Quelled Woofettes - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

I am thrilled to share another new piece from The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia! This illustration is for Book Two: The Completed Circle and is the next chapter art in the book. We find ourselves reunited with the once mighty Woofettes that fly through the skies in an airship. Now, he is bound and chained deep under the lair of the Basilisk in the Warren. How did such a fate befall this once mighty being? Will anyone, CAN anyone, lend aid and rescue this tortured soul? But you must remember one thing: The Woofettes are known for the loud outbursts and volatile nature, but it is when they are still and quiet that you know your life is likely nearly over.

As a bonus, I have some images of the rendering process of this piece so that you can get a better idea of it taking shape. This one came together a bit more normally compared to some of the other recent pieces. I worked top to bottom on the figure and then the background. I needed to set the value structure on the figure before I could balance the environment.

Strong Beast - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

I am thrilled to share another new piece from The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia! This illustration is for Book Two: The Completed Circle. This is one of the numerous pieces of spot art throughout the book. This supporting image is for the Enraged Woofettes section of the book. Depicted here are ancient images depicting the "Strong Beast" that is said to be the large, strong being in the story of the Completed Circle. While a Woofettes has filled that role for a millennia in the telling and retelling of the story, it would seem that they were not originally in that role. I present the Strong Beast

This is one of the many pieces I completed so far this year. It has been a blur of pencil and paint. Nice to finally be sharing them. Here is a look at the sketch for the Strong Beast to show where it began.

As a bonus, I have some images of the rendering process of this piece so that you can get a better idea of it taking shape. Additional fun fact: While this is the same paper I have used for my work on the Grand Bazaar, this sheet and several others recently used was from a larger piece of Rives BFK that I have had since college, so over twenty years old. I am not sure if it is the age of the paper or if the paper is made differently now, but water does not go down on this paper the same way as all the others of the same type I use. So there was a lot more drying time and a lot of impatient waiting to see if the washes went down correctly and if the pencil was blending the way I desired. In the end, there was no deviation from the image I was able to achieve, just some uncertain moments of waiting for things to dry.

Woofettes Bells - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

I am thrilled to share another new piece from The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia! This illustration is for Book Two: The Completed Circle. This is one of the numerous pieces of spot art throughout the book. This supporting image is for the Enraged Woofettes section of the book. Depicted here is a selection of bells made and worn by Woofettes. As mentioned in the first book, the Woofettes have a great number of superstitions, and they employ a variety of bells and shakers to keep the powerful forces of evil at bay. For a species as large and aggressive, they live in constant fear of that which their physical might can not stop. I present the Woofettes Bells.

Enraged Woofettes - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

I am thrilled to share another new piece from The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia! This illustration is for Book Two: The Completed Circle. After only referring to them by their species name, I am pleased to finally show you what a Woofettes looks like. The Woofettes appear throughout the first Grand Bazaar book, and I planned from the beginning to finally debut them in the second book. As mentioned then, I shared the Dashing Vagabond piece; the Vagabond, a Ullnach named Nimmulli’Zhaq, has a Woofettes companion, and the Enraged Woofettes of book two is that companion and goes by the name of Gaurlvetaur. You saw a bit of leg in the Vagabond piece, and if you look closely just behind the Gaurlvetaur's leg in this piece, you will see the Vagabond cluelessly walking away while the assassin that had been following them is getting more than he bargained for. Gaurlvetaur works on Nimmulli’Zhaq airship doing all the physical labor and keeps him out of trouble when on the ground. Nimmulli’Zhaq isn't the brightest, bravest, or even that smart, but he has an airship and a Woofettes friend to watch out for him. I present to you the Enraged Woofettes.

As much as I enjoy the large environmental pieces, it is nice to return to slightly smaller and more focused images for the characters from the book. This was my first piece of 2024, and I am pleased with how the Woofettes and Vagabond turned out and go together. Here is a look at the sketch and tonal study for the Enraged Woofettes show where it began.
