This past week saw the release of Press the Attack, the newest expansion to the Star Wars Card Game, which means I now can share another new piece of Star Wars art. I say new, but I painted this way back in February of 2015 and it is just now being released. Good things come to those that wait? No matter, because the wait for Forest Awareness (featuring Teebo) is now over...

This piece was rather open ended when it was assigned to me. It called for an Ewok doing something that show it looking proficient in the ways of the forest. Some of the suggestions from production were to have the Ewok leading a Rebel soldier though the forest, an Ewok tracking something, or an Ewok hunting... anything that made the Ewok look like it knows what it is doing. The Ewok choice was also up to me so I of course wanted to pick one of the named Ewoks from Return of the Jedi. Teebo was the first to come to mind since he is a master hunter and tracker. Teebo tracking animal tracks in the forest ended up being the focus of the final piece. And I of course had to put blood on Teebo's club since Ewoks are blood thirsty predators.

I will have more to share with this piece in the near future when I share the process that went into it. For now, here is a look at the printed card...

Free Comic Book Day 2016 Recap

This past Saturday was Free Comic Book Day. The good folks at Fallout Comic invited me back out for the day and I was thrilled to return. There was a lot of comic books, super heroes, droids, Stormtroopers, talk of Captain America: Civil War, and fun to be had on Saturday. It was a lot of fun and a big thanks goes out to everyone at Fallout for including me! Also, a big thanks to everyone that came out to see me!

I brought more with me then I ever had, so I really had to hustle to get completely set up in only an hour. Usually my set up takes several hours, but I guess I am getting better at doing this sort of thing. In record time I had my wall up, art and prints out, and ready for the doors to open. When I am a mile from the comic shop it is hard not to bring everything! I am sure it is overkill, but... I still do it anyway.

My view for all of Free Comic Book Day. There were just different amounts of people. Sometimes a LOT more and sometimes this many. Everybody loves Free Comic Book Day.

The $1 comic bins! Everyone got to pick out one of these for free as part of FCBD. 

I looked through some of the boxes but never found the right one for me. You need to make sure you find the right fit with an old comic.

C-3PO Marvel Sketch Cover and Free Comic Book Day

Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day and as I previously announced I will be at Fallout Comics. As part of the FCBD festivities I did a mixed media piece on a blank cover release of C-3PO #001 that came out from Marvel Comics a couple weeks ago. Those attending FCBD at Fallout Comics will be the first to give this piece a forever home after that it will be available on my store if I still have it. Here is a look at the final cover...

This was a really fun low stress piece to work on. It was also very fun to play around with three different material on one piece. This was also a great chance to do a study of my C-3PO 12" figure from the 90's. I don't do a lot of mechanical pieces so this was a fun departure. Hopefully this will be well received and give me a chance to do more of these sketch covers from the Star Wars comics. It was sure a lot of fun to make!

I made sure to capture some images of the cover coming together, so here are some images of the piece coming together as well as an animated progression to better show the difference from step to step. I worked up entire piece in Copic Marker first then went in with pencil. I worked up the entire piece after that going back and forth between marker and pencil. Finally I went in with acrylic paint to punch up the highlights and finish it all off.

It is May 4th... or May the forth... or May THE 4th... or however it is suppose to be said. I guess whatever sounds most like 'may the force'. That said, I really didn't know what to do with the blog today and I have a bit going on, so I thought I would take advantage of the date and share a bunch of my Star Wars work that I have produced over the last five years. Fungoid Model and Render by Christen Borras

I recently talked about how an artist's work can be used in a less than ideal way, in my opinion for whatever that is worth. Today I would like to share how an artist's work can be used and transformed in a completely acceptable way... again in my opinion, but it is my work, so... whatever.

Over the weekend I was contacted by Christen Borras, who is a student. He wanted to let me know that he used my Fungoid concept and design as part of an assignment to model and render a character. Here is a look at my concept design and illustration of the Fungoid...

Here is a look at what Christen did with my design as he translated it to 3D. I think it turned out great and is extremely faithful to the original design. You can see more over on Christen's ArtStation gallery. It is really fun and exciting to see someone else interpret your ideas into a new medium, not to mention that your idea interested someone enough to go through the time and effort to make something new based on the original design. Great job Christen!

Not to labor the subject, but there are reasons why this usage of my work is so different from the usage I posted about a couple weeks ago. First, Christen contacted me to let me know about his usage of my design and offered me the opportunity to have him remove it from his gallery. Second, he gave credit with a link to me as the creator of the design. Third, he has transformed the designed and made something new, which he created from scratch. Fourth, he is a student and this is on a personal gallery as an example of his work - and really this is no different from any other artist who is given a style guide to follow or reference that needs to be matched. We all make original work that has elements that need to match a companies IP or established characters. Christen is showing that he can stick to the provided reference and produce a final piece... which is a real world working requirement.

Again, great job Christen! It looks great and and I hope you all the best with your studies!
