Stop Me if You Have Heard This Before - The Return of the Arcona Rumor Monger

Okay, so a funny thing happened since last Friday when I shared what had to be the final instance of my Arcona Rumor Monger painting being reused in a Star Wars game product. Well, since last week, it came to my attention that the art was used once again for the Convincing Demeanor card, but this time in the Diplomat Agitator Specialization Deck from 2015. It may have taken six years for me to learn this, but better late than never. At this point, I am assuming that this art is in every single Star Wars product released by FFG. That is a joke for the folks in the back. It is great that the art has been so well recieved that it found a use in so many products. It is the painting that keeps giving and giving. Here is a look at the much-repeated incarnation of the Arcona Rumor Monger art as the Convincing Demeanor card.

I wonder if I had known at the time of this pieces creation how often it would see print if I would have done anything differently. In all likelihood, I would have likely stressed over the piece and not enjoyed myself. That is the way of things.

If, for some reason, you are trying to complete your collection of my work in print, here is the cover of the Colonist Performer Specialization Deck so that you might purchase the correct one.

Lastly, here is the original illustration for the Arcona Rumor Monger. At this point, I am not sure that this will be the last time I will be sharing this one with you. Exactly how many times was this piece used?

Colonist Performer Specialization Deck - The Return of the Arcona Rumor Monger... Wait, WUT?!? AGAIN????

If you think you have seen this post before, in some ways, you have, and in some ways, you haven't. My Arcona Rumor Monger painting that I created for the Star Wars LCG is above and beyond the most reused image that I have ever created. At least to my knowledge. It has been on cards, in books, in decks, and likely more than I will ever know. Every time I think I have found them all, another one will surface. The specialization decks for the Star Wars RPGs are where they seem to be more common. This particular usage is from 2015. I have known about it since 2019, but I haven't had a chance to share it here yet. Of all the images I have made in my two decades plus career that this is the image that keeps getting reprinted is a bit funny to me. It is nearly a direct self-portrait and is the first of my Star Wars work that points in the direction that all the subsequent work followed. Here is a look at the much-repeated incarnation of the Arcona Rumor Monger art as the Convincing Demeanor card.

If you look carefully, you can see the digital sketch of my giant map of The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia behind the card. You can also see my production checklist with all of the completed elements marked off in orange highlighter. The text is likely a section of my book that I was proofreading when I took these pictures of the card and the deck cover. A strange little slice of a moment in my life and the creation of my book is in the background of these images.

If, for some reason, you are trying to complete your collection of my work in print, here is the cover of the Colonist Performer Specialization Deck so that you might purchase the correct one.

Lastly, here is the original illustration for the Arcona Rumor Monger. I need to make the time to tell you about all of the Easter eggs that I have put into this image and many of my other Star Wars paintings. That will need to wait for another day.

Smuggler Gambler Specialization Deck - The Return of the Arcona Rumor Monger... AGAIN

I have for you today another instance of my Star Wars work being reused on various other Star Wars products. This time around, I have for you the Smuggler Gambler Specialization Deck from 2015. This one totally slipped under my radar until last year when I ran across it. I hadn't the time to share it until now. The Smuggler Gambler Specialization Deck sees the return of the Arcona Rumor Monger that I originally painted in 2013 for the Balance of the Force expansion to the Star Wars Card Game. Here is a look at the much-repeated incarnation of the art as the Convincing Demeanor.

This piece has made the rounds before having been used in the RPG and in another specialization decks. It seems to continue to be popular and may well be my most reused piece from Star Wars, if not all my client work. If for some reason you are hunting down the Smuggler Gambler Specialization Deck to complete your collection of my work, here is an image of the front of the packaging so that you can get the correct one.

Spy Sleeper Agent Specialization Deck - The Return of the Arcona Rumor Monger

I continue stumbling across instances of my Star Wars illustrations being reused on various other Star Wars products. This time around I have for you the Spy Sleeper Agent Specialization Deck from 2018. This one barely slipped under my radar at all. The Spy Sleeper Agent Specialization Deck sees the return of the Arcona Rumor Monger that I originally painted in 2013 for the Balance of the Force expansion to the Star Wars Card Game. Here is a look at the new incarnation of the art as the Convincing Demeanor.

