Drogon Tattoo

In 2010 I painted the three dragons from A Game of Thrones for the card game for the first time. This, of course, included Drogon, and in 2011, the cards were released featuring my paintings. They were a fan favorite immediately, with Drogon becoming the top favorite. Sometime after that, I was approached by Mat McCarthy regarding usage rights for a tattoo. As this was work for hire, that is all out of my hands; I gave him my blessing. For years I have been reluctant to design tattoos or have people use my art in such a manner. It had everything to do with not feeling comfortable with art I do not think it is my best to be permanently put on someone's body. As my skillsets improved over the years, my no-tattoo stance has softened. I am still not designing them, but my existing art is available - but you need to contact me first, and I would like images of the final results. To start things off, here is the final art for the first Drogon painting that I created.

If I dug through enough messages and emails, I could figure out when Mat approached me, but that is irrelevant to the story. Mat wanted Drogon on his body, and I was finally at a point I could give him my blessing. This was years ago, but as of 2016, Mat had a significant amount of the tattoo finally created. Mat shared the images again, which is how I finally saw them. He shared that the piece is still not completed. I think it looks fantastic all the same, and he agreed that I could share the images of his tattoo. Without further yammering on my part, here are the images of the Drogon tattoo.

Many thanks to Mat for the use of the images and for liking this piece enough to get it over a good bit of his body. It is an honor and very humbling.

Remaining Game of Thrones Mousepads and Playmats ON SALE!

While preparing for my first convention since February 2020 in two weeks, I stumbled on a handful of remaining client-related pieces of merchandise. These Game of Thrones mousepads and playmats are the very last items of this type in my possession, and once they are gone, they are gone forever.

These mousepads and playmats feature my art of Viserion and Rhaegal that I created for the Game of Thrones card game. They are some of my favorite dragon art that I have made in my career.

In addition to a reduced price, I am offering discounted shipping in the US.

Here are images of the items and links to my store. Or you can head to my store to see all related items here.

Making monsters with Zoe Robinson

It is an end of an era. After nearly a decade, Zoe Robinson will be leaving Fantasy Flight Games for bigger and better fun at Blizzard. For the past seven years I have had the opportunity to work with Zoe to make a lot of fun monsters for some of my favorite licenses.

I have written about the ups and downs in my career here on the blog before. From 2005 - 2008 I worked exclusively with Wizards of the Coast, but that all came to an abrupt end around December of 2008. Zoe was one of the first art directors to give me work in 2009 when I decided to double down and stick with working in the gaming industry. In April of 2009 I received my first assignment from Zoe, and some how she saw something in it and gave me more and more over the years. I wanted to share with you some of the work I created with Zoe as my AD. Consider this a celebration of the opportunities she has given me, and I am sure many of you out there, to create art for some of our favorite games and franchises.

The very first one... in all its "glory".
The Basilisk from Taliman: Frost March was the first piece I created for Zoe in April 2009.
It is hard to look at now with all its flaws, but I was learning a lot and it was printed very small.

Jump ahead a year and a half, at the end of 2010 Zoe asked me to paint all three of the Game of Thrones dragons. I knew nothing about AGOT at the time, which was kind of for the best so that I did not over think the assignment and sabotage myself. Also, note the difference a year and a half can have on someone's art.

GIANT SPIDER MOUTH!
Zoe knows I love monsters so she had me make a TOTALLY NOT Shelob for one of the nightmare decks for the Lord of the Rings card game. Apparently when she got the art order she thought of me.

Zoe reached out to me to make, in the end, five different pieces of the dragon Smaug for the Hobbit card game. I had not thought I was up the challenge of doing five pieces, but I was convinced by my wife and Zoe tag teaming me into taking the assignment. This one continues to be my favorite.

FFG got the license to do the Star Wars games and Zoe was the lead on the games. She gave me my first assignment in Star Wars with the choice of a Wookiee or a Tuskin Raider. I picked the Wookiee... ALWAYS pick the Wookiee. While there were some ups and downs with this piece it marked the start of many years of Star Wars art.

