Infected By Art Volume 13 Selected Work

I am happy to announce that I have been selected for inclusion in Infected By Art Volume 13. I love IBA, and it is a true joy to be included in a publication that features so much amazing real art. You can see a complete list of the art included in IBA 13 on their website. This year, the Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia was again selected, and I could not be happier!

I submitted a mix of work created for the Grand Bazaar and clients. It always pleases me when my personal work beats out client work, not that I do better work for myself, but because the pieces I do for myself are better received by others and transcend (hopefully) being drawings only about monsters. While I am surprised by which pieces were passed up, I am delighted this one made the cut. If you are curious, here is everything I submitted for consideration in IBA 12.

Congrats to everyone who made it in, and a huge thanks to the jury and Bill Cox for all his work in making IBA a reality. I can't wait to see the completed book firsthand!

That is all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog. See you back here on Friday! Until then...

You can see a complete list of the art included in IBA 12 on their website. Infected By Art Volume 11 - A World of Stories

While at IX last month, I was able to get my copies of this year's Infected by Art. I always look forward to getting my copies at the event, and it has become a bit of a tradition in that respect. This year marks the release of volume 11 of IBA, and once again, I have a piece included. A World of Stories from the upcoming The Completed Circle got a full page in IBA #11, and I think it printed great. Here are images of the book, my art, and my art in the book.

Infected By Art 8 - The Grand Map of the Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

This week I received my copies of Infected By Art 8. It is a gorgeous publication filled with fantastic art. It is an honor to be included in it. IBA8 is special for me because as I was finishing up working on The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia, I only had a single new piece of art that I felt was deserving to be submitted. Since I had nearly completely stepped away from freelance work in the last push to finish the writing for the book, I simply didn't have any new art. No new art save for the map of the Grand Bazaar that I completed in 2019. Instead of waiting a year, I decided to go ahead and submit the single piece, and to my surprise and excitement, it made it in. A huge thanks go out to William Cox, Jon Schindehette, Art Order, and the jury of IBA8 for their work on this stellar tome of art. Here are some images of the book at my selected work.

I really love IBA, and it is a real honor to be included with so many other great artist and their work. You can see a full list of the art included in IBA 8 over on their website. As I said, lots of great work! As far as my work, Vexed Beanmonger, from the upcoming The Grand Bazaar of Ethra Dalia - In the Black, was selected.

You can never know what will or will not make it into a juried event, and it is always interesting to see what does make it through the selection process. While I like this piece a lot, I was a little surprised that it beat out pieces such as the Articulate Polyplot or my Magic the Gathering work. I then remembered that this was the first piece that I could complete after the COVID19 pandemic began. I think it is only fitting that this particulate piece was selected. It is the work that got me back to the drawing table and able to make art again.

If you are curious, here is everything that I submitted for consideration in IBA 9. Congrats to everyone that made it in, and a huge thanks to the jury and to Bill Cox for all his work in making IBA a reality. I can't wait to see the completed book first hand!

Infected by Art 7 and Spectrum 26

It is art annuals season! As I prepared for Illuxcon, I received my copy of Spectrum 26, and while at Illuxcon, I received my copy of Infected by Art 7. For this year's submissions, I only submitted works from The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia, and the Bazaar did not fail me, finding a place in both Infected by Art and Spectrum. Here are some images of my work in these two publications.

Infected by Art 7

Hollow Alley received a full page and reproduced beautifully.

Spectrum 26 marks the first time I have been accepted into this publications. After ten years of submitting I made it in with a piece from my book. I have many opinions regarding Spectrum, its place within the greater art community, and the importance artist (especially young artists) place on the book. I don't really want to rehash it all, I have shared some of it here on the blog before. I will say that now that I have been accepted into it my feelings for myself or my work remain unchanged from those before I was accepted. For most of the morning they announced those accepted I had thought I had once again not be included and I was completely fine with it and planned to no long submit. I find solace that after all this time, the work selected was profoundly personal work from my book. That means something to me. The Spectrum box is checked off, and I have no further plans to submit. Maybe in the coming years as I produce some new work for my next two books I will submit some of the large complex pieces I have planned.

Spectrum 26
Strange how clearly I remember when Spectum 1 came out. It had a James Gurney cover and I was working at a comic book store at the time. The store owner made a huge deal about the book, about how important it was and the work within. It took me a quarter century, but I finally made it - not that I needed to.

Blink and you might miss it.

Quarter page printing of Sunken Stalls. With the original being 16x20 I never imaged it being this small, but it still holds up.

That's all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog, see you back here on Friday!  Until then...

Fretwork Colony - Infected By Art Volume 5

Last week I shared with you the process and steps that went into making the Fretwork Colony that I produced for the Kaladesh expansion to Magic the Gathering. I failed to mention that while I was at Illuxcon last month I got my hands on Infected By Art Volume 5 in which the Fretwork Colony is featured. Once again here is the Fretwork Colony...

I would like to thank again everyone involved with Infected By Art! It is an honor and pleasure to be once again included in the book. The book is beautiful and each edition keeps getting better and better. I have some images of the Fretwork Colony in the book, but please ignore the crappy quality of my images. They do the quality of the book a great disservice, but I wanted to show off the page I was on. I am already looking forward to seeing how IBA 6 turns out, I am sure it will be even better!

Infected By Art Book - Volume 5

Still catching up on announcements from the past couple of month. Happy to announce that once again I will be appearing in the Infected By Art Book. Volume 5 will be out later this year and I will have one piece featured in the book. This time around it will be my Fretwork Colony from Magic the Gathering Kaladesh expansion. Always interesting to see what gets picked by the judges. To be honest, this was the last piece I was expecting to get into the book... and it was the only piece to get in. You never can predict the outcome of these sort of things. Once again here is the Fretwork Colony...

