IX 2025 Announcement!

I am thrilled to announce another convention that I will be attending in 2025! Notices went out a week or so ago, and I can now announce that I will be returning to the main show of Illuxcon in Reading, PA, in October 2025. We love IX, and it is a truly unique experience to attend and be a part of. I will share more once we get closer to October; I am sure I will have a surprise or two planned.

That's all for another exciting YEAR on the blog. See you back here in 2025! Until then...

IX is Next Week!

IX is finally here!  The IX Art Show marks my final show of the year, so I am gearing up to end the convention season with a bang. I will be returning to the Main Show at the GoogleWorks building in Reading, PA, with the Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia and the rest of my monsters. I will be debuting new art from the Grand Bazaar, and if things unfold as hoped, I will have new client work to debut as well. As with all my events this year, I will have Magic the Gathering artist proofs, original art, books, pins, and more.

See you at the Main Show of IX at the GoogleWorks in Reading, PA!

I am in booth 218 - head to the second floor of the Googleworks, you will find me in the back of the gallery.

In addition to being in the Main Show, I will be taking part in the first of two Magic SketchFests. At the SketchFest, groups of Magic the Gathering artists will gather in Studio 411 and work on Magic Artists Proofs while fans and attendees talk, ask questions, and purchase the artist proof. I took part in the first one a couple of years back, and I am thrilled to be back and taking part again. It was a lot of fun, and I hope to see new and familiar faces there.

See you at the first of two Magic SketchFest!
Thursday, October 24th, from 3:00-5:00pm in Studio 411 in the GoggleWorks Building.

There are many amazing looking panels, demos, and discussions planned this year, and there is part of me that wishes I was not showing so that I could attend all of the events. And don't forget that on Friday and Saturday nights, the IX Showcase will be taking place in the convention hotel. The Showcase is ALWAYS a blast, and there should be tons of amazing art. I hope to see you in Reading next week!

That is all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog. See you back here on Thursday! Until then...

2024 Convention Annoucment!

I am thrilled to announce what will hopefully be one of several events that I will be attending in 2024! Notices went out a couple days ago, and I will be returning to the main show of Illuxcon in Reading, PA, in October 2024. We love IX, and after the bumpy journey this year with all the car trouble and craziness, we are doubly pleased to have a nice long trip next year - hopefully with 1000% less chaos. I will share more once we get closer to October; I am sure I will have a surprise or two planned.

That's all for another exciting week on the blog. See you back here next week! Until then...

Illuxcon 2022 Recap

IX was last week, and I am still wrapping my head around the best five days of art I know of. This was year fifteen of IX, which is hard to believe. I started attending fourteen years ago with IX 2, and save for one year when there was a family emergency, I have been in attendance. I wouldn't miss it! Over the years, I have been an attendee and displayed work in the Showcase, the now nonexistent Weekend Salon, and the Main Show. Some of the great things about IX are that art is the focus, it is low pressure (compared to larger conventions), and you are surrounded by artists, collectors, students, and mixes of all three.

GoggleWorks, where the MAGIC happens!

IX 2022 was the first event that made me feel like things were 'normal' again in a COVID world. While we needed to wear masks in all IX spaces (acceptable and expected), the rest of the time was mask optional. Reading, PA was definitely living in a post-COVID world, as there was little to no sign that we were still living in the shadow of a pandemic, which is good - as long as we are all safe. Over the past two years, I have spoken about COVID a lot on this blog because it has profoundly impacted the quality and conditions of my life and that of my wife, friends, and family. We have lost many, and sadly since my wife is an ER nurse, we have had a very different experience. I repeat all this because this year at IX, it finally has felt like the veil has lifted and that some semblance of normalcy has returned to our lives. And I ate up every single second of it.