Zoe knew what monsters I would like best and gave me the room to make the pieces I wanted to make. The art order for this Salacious Crumb piece called for a very different portrayal of Crumb but I knew the piece I wanted to make and Zoe supported me all the way. This is still one of my favorite pieces that I ever created with Zoe.

When something new needed to be designed and illustrated for the Star Wars RPG Zoe came to me and I got to design something for Star Wars!

When I decided to make the transition from digital to traditional Zoe supported me, as long as I could provide a comparable quality and I dealt with revisions. This was one of the first pieces I did for Zoe traditionally and continues to be a favorite of mine.

Last, but surely not least. This is my favorite piece that I ever did for Zoe and is among my favorite pieces that I have ever created. I threw myself into this piece and Zoe supported me through the process to do the piece I wanted to do of Yoda.

Thank you Zoe for all the monsters and fun over the years. Thank you for fighting the good fight to get the artists that worked for you higher rates at FFG. Thank you for the fun at conventions. And thank you for giving me that second assignment after I gave you that wonky Basilisk. While many of us will miss working with you at FFG I know you will be doing great things at Blizzard.

That is all for another exciting Monday on the blog, see you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

Drogon - Toned Paper Drawing (and Gen Con!)

Through the magic of the Interwebs this post is going live while I am in route to Indianapolis to attend Gen Con. If you are heading to Gen Con as well for the best four days in gaming, be sure to stop by the artist alley and sample my artistic wears. Speaking of artistic wears...

Here is a drawing that somehow fell through the cracks that will be with me at Gen Con. Way back in January I shared my dragons from The Hidden Agenda expansion of the Game of Thrones card game. Among these dragons was of course, Drogon. Drogon just so happens to have himself a toned paper drawing...

If you are attending Gen Con and have really wanted to own a toned paper drawing of a dragon that was drawn by me... then you are in luck! Stop by my booth in the artist alley and I will hook you up with some hot Drogon action.

RUN, don't walk!

That is all for another exciting Wendesday on the blog, see you back here tomorrow for the beginning of my 2014 Gen Con coverage! Until then...

What about MY name?

I had an interaction on Instagram yesterday that has required me to write this post. I was alerted by a friend to the fact that someone was using one of my paintings as their avatar. AWESOME! :) They like my image enough to use it to represent themselves online. Using an artist art as an avatar happens all the time and is common on the internet. I went and checked out this person's Instagram account and was troubled when I recognize one of their images as my own AND it had been modified by a filter, which in my opinion made it a lot worse. I checked out the image and was shocked to see this piece credited with…
"Amazing Viserion fan art from @go_sloe @go_sloe @go_sloe -- go check out his awesome #gameofthronesfanart account for more pictures like this one :D"
I will point this out specifically…"Amazing Viserion fan art from @go_sloe
I see a lot peoples names linked to this image... except mine.

@go_sloe does not give me credit either and they seem to be the originator of the uncredited posting of my work. I responded to this with a straight forward correction of ownership and creative control…
@christopherburdett: "This is not fan art from @go_sloe this is my officially licensed art that I was hired to make for the AGoT card game put out by Fantasy Flight Games. It has just had a filter put on it that makes it look worse."
My comment brought the following two replies…
@go_sloe: "@christopherburdett I obviously didn't create that, I just thought it was awesome enough to share on here never took credit for any of the art I post,,, I just appreciate good art when I see it. People don't get paid on Instagram so instead of getting pissed at @westerosian you should be happy people are enjoying your work."
@westerosian: "@christopherburdett hey now we never took credit at all, I reposted it from his account and I'm giving his account a shoutout. We do not claim credit on any if the fan art here. And I am a massive fan art supported, and I tag every single fucking artist that I see because I want to credit them (you'd see that on the majority of my posts.) and there are times where we don't know who the artist is."

Okay, let me break down how this is incorrect and how they are uniformed about their actions, the effect they are having, and how they are stealing from me.

1) Just to be clear, I was not "pissed" at anyone at the time I posted the original comment. It was a straight forward statement of ownership. Maybe they assume anger on my end because they realize they have done something inappropriate?

