Coming to Gen Con 2022 - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia Badge Ribbons!

I am happy to share another surprise I have in store for Gen Con 2022 in August. You can check out the first surprise that I already shared. I present to you with the Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia badge ribbon that you will be able to obtain for free with any purchase!

The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia Badge Ribbon will be available at Gen Con 2022!

If you know Gen Con, then you will know how big badge ribbons are there. You get them from playing Catan, you get them to announce or orientation, or if you are an alley, you get them just about anywhere at the convention. I have seen attendees with badge ribbons stretching to the floor, only for them to have started a second row. I have gotten them, and I think they are a really neat convention-specific item. They were also the first item I wanted to get made for Gen Con back in 2020 when I was initially going to be a Featured Artist. As COVID spread and it became clear that GC would not happen in 2020, I shelved the idea and forgot all about it. A month ago, I remembered that I wanted to have ribbons for the convention and rushed to make it a reality. They have arrived with time to spare, and I can not be happier.

Be sure to stop by artist alley booth 39 for all your Grand Bazaar needs! You can get the tote bags and badge ribbons for FREE with purchases. I hope to see you there as we inch ever closer.

That's all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog. See you back here on Friday! Until then...

Coming to Gen Con 2022 - The Grand Tote Bag of Ethra VanDalia!

I am happy to share the first of several surprises I have in store for Gen Con 2022 in August. I present to you with the Grand Tote Bag of Ethra VanDalia that you will be able to obtain for FREE!

The Grand Tote Bag of Ethra VanDalia will be available at Gen Con 2022!

Dear Wife had another fantastic idea for Gen Con, a tote bag for the books! You can never have enough bags to carry things at a convention, and I am thrilled that we now have a stylish and functional bag to hold all your Grand Bazaar items.

If you are wondering how to get your hands on one, well, first, you need to be at Gen Con. After that, there are two easy ways to get one... for FREE: 1) Purchase all three of my books and both pins 2) Purchase one of the remaining sixteen copies of the deluxe edition of the books. It's that simple! Here is what you get with each of those options.

Purchase the hardcover of the Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDaila, the 5th Edition D&D stats guide, the coloring book, and both pins ($80), and get the tote bag for FREE.

Purchase the deluxe edition of the books ($150 - while supplies last), and get the tote bag for

We will only have limited supplies of tote bags at Gen Con, so you will need to act fast. If this takes off, it might be something we will continue, but it will depend on how popular they are in the event. Judging from my recent other conventions, I feel they will be. Here are a couple images of the items bagged up - please note that all the books fit entirely inside the bag; they are peaking out so you can see them.

Bagged up and ready to go! At Gen Con, the books will be prebagged, signed, and ready to go!

That's all for another exciting Monday on the blog. See you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

THANK YOU!!!

Without your help, we couldn't have done it!

Twenty-two years and one month later, we are funded and on our way to the printers! My endless thanks to everyone that helped to make this day a reality. We could not have done it with you. MANY thanks to Achsa Nute, Steve Leacock, Jon Schindehette, Brian Stillman, and Jeff Solomon for all their work to get the books finished and the Kickstarter created. To all that recorded themselves reading sections of the book, Allen Panakal, Ralph Horsley, Kayla King, Daniel Hooker, Chris Seaman, Iris Compiet, Scott M Fischer, Jabari Weathers, and of course the great Todd Lockwood, THANK YOU for your time and energy to support the project. My personal thanks go to Jason Pedersen, Amy Jiao,  Kat G Birmelin, and last but certainly not least, Jacob Walker for their time and artistic talent in coloring my monsters. And lastly, thanks to each and every one of you that backed the Kickstarter, shared the links, shouted from the rooftops, and supported me along the way! We made it! It's done, and there will be books soon!

After a little rest, it will be time to double down on getting back to work on the next books in the series. I have many more stories to tell, monsters to create, and art to make.

I have a lot of non-Grand Bazaar blog posts to share with you. Stuff that has been sitting around and waiting for me to have the time to share it. Well, now that the Kickstarter is over and the Grand Bazaar is out of my hands, I will have that time.