We saw so many faces we had not seen in a long time this year. Many others are finally feeling safe as well and are returning to events. It was a truly and utterly enjoyable time. For fourteen years, I have praised IX and the work that the Wilshires do to make the event special, and I will continue doing so. It is not lost on me that over these years of attending, I have gotten a bit older and wiser, though I am feeling the age more than the knowledge. I can't stay out like I used to, and sleep is vital for me to function. That meant this year, I had to have some early nights, and I missed at least one dinner to nap so that I might enjoy the evening and still be at the booth the next day. It is not lost on me that at the beginning of IX, I would run around taking photos all day and writing a massive blog post with loads of images for EACH day. Now I can barely get any pictures of the row I am set up on, and I only release a single recap post a week, or longer, after I return home. Not having a laptop anymore has some effect on this. The other significant aspect is that I feel part of the community, not as an outsider looking in.

I wasn't tied to the booth as much as last year with the launch of the Grand Bazaar, but I spent a lot of time joyfully spreading the word of Ethra. I realized that I stood for eight hours straight on the Saturday of the event and didn't bat an eye. It was a super busy day, with loads going on, and I had gotten a lot of rest. It was exciting to see so many new faces at IX this year. There were a good number of new artists and new to me artists. The volume of new art that I could see was just the nourishment my soul needed. Once again, I have returned home with many ideas and plans for the future. I am ready to do ART again!

While I love the Main Show, this will likely be my last time in it until the completion of book two of the Grand Bazaar. I need to focus on working on the book and will need to cut corners where I can. Also, the available new work will likely be limited until the next book's completion. I had to do this leading up to book one, and after this year's IX, I knew it was that time again. I will still be at IX, and you will still be able to see what I am doing in the Grand Bazaar, but you will find me in the Showcase for the next few years.

I will talk more about numbers and such when I recap all of 2022 in two months, but IX was a good show for us again. As of the show's close on Saturday, I had hit my sales numbers for all of IX last year. In addition to good sales, I had two large sales after IX, making IX my second-best event ever, falling behind Gen Con this year. But more on this in a couple of months. For now, let's look at some images, and I will share some additional thoughts.

Beginning last year, we stopped at the Natural Bridge at the beginning of the second day's trek to IX. We didn't know what to expect last year, but this year I knew there would be giraffes!

Very hungry giraffes!

They were nice enough to allow me to get some reference images. You could feel their tongue in your hand and their hair if they dropped their mouths into your palm, but they would jerk away if you moved your hand to get a better feel. I can respect that and be grateful for this unforgettable encounter with some beautiful animals.

The elephant's enclosure is large, and there is a lot of buffer around it, but I could still get some nice images.

BIRDS!

The danger kitty was very active and put on a show for us.

I begrudgingly left the animal behind, and we headed to IX. The start of any show is a mess as all my stuff needs to get into a building from a trailer any way it can. So there is usually a pile of stuff spread out in my booth, getting in the way of me setting up my booth.

Fun fact: More time is spent getting from the previous image to this one than from this image to the next.

And like magic, the Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia takes shape!

I found a +5 axe of thrashing!

It is not a convention without a stylish blazer.

As with most IX appearances, I drew a lot of Magic the Gathering artist proofs.
Like, a LOT.

For the artist-proof art jam, I decided to bring some markers with me and I did a selection of color proofs. If you know me, I prefer to work in grey and black ink on the APs, so this was a bit different and a lot of fun. Is this something you would like to see more of from me? Is this something you would be interested in from me? Leave a comment below!

While at IX this year, I produced my favorite or all favorite AP drawings. It was on the back of a Bribe Taker, and the prompt was to do a Star Wars bribe taker. After a few moments of thinking, the path forward was clear.

I get around this year and look at other floors and everyone's art. I just failed to take any photos. Next year... for sure!

A significant highlight of IX 2022 was talking to Eric Wilkerson’s students about art, my career, and the Grand Bazaar. It was a full-circle experience where I found myself offering advice and answering questions to the next generation of artists. Like so many did for me when I started attending fourteen years ago.

