get in the groove and make sure I do not spend too much time on any one sketch. I am pretty happy with how they are turning out. I hope that the folks attending feel the same way! I still have some prep work I need to get done but it should all be resolved by Friday evening.

As promised yesterday on Twitter, here is the very cool Geek Night poster. You can't beat roller skating Wookiees!