2) They claim to not have taken credit. Let us take a look at the repost credit…
"Amazing Viserion fan art from @go_sloe"
"go check out his awesome #gameofthronesfanart account for more pictures like this one".
If they are not claiming credit they have completely muddied the water on who this image belongs to. By not crediting me they separate me from my art and by giving no credit, credit is given to them by others who don't know any better. They have created a wall between the viewer and myself as the creator. How "obvious" it may or may not be that they are not the originator is questionable and now that a second party has claimed, "Amazing Viserion fan art from @go_sloe", it is now linked to go_sloe by future viewers.

3) Then there was this statement, "People don't get paid on Instagram". Not getting paid has NEVER been a valid excuse for theft. By separating me from my work they HAVE effected me financially. I have a web store where you can buy prints of this piece. As a hired artist for Fantasy Flight Games I am allowed to sell prints of this piece. By not crediting me, the viewer can not go to my website or blog where links to my web store can be found and where my prints can be purchased. This uncredited posting of my image received hundreds more 'likes' then when I posted it and was seen by who knows how many more. Even if just one of these people had been interested in buying a print, now they can't. By posting my work without credit they have stolen the opportunity for me to sell my work, which helps me to continue working in this industry. People who download music, books, or movies without paying for them for personal use are not "getting paid" either, and this is still very much stealing from the content creator. By taking my work and reposting it without credit you are stealing my work from me and are using it for your own personal gain.

4) "you should be happy people are enjoying your work" … HILARIOUS! If I tell the power company I am enjoying the electricity they send to my house or the bank that I am enjoying all the money they loaned me to buy my house but I am not going to pay them… well, you don't have to use your imagination to know what the outcome will be. I can not pay my bills and live as an artist with my income consisting of people enjoying my work. Sadly, this is the real world and goods and services need to be exchanged for money to purchase other goods and services. I am passionate about the art that I make, but it is WORK and I was hired to make it. When someone takes my work and severs my ownership from it, it does not matter how many people like or don't like it. I would rather my art not be seen then seen without proper credit.

The dragon in question...

5) "I tag every single fucking artist that I see because I want to credit them (you'd see that on the majority of my posts.) and there are times where we don't know who the artist is." Way to up the conversation by dropping the F bomb. Anyway… I commend you on giving credit, …but giving credit to the WRONG person is still a problem. If you don't know who the artist is, DO NOT POST THE ART. PERIOD. It is theft. PERIOD. Google has some amazing easy to use image search features that allow you to quickly track images down. Also, my name and two of my URLs are ON THE IMAGE. There was no work to do… my info was on the image. You could have used either to track me down and get any and all of my links to give me credit. It was right there in front of you and you ignored it. …of course that great filter that was added to the image makes it a lot harder to read.

6) You took MY image. This image was not from the FFG website. This image was not a scan of the card from the game. This was MY image which came from my blog, website, Facebook, Deviant Art page, etc and it has my name and URLs on it. You came to me, took it, MODIFIED IT, reposted it, and then did not give me credit. Even if you were just google searching and came across the image it links back to my sites and as mentioned above, it has my links on the image. Effort was made to NOT credit me.

7) I have been working in the game industry for over 9 years and I have been working as a professional artist for over 15 years. I have spent decades of my art and skill set. I have sacrificed a lot to be where I am today to make the work I have the opportunity to make. You disrespect me and the time and effort I have put into being the artist I am by taking my work. I have worked on movies, television shows, music videos, and all types of games. If I can not support myself and family with my art then I will have to stop and do something else. By stealing art from those that create it you undermine the very thing you claim to be a fan of. Stealing artist's work contributes to them leaving the industry for work that pays better and offers more security. My job is to make art of the things you are a fan of… your job is NOT being a fan.

8) Ignorance is not and has never been an excuse.

A little comparison.