For most of IX, I thought I would sell out of the Deluxe Editions of the Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia, but for some lucky humans out there, I have returned with the three last copies. Once these are gone, they are gone forever.

I am an adult, and I can do what I want.

One last artist-proof drawing.

Strangely, I can take loads of photos of IX after it is over. It is so strange after the show comes down and the walls and art is gone. After I am all packed up, I join those that remain and help tear down the floor I am showing on. You can never have enough hands Sunday night, and thanks to those that stayed, we were out of there in record time.

And thus ends another IX. The drive home is a lot less fun than the drive up, but this year we meet up with friends as we all drove home and had one last meal together. Also, we picked up some much needed flat files for the studio. These have been on the bucket list for a long time and now I have them and they are great. More on the flat files and a whole lot more another day! For now, we look ahead to 2023.

That's all for another exciting week on the blog. See you back here on Monday! Until then...

Magic Artist Jam - IX Live Drawing!

Next week at IX, I will be participating in a live drawing jam where a group of artists works on Magic the Gathering artist proofs while answering questions and having fun. In the first jam, I will draw with Matthew Stewart, Jarel Threat, Ralph Horsley, and Bob Eggleton. I could not ask for a better group of artists to draw with.

I hope to see you in Studio 411 from 10:00am – 12:00pm next Thursday, October 20th!

In addition to participating in the live drawing jam, I will be offering my artist proofs for the Bribe Taker from New Capenna Commander for the first time! I will have copies for sale, as well as a few that I will be taking to the drawing jam, which will also be available to those at IX. Fear naught, after IX comes to a close, I will put the proofs up for sale on my store.

Please be aware that, at this time, I only have the bordered version of the card. The borderless version is still being produced and will be to be soon.

That's all for another exciting week on the blog. See you back here after IX. Until then...

See You at IX Next Week!

Things have been quiet on the blog because I have been a tad busy. That said, I wanted to remind everyone that I will be in the main show of IX in a week and a half. I hope to see you in Reading, PA, from 10/19 - 10/23 for the best five days in imaginative realism art!

Come see me and a ton of other amazing artists!

I have been digging through my archives and flat files, and I will have art never seen before or not available for a while. This includes paintings, drawings, and more. I will have new work from Magic the Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, and The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia!

That's all for another exciting Monday on the blog. See you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

IX 2022 Main Show Announcement

With the holidays and the end of the year, I never had a chance to post that I would be returning to the IX 2022 Main Show. It is a true honor to bring the Grand Bazaar back to IX and be surrounded by many amazing artists. There are many artists appearing for the first time at IX this year, and it will be wonderful to see their work. I must do a better job getting out of my booth and seeing the show in October. This past year I never gave myself time since I was there for the first time with my book. Anyway, enough of that. Here is a full list of the Main Show artists for IX 2022.

That's all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog. See you back here on Friday! Until then...

Illuxcon 2021 Recap

The Grand Bazzar of Ethra VanDalia at IX 2021

Last week I was able to return to in-person conventions. Given all the events of the past two years, there is something comforting about it being Illuxcon. IX has been a special part of my life since 2009, and it was not the same last year without it. To ensure that we had the safest event possible, only fully vaccinated individuals could attend, and during event hours in event venues, masks were required at all times. It was the least we could do to help create a safe and enjoyable experience.

I am not sure I can put into words how much this year's IX means to me. I knew I was missing friends and the greater art community and family, but until I got there, I was unaware of how desperate I was to be part of it again. I feel I had been wandering the desert got two years and finally found water and food. I know I was not the only one feeling this. I am filled with hope, love, and the creative spark again. Hopefully, I will channel this, as I have done in the past, to push forward with new work. It's not just about art; so much of what made IX great this year was simply being around friends and people again. At times, it was emotionally overwhelming, and it took everything I had to keep my composure and enjoy the moments.

