Scorpion Redsign - OHOTMU Reduxe

Over five years ago I redesigned the Marvel villain Scorpion for The Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe REDUXE Edition (OHOTMU Reduxe) blog. For whatever reason, this was never posted on their blog, and a quick check shows that no new content has been posted there in over a year. I am tired of looking at these images in my blog queue folder, so I decided it was finally time to share this image. Here is my redesign of Scorpion.

I had a lot of fun with this piece, just as I did with all the work that I created for this redesign blog. There was nothing but freedom when it came to the redesigning and the deadlines were flexible. I am still pleased with everything I did for them. Here is the original page for Scorpion, unfortunately, I do not know who the original artist was that contributed to this page.

Lastly, here is the pencil and ink work that went into this illustration. As I began to ink, I realized that the legs were WAY too short in the drawing. It was an easy fix as I inked, and it improved the piece.

I am unaware of what the future holds for The Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe REDUXE Edition blog, but I believe this to be the final piece I will have done for them. Glad to finally share it.

That is all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog, see you back here on Friday! Until then...

Free Comic Book Day 2016 Recap

This past Saturday was Free Comic Book Day. The good folks at Fallout Comic invited me back out for the day and I was thrilled to return. There was a lot of comic books, super heroes, droids, Stormtroopers, talk of Captain America: Civil War, and fun to be had on Saturday. It was a lot of fun and a big thanks goes out to everyone at Fallout for including me! Also, a big thanks to everyone that came out to see me!

I brought more with me then I ever had, so I really had to hustle to get completely set up in only an hour. Usually my set up takes several hours, but I guess I am getting better at doing this sort of thing. In record time I had my wall up, art and prints out, and ready for the doors to open. When I am a mile from the comic shop it is hard not to bring everything! I am sure it is overkill, but... I still do it anyway.

Here are some images from the days events at Fallout Comics for Free Comic Book Day 2015...

Bringing the convention presence to Free Comic Book Day for a special 6 hour event!

Stormtrooper husks. Every sprint the Stormtrooper molts and grows a new shell.

More Stormtrooper bits... and comic books.

One of my favorite Stormtroopers stopped by again this year to celebrate FCBD.

Walking and talking Stormtrooper reference.

My C-3PO sketch cover went to a forever home! RAWR!

My view for all of Free Comic Book Day. There were just different amounts of people. Sometimes a LOT more and sometimes this many. Everybody loves Free Comic Book Day.

The $1 comic bins! Everyone got to pick out one of these for free as part of FCBD.
I looked through some of the boxes but never found the right one for me. You need to make sure you find the right fit with an old comic.

Another successful  Free Comic Book Day! We will hopefully see you back out there next year!

That is all for another exciting Monday on the blog, see you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

C-3PO Marvel Sketch Cover and Free Comic Book Day

Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day and as I previously announced I will be at Fallout Comics. As part of the FCBD festivities I did a mixed media piece on a blank cover release of C-3PO #001 that came out from Marvel Comics a couple weeks ago. Those attending FCBD at Fallout Comics will be the first to give this piece a forever home after that it will be available on my store if I still have it. Here is a look at the final cover...

This was a really fun low stress piece to work on. It was also very fun to play around with three different material on one piece. This was also a great chance to do a study of my C-3PO 12" figure from the 90's. I don't do a lot of mechanical pieces so this was a fun departure. Hopefully this will be well received and give me a chance to do more of these sketch covers from the Star Wars comics. It was sure a lot of fun to make!

I made sure to capture some images of the cover coming together, so here are some images of the piece coming together as well as an animated progression to better show the difference from step to step. I worked up entire piece in Copic Marker first then went in with pencil. I worked up the entire piece after that going back and forth between marker and pencil. Finally I went in with acrylic paint to punch up the highlights and finish it all off.

Deviants - OHOTMU Reduxe

I have recently contributed again to the extremely awesome The Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe REDUXE Edition (OHOTMU Reduxe) blog. You will remember that this blog is redesigning, reinventing, and otherwise recreating all of the entries in the Official Handbooks of the Marvel Universe. My previous batch of aliens can be found HERE and HERE. For my thrid, and more likely final contribution I tackled HUGE group of crazy mutant alien proto human things... I present to you my take on the Deviants...

These all took a bit of time to finally finish up... I have in fact been working on these off and on since April! A labor of love. Now that they are done I am a little surprised how much I put into them. They were fun... but 18 is a lot of portraits. Here are some larger uncropped image of them all so you can get a better look at them...

Alien Races - Rhunians to R'zahnians - OHOTMU Reduxe

I have recently contributed again to the extremely awesome The Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe REDUXE Edition (OHOTMU Reduxe) blog. You will remember that this blog is redesigning, reinventing, and otherwise recreating all of the entries in the Official Handbooks of the Marvel Universe. My previous batch of aliens can be found HERE. For me second contribution I tackled (big surprise) another group of aliens, I present to you my take on the Alien Races - Rhunians to R'zahnians...

Like the first set these were all incredibly fun to work on. It should be notes that took many liberties with the Rhunians... but what else am I suppose to do when I have to redesign a 300 foot tall pink man in his underwear... Here are some larger images of each of my redesigns so you can get a better look at the finals...

It was very enjoyable to get to work in this looser quicker style to finish these up. It has given me a lot of ideas on what else to do with this level of finish for my own work. Here is a look at the drawings and ink work that went into each of the alien redesigns...

Alien Races - Horusians to Judans - OHOTMU Reduxe

I have recently begun contributing to an extremely awesome blog, The Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe REDUXE Edition (OHOTMU Reduxe). If you are not familiar with it I highly recommend taking the time to head over and check it out! Even if you are not a huge fan of the Marvel Comics universe it is worth your time to check out all the great work and a very impressive project in both size and quality. I have a love for revisiting, reinventing, and redesigning and this blog offers me a great chance to have some fun and let loose on unfamiliar source material. For me first contribution I tacked a group of aliens, I present to you my take on the Alien Races - Horusians to Judans...

These were incredibly fun to work on and I am looking forward to having the chance to do more... so hopefully in the coming weeks I will have that chance! Here are some larger images of each of my redesigns so you can get a better look at the finals...

Since most of my illustration work is fully painted these days it was really nice to be able to cut loose and have some fun digitally inking my drawings and then doing looser color work to create the finals. Really left me wanting to do more work like this. Not only is it quicker in many aspects, but it was just fun to create a more graphic image. Here is a look at the drawings and ink work that went into each of the alien redesigns...