I hope this educates you. If this makes me the big bad mean artist, then so be it. The theft of art is rampant, but it can be stopped and controlled. Give credit where credit is due… ALL THE TIME. Being too hard or difficult is no excuse. "Sorry officer, I stole that car because it was just too hard to buy one…"

That is all for an unexpected Sunday post, see you back here on Monday for new Star Wars work! Until then...

AGoT - A Hidden Agenda - Viserion Process

And then there was only Viserion... Back in January I shared with you my updated versions of Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal. Last, but not least, today I have for you the process and steps that went into making Viserion. So that we are all on the same page, here is how the final version of Viserion from A Hidden Agenda turned out...

Viserion - A Hidden Agenda
© 2014 Fantasy Flight Games

Mentioned now twice before, I worked on the initial thumbnails for all three dragons all at the same time. Here is how those original thumbnails turned out...

Viserion needed a little additional attention after the initial thumbnail to get everything working. In no time though all was right as rain and the third and final thumbnail was ready for submission...

Viserion was approved and it was time to get drawing on this last dragon. I worked on all of them at the same time up until it was time to paint them. I drew them and painted them in the order I have shared them to you here on the blog. ...which was also the order in which I painted the original set of the three dragons back in 2010. I am a creature of habit and are only mindful of superstitions while painting. Here is how the Viserion drawing turned out...

I had two dragon paintings already done and was on the home stretch when it came to painting Viserion. Of the three, Viserion was the most straightforward and low stress to work on. The biggest challenge was to work out the crepuscular lighting. By the time I was working about the light rays the painting was done and it was just a matter of playing around to figure out what worked right. Here is Viserion coming together in 12 easy steps...

From my interactions with people this seems to be the favorite for the majority of them. I make no judgement call over this, I just find it interesting. I can never predict what people are going to like or not like. Most of the time I pick the completely opposite choice. Oh well... Here is an animated gif of the Viserion painting coming together so you can see how it came about and what changed...

And so concluded all the time and work that went into painting the three Game of Thrones dragons for the card game. RAWR! Again, here is how the final piece turned out as well as the final production card...

AGoT - A Hidden Agenda - Rhaegal Process

Back in January I shared with you my updated versions of Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal. Today I have for you the process and steps that went into making Rhaegal. So that we are all on the same page, here is how the final version of Rhaegal from A Hidden Agenda turned out...

Rhaegal - A Hidden Agenda
© 2014 Fantasy Flight Games

As mentioned with the post about Drogon I worked out all the initial thumbnails together so that they were working as a set and individually. ...and so that they could potentially be interchangeable if one thumbnail suited a different dragon better. Here is how those original thumbnails turned out...

Dragon thumbnails

There were some notes to take into account with Rhaegal as I moved forward with this piece. I implemented the edits and resubmitted the thumbnail. Here is how the updated and finalized thumbnail turned out...

Rhaegal - Thumbnail

With the thumbnails now approved it was time to get drawing... and that is what I did. After some good old scribbling time on paper with pencil I had a finalized drawing of Rhaegal...

Rhaegal - Drawing

Drawing approved it was time to paint! In just 12 easy... MOVING ON... Not as many major edits as Drogon, but there were some definite tweaks and edits to make the piece work better. Here is how the painting developed...
Rhaegal - Process steps
© 2014 Fantasy Flight Games

I wanted to achieve something different with each of these dragon pieces while calling back to the original 3 dragon paintings that I did for the AGoT card Game. Many people have expressed to me which piece is their favorite or not their favorite, for me, this piece is my favorite of the three. I have been holding onto a set of photos of a forest fire for a while and I knew there would be the right piece to use them on eventually. When I got this assignment, I knew immediately Rhaegal needed to be flying through a red/gold environment of fire and burned trees. I love yellow skies... I love red skies... I love green skies... I love skies that are not blue and the images I was using as reference had this amazing colored sky. Add in the burnt trees, smoke, fire, and a big green dragon and I was super happy. Here is an animated gif to better show the progression of this piece...

Another more or less straight forward painting. I had a clear idea in mind for the finished piece and I set my sites and got to work. Again, here is how the final piece turned out as well as the final production card...