I didn't work on that... why is my art being used?

I really don't know where to even begin with this, but I will stumble through it all the same. I am not sure if I will come to any conclusions or deliver any answers, but maybe I can get a(nother) conversation going. This is something that has been around forever(?) and will likely be with us indefinitely. It goes by many names: borrowing, incorporating, appropriating, stealing...

This is not an easy subject and everyone has an opinion and draws their own lines on what is allowed and what it too far. There are also SO many different ways these acts are committed. Sometimes art is used and is unchanged, sometimes art is used unchanged with a new persons name attributed to it, sometimes the art is modified to some degree, sometimes the art is recreated so that the heart and soul of the original is still there but the details are changes, and sometimes the ideas or creations of two or more things are just shoved together to make a 'new' thing. To me, these are all interchangeable.

An article popped up on my Facebook feed and I was a little curious. The article centered around a fan made set of Star Wars themed Magic the Gathering cards. I figured all of the art had to be swiped since the lead in graphic was obviously from another Star Wars project. I poked around the article and the cards a little and quickly found not only my art being used but many other pieces that I recognized as friend's work or work used on projects I had worked on or knew of.

Article in question. Not going to link to it, but I am sure you can find it.

Okay, let's get some things out of the way... "They are not making any money from it, how are they hurting anyone?" "This is the highest compliment!" "They are just fans making something for themselves and fans." "They are making something NEW and are not at fault." Nope, nope, nope, and nope. At worst they are thieves and at the least they are severally taking advantage of MANY people and the COUNTLESS hours of time and effort that went into creating the original artwork. And not just the hours of time of the artist, but all those involved in the production of the original. The art directors, writers, game designers, etc are all tied into these types of actions.

Looking at this through the lens of just me and my two pieces that are involved with this, let's break this all down. First, something that is RARELY, if at all, done was that I and the rest of the artists were credited. This in and of itself is an miracle, and I wonder if the original MtG cards had not always included the artist names if the names would have ever been included. So, one good thing, I guess. Now for the rest...

My Salacious B. Crumb painting that I originally created for the Fantasy Flight Games release of the Star Wars Card Game now is being used on a custom made and distributed Star Wars themed Magic the Gathering Card. I am 100% sure that no one that owns that art was contacted about this usage.

My art seen here was created for the Fantasy Flight Games release of the Star Wars Card Game. FFG / LFL / Disney own the art and all usage rights. I am allowed to use it for promotional purposes and that is the beginning and end of it. DONE. This person has taken card art I did for a company and used it unchanged, save for cropping off my watermarks, copyright info, and most of my signature and is now using it as a card illustration. There is no evolution here, there is no transformation, the art is being used in the way it was originally intended.

As far as the 'not making any money' argument, when someone illegally downloads music to listen to, they are not making any money from it. They are enjoying it for what it is and doing so without the creator or owner being rightfully compensated. Once that person has that illegally obtained music they can pass it around, for free, harming the creator even more. No money is being made, but there is still a victim. We are fooling ourselves if we want to draw distinctions between a song and a piece of art. If it is taken and used without the creator / owner being compensated for their time and effort then it is equally wrong.

My Arcona Rumor Monger, also created for the FFG Star Wars Card Game. Again seen here unchanged except for the removal of watermarks, copyright, and signature.

Obviously time and effort went into writing and working out the cards and their mechanics. That goes to whomever put this all together, they made that. They did not make the art and I am 100% confident that the time they devoted to making the stats for the cards is a drop in the bucket compared to the time and energy of the artists. Not to mention that the card template, icons, etc are all trademarked or copyrighted by Wizards of the Coast. Just because someone worked really hard to make something new and then used the property of someone else, in no way justifies it.

'This is made by a fan for fans' ... and your point is? Why do we make excuses for something that is wrong? If the art is so important to the finished product then you REALLY need to be an adult / professional / thoughtful person and either do what has to be done to make / buy / license the artwork or you go without. Or in the least, NO NOT POST IT ONLINE FOR ALL TO SEE.