I will be honest, I did a lousy job of taking photos of IX this year. I never left my booth during show hours, except for restroom breaks, lunch, and the panels I was a part of. Not only did I do a poor job of documenting the event, I never saw the main show except for my floor and some of the first floor. I visited the fourth floor early on set up day before most people were even there and never again. This is all on me, and I regret it. For better or worse, I was focused on the Grand Bazaar this year now that the books are available. I wanted to be present in the booth at all times and available to talk to people about my work. The funny thing is, after all the preparation and work I did to ensure IX was the best it could be, I forgot to plan how I was going to talk about my book. For years I practiced talking about the book I was working on, the book that was just over the horizon. I never thought I would have trouble talking about the book right in front of me. Since it was the only thing that I didn't plan or prepare for, it was the one issue I had. In general, I think I am talking about the book wrong, but I will need to talk about this another day when it is the focus. Suffice it to say, by the end of IX, I understood the problem, and I have some plans on how to move forward.

I think I could keep talking about how much IX meant to me and how important it was to finally be happening again, but I think now is a good time for images and thoughts associated with them.

Now that the book is out and I have a complicated setup at conventions, the only travel solution is a trailer. I know I packed way more books than I needed, but it was my first convention with them, and I wanted to be optimistic.

Even though it has been a long time since I did an event, Mietze could tell something was up and tried his best to stick close to the items going with me. I think he hoped to come to IX with me.

Once again, we had the pleasure to stop at Natural Bridge Part on the journey to Reading, PA. The weather was much better this year, and we were presented with a gorgeous morning to take in this natural wonder.

Part of the trail was closed, but we could still take in a lot of the natural beauty of the park.

New to us this year was the Dinosaur Kingdom 2. It was not open, but there were a collection of monsters outside to enjoy.

Also new to us was the Nature Bridge Zoo. They had a surprisingly large selection of animals.

This zoo allowed for many close encounters with beautiful creatures.

The one thing I was most surprised by was being able to hand-feed giraffes.

We have taken part in feeding giraffes at the Jacksonville Zoo, but it was nothing like this.

I made to take as many photos as I could since I am not sure when I will be this close to a giraffe again.

I love me some hornbills and will always photograph.

I am sure you were wondering if this post was actually about IX! After two days of driving, we were finally in Reading, PA, and at the GoggleWorks.

I may have been the first to unload, which meant I had many helping hands to get all the art, books, and booth stuff moved to the second floor. Those boxes in the background are mine too.

The first thing to do is hang the art and figure out where it all needs to go.

Once the art is sorted, it comes down, and the red walls go up. Then the art goes back up, and I can begin working on the rest of the setup.

Nearly done! Art and books made as prominent as possible.

The remarkable thing about IX is that you never know what is hiding around the next corner. For me this year, it was seeing my most favorite of favorite Larry Elmore painting in person. I never thought in a million years I would have the chance to see it.

Then over dinner, I got to talk to Larry about the painting.

I made sure to mask up in style with our new branded masks!

As with every event, I did a few drawings on Magic artist proofs.

Being at a fully vaccinated event means you can do things like this.

Another unexpected surprise was the visit of King, a European eagle owl. Plenty of photos were taken.

Book buddies! Jon Sideriadis and I were side by side in the show.

I managed to get a couple photos in the Showcase, and most of them were of Tom Kuebler's new work.

Realizing I hadn't taken any photos of the show, I took a couple of the second-floor gallery.

OH! And there are always more artist proofs.

I forgot that at in-person events, I can do things like sketching in copies of the Grand Bazaar.

The Peanut Bar is a Reading and IX tradition, and it was wonderful that they were gracious hosts and made us feel welcomed.

I had the honor to panel with these fine humans - Allen Panakal, Jon Sideriadis, and David Thorn Wenzel. Had a wonderful time, and hopefully, we shared some wisdom and experience with those in attendance.

Sadly, IX had to come to an end. But worry naught, IX 15 will be returning to the GoggleWorks next year!

That's all for another exciting week on the blog. See you back here next week! Until then...