Gen Con and Infected By Art 4

Last was a busy week for with several announcements going out that effect many artists in 2016.  Primary among these announcements are the artists accepted into the Gen Con Art Show and art accepted into Infected By Art 4. I am happy to say that both of these effect me!

GEN CON

I am happy to announce that I will be returning to the Gen Con Art Show this year in Indianapolis, IN. I hope to see you August 4-7 for the best four days in gaming. Thing will be a bit different this year at the Gen Con Art Show so it should be interesting for everyone involved. Artist will, for the first time, be handling all of their own sales. I hope this transition goes smoothly for all involved. Fear naught, I will have LOADS of monsters with me for you to see and take home! RAWR!

INFECTED BY ART 4

I am also happy to announce that I have had a piece accepted into Infected By Art 4. For the second year in a row I am pleased to find my work included in this up and coming art journal! This year my Magic the Gathering piece, Ancient Carp, made the cut. I will have more info about IBA4 as it comes available, but I will assume that it will follow the last few years and will be released late 2016. My thanks goes out to the judges and to all those involved in making IBA happen! RAWR!

Infected By Art 4 - Public voting now live!

I have submitted a group of pieces to be considered for inclusion in Infected By Art 4. Public voting on these pieces is now open and runs through December 13th. While the book is juried there are places reserved in the book for pieces voted on by the public. If you have a chance I strongly encourage you to head over to the IBA website and vote on your favorite pieces. If your choices happens to include some of my pieces, even better! You can see all of my submission in one location by using this LINK. Thanks in advance for your time!

Spectrum for me and you with volume 22

It is Spectrum submission time again, at least for another few hours. I have written about spectrum several times over the years here on the blog and you can read more HERE. I have very little new to add about Spectrum this year save that I did in fact submit some pieces for consideration in Spectrum 22. Or should I say, I made my annual tax deductible tithe to Spectrum.

If you are going to submit to Spectrum 22 you better hurry, the deadline is today!

I am submitting some personal work and some client work this year and have very little expectation of getting in. That is the way of things, they are "the best of the best". Ultimately, I can't get in if I do not submit, so I might as well submit and not make it for real, and get a tax deduction. I tried the digital submission process this year for the first time and it was preferable to sending in prints.

On the flip side, as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago I did make it into Infected By Art 3! Which is super cool and I am thrilled to be a part of this new and growing publication. I submitted some of the very same work to both publications so hopefully some of the mass appeal of my accepted work to IBA3 will rub off on my submitted work to Spectrum 22. We will see in the coming months when my ego is crushed once again.

Let's all think positively!

That is all for another exciting Monday on the blog, see you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

Infected By Art 3 - Selected Pieces

The internet was a buzz yesterday as people shared their work that was selected for inclusion in Infected By Art 3. I am happy to include myself as one of the artist to be included in IBA3! I am sharing the pages of IBA3 with many of my peers, friends, and all around excellent artists. It is a real honor to be able to have three pieces in the book and it is not lost on me that these are most likely some of my strongest pieces from the past year. ...I am also pleased that one of the pieces is a personal work and not just client work was accepted.

Here are nice big versions of all my work that will be appearing in Infected By Art volume 3 so that you can get a good look at it. I am already eagerly looking forward to seeing the finished book that will be filled with so much excellent art.

Gen Con 2015

I am happy to announce that I have been selected for the Gen Con Art Show in 2015. They started a jury process as of this year and it looks like I made the cut. This will be my 5th year in the Gen Con Art Show and I am really looking forward to it! There should be a lot of new faces and some returning familiar one. I will also have a ton of originals with me and it will hopefully be the best looking booth I have set up yet. The Art Order - Ghost From My Past - A Jeff Easley Homage

A really awesome call for art by Jon Schindehette just concluded. Jon, through Art Order and Infected by Art asked that artist inspired by the amazing art of Jeff Easley please express that inspiration in the form of a piece of new art. You can get all the details HERE. Jeff's work VERY MUCH inspired me as a gamer and an artists and I had to take part in this call for art. Here is my submission...

  Monstrous Encounter
9 x 12
Pencil on paper
© 2014 Christopher Burdett

The cover art for the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual 2 had a profound effect on me. It in many ways is the piece that changed how I look at monsters and art. This giant is not just some simpleton, empty headed animal, or just a wandering brute that simply acts on its id and destroys and eats. This giant comes from an organized society of giant folk that have craftsmen, armor-smiths, weapon-smiths, tailors, and everything else you need to be a fully developed well rounded unique species. This giant is a clear and definite threat that is not to be easily fooled and in most cases will be a victor in one on one combat. THIS is a monster. THIS is a monster that could be the hero of its own story. THIS monster is WAY more interesting to me then some traditional human, dwarf, or elf hero character.

Also, this is a piece of art that absolutely blew my mind as a kid. I just could not understand how someone could have possibly created this. So much detail and thought seemed to go into every aspect of the painting. I could not draw anything like this, let alone paint it... whatever or however painting done. It was like I was looking at some alien language that I could understand but could not speak or write. I wanted to know that language. I can look at this painting all day, it still holds all the power and excitement that it did the first time I laid eyes on it...

The AD&D Monster Manual 2... where monstrous imaginings begin... RAWR!

I got a little caught up in drawing this piece and forgot to take a lot of process photos, but I do have a few to share...

You can see the rest of the submissions to this event over on Infected by Art. I would have liked to have done a dozen more of these, maybe in the fullness of time there will be a moment of two more to devote to a piece inspired by the like long body of work produced by Jeff Easley. Thanks, Jeff, for all the magic you created for all of us!