I know we live in a time where Google offers up images without limits and that we share things online. BUT the rules have never changed, it is just so much easier to take without penalty and share without consequences. I am sure these people would feel a lot differently if they were the victim, but maybe they wouldn't. Maybe they don't value their time and effort, maybe they think they have done right by everyone, maybe they would never imagine that they have done anything wrong. I have dealt with plenty in the past that feel justified to take whatever they want and attack any that question them. I really feel sorry for them, but it does not grant them immunity or justification.

These are my two cents, for what they are worth.

*EDIT* I have had some additional thoughts after this post originally went up:

These pieces were work for hire, the client hired me to make the work, payment for services rendered. They own it and have the copyright. It is their fight if this would ever escalate to a legal matter. They would have to send the cease and desist, they would have get their lawyers involved, it is their dog in the race. For better or for worse, this did not involve a piece of my own art. I can not act on this unapproved usage of my these painting.

That said, I have still been harmed. They stole my time and a part of my life. I spent a part of my life to make these paintings. While I was compensated for the work, the payment in no way actually comes close to compensating me for the time and effort that I spent on these paintings. I do some of these pieces because I want to, because they mean something to me, as a way to better my skill set at the same time I get a little money and a published piece, etc. By these pieces getting used without compensation to me they are taking advantage of that time I invested in making them. I could have used that time to do any number of things and I chose to make a painting for a client and this person(s) has come along and taken that from me. A part of my life that I will never get back. I think this get to the heart of what angers me so much about these types of behavior. These people leech off my time and effort, and the effort, time, and money of the client, without any consideration or compensation.

Say you are waiting in a restaurant for your meal. You are very hungry. As the waiter brings you your food some other person comes by and eats it all before it get to you. You of course will not have to pay for that meal and another will be made for you, but you have been wronged all the same. This might not be the best analogy, but I think it gets the point across. The major victim is the restaurant, but you needed that food and now you lost the time that had already passed to make it. NO ONE would be okay with being the hungry person in the scenario. Yet music, art, games, and more is constantly being stolen without thought or concern.

Okay... I think I am done now.

That is all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog, see you have here on Friday! Until then...

Star Wars - Edge of the Empire - Far Horizons

At Gen Con this year one of the new Star Wars RPG source books making its debut was Star Wars Edge of the Empire: Far Horizons. It just so happens that I had some pieces in this book AND it just so happens I now have a space on the blog to share said work now that all my Monster Manual stuff has finally been posted. I produced two new Chevin pieces for Far Horizons and my Arcona Rumor Monger piece has made another appearance (I think this is its fourth time getting published!). Here are how the final pieces turned out...

If you are wondering what the heck a Chevin is you just need to watch Return of the Jedi again and keep an eye out in Jabba's Palace where you will see the Chevin, Ephant Mon. The Chevin were on my list of aliens that I wanted to work on so it was nice to mark them off the list. The Snake Oil Salesmen was my favorite by far. It is always nice to see the Arconan Rumor Monger make an appearance, this time it got to show off a bit of the background and was printed nice in big in the book. Here are some images of my work from the book...

Handy Dandy images of the work in the book.

I will share the process and steps that went into these pieces here on the blog in the near future!

Star Wars: Balance of the Force - Arcona Rumor Monger PROCESS

Back in January I shared with you the Arcona Rumor Monger that I created for the Balance of the Force expansion of the Star Wars Card Game. The time has finally come that I am sharing the process that went into this piece that was originally produced WAY back in March of last year. So we are all on the same page, here is how the final piece turned out...

Arcona Rumor Monger

Thumbnails came first (surprise surprise). The reference shoot for this was fun and I channeled my inner Arconan to get my head around this piece. I always work out some ideas of what I want to do with a piece ahead of time, then shoot the reference, and then begin to work up the thumbnails. This allows me the flexibility to adapt and work off the unexpected elements that occur in the reference shoot as well as having a strong foundation from the reference. I always come up with better solutions to a piece when I can physically act it out. Here are how the thumbnails turned out...

