A Second Look at Older Work - Rocky Horror Derby Show Derby Poster

This coming June will mark twenty years for me in the gaming industry, and this is also my twenty-sixth year as a working artist. I have made a lot of work over these years, and as I focus on larger projects with multi-year timelines, it is hard to keep this blog updated regularly. I have kept this thing going since 2009, and I would like for it to continue. To that end, I thought I would look back at works I particularly liked, enjoyed making, or seemed to fall through the cracks and went unnoticed.

Today, I have for you one of the roller derby posters that I made fifteen years ago. This is my second favorite of the posters I made. Not as popular as the Rollbots, but it was well recieved. It is hard to imagine that fifteen years ago, I had enough time in my schedule to allow me the freedom to take on projects like this to help out the local team. The local team has changed a lot over the years, and they neither do posters like this nor play locally due to a lack of venues. That said, we love roller derby in our house, and it was great to support our friends and the team when we could. You can read all about the work that went into the poster, shirt, and the process of it here on the blog.

It took a significant amount of reference, work, and more work to get this one across the finish line. Everything was in my wheelhouse save for Frankie and Rocky - which is the main focus of this piece. But thanks to some really good reference thanks to my wife, we have this image.

That's all for another exciting week on the blog. See you back here next week! Until then...

Rocky Horror DERBY Show Poster (and more)

Tomorrow, August 14th, Tallahassee's own Capital Punishment will be going up against the Brevard County Molly Rogers in some awesome roller derby action! Once again I created the poster for the Tallahassee Rollergirls. As with the derby poster I created a few months back, my work does not stop with just the poster. There are a few variations that I need to make to cover the needs of TRG...

Once again there will be a limited edition t-shirts available at the bout featuring the poster art. I hope the shirts are printed as nicely as they were for the last bout because I was really happy with how they turned out. I will be sure to share the shirts with you once I get then in hand.

*WHEW* Between Gen Con, my Ninja Mountain interview and Dungeon Magazine I have been posting everyday since last Friday! Time for a few days off, good thing the weekend is ahead of us. Fear naught! I will be back here on Monday with another new post for your eyes. Until then...

Rocky Horror DERBY Show Poster - NOW IN COLOR

You might remember the Roller Derby poster that I posted recently. It was the black and white line art stage of the process. I have had a chance to work on it further, and I have for you today the final colors for the Tallahassee Rollergirls Rocky Horror DERBY Show poster.

The bout is next weekend so I will be bringing you the final versions of the poster and related materials to you next week... but before then, there are more pressing matters...

GEN CON! Gen Con starts tomorrow and I am going to be there. I am on a very... VERY early flight to Indianapolis tomorrow morning and I will be doing my best to document what I see and the people I meet and will try to get it all back to here on the blog in a timely matter. Please be aware, as with previous con coverage I will not link directly to artist and people I meet until after the con. It saves me so much time while there to not have to hunt everybody down. If you are going to Gen Con I hope to see you there, if you are not going I hope I can give you a virtual experience!

Next stop... GEN CON! Until then...

WIP - Rocky Horror DERBY Show Poster

Today on the blog I have something I have been working on in the shadows. I sometimes stop and think, "When did I have time for that?!" The Tallahassee Rollergirls have another bout coming up in mid August and I once again designed the art for the big event. Here is the line work for the Rocky Horror DERBY Show poster...

Those who know me well know I don't really do 'pretty' in my work and I find that creating attractive women seems to clash with my natural aesthetic (no horns and tentacles). I know so many artist that seem to be able to create a pleasing female form with their eyes closed. I am not one of them. So these derby posters take a lot out of me artistically. But it is good for me in the end, gets me out of my comfort zone, allows me to better take and use reference for my projects since I rely more heavily on it for a project like this.

For the record, the album art for the London cast soundtrack for the Rocky Horror Picture Show features a tentacle. This is my excuse for why there is a tentacled horror on this poster even though no such thing appears in the movie or play. That is my story and I am keeping to it.

That's all for today. See you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

Rollbots Attack Poster (and more)

June 5th is just around the corner and the Rollbots will soon be here! The poster I created for the Tallahassee Rollergirls is all finished up and off at the printers as I write this. I will hopefully be getting a look at the finished poster later this week, I can't wait! As with the derby poster I created last year, my work does not stop at just the poster. There are a few variations that I need to make to cover the needs of TRG...

They are are also making limited edition t-shirts for the bout with a version of the poster on it. I am a little nervous about this but the two other shirts they have already made this year turned out very well. I will be sure to share the shirt with you after they are printed.

I am already hard at work on my next poster for TRG. This time around the theme is Rocky Horror Derby Show and is for the August home bout. Look for some sneak peaks of the poster in the coming weeks!

I originally planned to share some work with you on Monday but then didn't after I had not received confirmation that it was okay. Well, it turned out that it would have been fine to go ahead and post it... oh well, it will be just as good next week! See you back here on Friday for something new. Until then...

Rollbots Attack Poster - NOW IN COLOR!

I actually just got approval on the final layout of the poster with all text and content. There were some last minute corrections and changes to events. Once I get all the additional related versions of the poster done I will be sure to show it off here.

The ArtOrder Mutation Nation challenge is now over and all the pieces are up for review! Head over to ArtOrder to see everyone's hard work, some really awesome stuff this time around!

That's all for today. As of right now I am planning on something a little different and off subject for Friday. I hope you all find it as interesting as I do. Until then...

WIP - Rollbots Attack Poster

I don't like to tip my hat to things I am working on before they are finished, especially since I usually have a contract stating I can't, but today I am making an exception. Today I bring you a work in progress of one of the two posters that I am working on for the Tallahassee Rollergirls. My artistic liaison with the team, Hope Stewart, is under the weather and I thought that seeing that I am months ahead of deadline might brighten her day. So, here's to you Hope, a work in progress of the Rollbots Attack poster!

How can you go wrong with a theme like Rollbots Attack! I look forward to getting some colors onto it in the very near future... a certain mutant has my attention right now! The 2010 season looks like it is going to be a spectacular one and I happy to be a part of it. Make sure you check back in to see how this poster turns!

Next week looks like it is going to be a crazy week with family in town and wife having her spring break from classes. I will try my best with the blog, but expect some interruptions. Until then...