Arcona Rumor Monger - Thumbnails

If I remember correctly, all of the thumbnails were winners, but option 'A' worked best for the piece. The Star Wars cards can have a lot of chrome (the elements of the card that border and lay over the art) and this piece was going to have a huge strip over the top third of the piece that I was going to have to leave room for. Option 'A' allowed for this gap the best and told the story of the rumor monger. With a selected thumbnail it was time to get started on the drawing...

Arcona Rumor Monger - Drawing

Using my reference more I flesh out the final drawing, making sure everything is in its place and the piece overall is working. At the time I was working on the drawing I was still working through the figures in the background. Playing with the idea of how much I wanted to do with them and how far I was going to push the piece for myself. As you have seen in the final, I added a lot to the background that was eventually covered up in the final card. Those elements are for me, the things I do to make the piece mine. SO... I keep mentioning reference... well, I will tease you no longer, here are some of the reference shots that I used for making this piece...

Arcona Rumor Monger reference for all your Arcona reference needs... RAWR!

The drawing was approved and it was now time to get started on the final painting. The process is the same, the subject matter and the number of correction layers can vary. In eight easy steps here is how the Arcona Rumor Monger took shape...

As an added bonus, here is an animated process step thing that I through together so you can see each layer adding to the image. Some of the changes between steps can be very small or very large... that is just how I work.

Arcona Rumor Monger animated process thing...

I have walked through the actual steps of my painting in a lot more detail on other posts so I will not go through it all again here, but if you have any questions please feel free to add them in the comments below. Now that I had a finished painting it was turned in and approved without revisions... which is always good. Again, here is how the final Arcona Rumor Monger turned out...

Star Wars: Balance of the Force

For the last couple years I have been doing my best to make every assignment "mine" and today I have for you the first of my Star Wars pieces really that fits the bill. I have been looking forward to sharing this since last March and it should be a representation of things to come. The most recent expansion to the Star Wars card game, Balance of the Force, is now out and I have one new card, the Arcona Rumor Monger, in this expansion...

Arcona Rumor Monger
© 2014 Lucasfilm, Ltd. TM Lucasfilm, Ltd. Under license to Fantasy Flight Games

I mentioned on Monday in my look back at 2013 about how I have been working to carve out a section of the Star Wars and D&D universe and tell that part in my voice... well, this is one of those Star Wars pieces.  The assignment was to depict a seedy bar where an Aronan rumor monger leans forward to tell the viewer some juice gossip. That is a fairly open assignment and this piece could have gone in any direction. I could have easily put the Arcona up against a wall or other generic backdrop... but that was not the piece I wanted to create. I wanted to start building my Star Wars world. Since an Arcona appears in the cantina in Star Wars: A New Hope, I wanted to include a bunch of other cantina aliens in this piece. Before I get too far ahead of myself, let's have a look at the final production card so you can better see what and why I did what I did...

Arcona Rumor Monger in handy card form and a lot less background

Yup... the chrome of the card template covers up EVERYTHING that I put in there that was mine. I knew this going into the assignment and it in a way made me more determined to do it. I put all that back there for my needs as an artist and as a fan of Star Wars... not for the client or the people that play the game. I know it is back there, that part in mine. It might seem a little weird to do this, or perhaps a waste of my time and energy... but I know I made the right decision and it has lead to me doing more of this. I have been pushing pieces further then expected and doing more with them. It has gotten me reinvigorated about creating more complex visual worlds and pieces.

If you were wondering what was written in Aurebesh in the background and on the datapad, it is the name of bar, "Ric's". Worked with the folks over at FFG to get a suitable name for this bar that would be approved and add some flavor. Also, if you think this Arcona looks a little familiar... well, his face did sneak into another recently Star Wars piece that I shared back in October.

I did specify above that I have one NEW card in this expansion, but it turns out that there are two card in the expansion with my art on it. Apparently a pair of wily Trandoshans that I first painted for the SW RPG core book have surfaced again, they do get around...

Oh hai, Trandoshans... glad to see you guys made it...

If you had forgotten or missed it before, here is how the original piece of those two Trandoshans turned out...