That's all for another VERY exciting Monday on the blog, see you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

If you missed it yesterday, I was on the One Fantastic Week Podcast yesterday and had a great time. I talked about the Grand Bazaar Kickstarter, making art, balancing time, and what I have been up to in the past six years since I was on episode 6 of the podcast 6 years ago. I had a ton of fun, and I think I may have passed along some helpful information.

If you have a chance, by all means, have a watch. You might learn a thing or two about something!

A Closer Look at the Grand Coloring Book of Ethra VanDalia!

Bring a little color to the Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia.

Guest contributor Achsa Nute has some information regarding the Grand Coloring Book of Ethra VanDalia!

I don’t know if you heard, but we’re doing a coloring book from the BAZAAR!!! I’ve always liked the line art that comes at the beginning of Chris’s work. I always thought it would be fun to color. So I looked into what makes a good coloring book.

Images are single-sided with black backs.

It will be printed on good paper stock with images on only one side, so you don’t have to decide which picture to sacrifice. The back of each image will be printed in solid black to help prevent bleeding for anyone who likes to use markers.

At the centerfold is the Grand Map of the Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

The map will be a two page spread across the center of the book, so if you want to keep it all attached, it’ll still be easy to color, but if you don’t, it’s all on one sheet.  We did our best to clean up a few of the earlier images that were from photos to make it complete, but most importantly, ALL of the environments have been made into lovely lines for your Bazaar coloring satisfaction. I feel like these will also make amazing gifts for those awesome kids and adults who love coloring and don’t get enough monsters.

Enjoy!

Kickstarter goes live February 29

Lord Mashugana (Shug) Nute, Sovereign of the Nine Couches, Emancipator of the Pork Chickens, and Eater of Tacos

In late 2013 we lost our elder statesman at the age of 20. Before I ever knew him, he had been a friend to my wife for many years. I was lucky enough to know him the majority of his long life that encluded adventure, travel, and the quest for tasty, tasty food. He possessed the keenest of intelligence and an almost human spirit and the capacity for deep empathy.

For the winter solstice I presented my wife this image of Shug. It was a piece I have been wanting to create for six years, but I was not ready or able to make it until now. Achsa confirmed that if it had arrived any sooner then now it most likely would have never been hung in the house. The pain of his loss was still to present. It was challenging to work on this without her knowing, but I was able to keep it a surprise. Please, note that his medals are all foods that he was able to best in the quest to eat all the things. Here is my portrait of Shug.

As I said, I have wanted to create this image for six years. While the presentation was not new six years ago, I found it funny that this year many services and companies seem to have popped up to sell photo manipulated portraits of people's animals on the bodies of humans, usually in military or Victorian attire.  I guess I was a little ahead of things, but I didn't get around to it until it had become mainstream. At least mine is an original drawing. Here it is framed.

I wanted a proper frame that fit the look and feel for the piece and I think I found it.

Please know that this is a unique piece, and I am not open to these types of commission,s nor will I draw anyone else's pet. This is a service I retain for my wife and the memory of those unique animals that share their lives with us.

That is all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog, see you back here tomorrow or Friday. Until then...

The Grand Bazaar Comes to Illuxcon NEXT WEEK!

Illuxcon 2019 is next week (October 23-27) in Reading, PA. It is one of our favorite events of the year, and as I have mentioned several times here on the blog, this year will be even more special for me. The work that I have been creating for the Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia over the past five years will be on display and available for the first time. I will have a new selection of limited edition prints that are distressed, marked, stamped, and assembled by hand as a collaboration between myself and Achsa Nute. I will be hosting a monster making and drawing workshop. Here are more details on all of these things.

Some see me in Studio 411 bright and early at 10am till 1pm for a talk and demo of making monsters!

On the morning of Thursday, October 24th, from 10-1, I will be hosting a monster making workshop. I will talk about the methods and processes I use to create monsters that I have implemented for over twenty years when working on television, film, and games. I will discuss my approach to monster creation with examples of my work and then will do a live drawing demo as I design and render a monster, time permitting. More information about this can be found HERE.

Each edition is limited to 25 prints that are distressed, marked, stamped, and assembled by hand as a collaboration between myself and Achsa Nute.

I will once again be debuting a new series of limited edition hand altered prints at IX. As with last year, these are a collaboration between myself and Achsa Nute. Unlike last year when I only had one print, we created three for this year. All three appear in the book and relate to the character Shaper and their creations. They will be available individually or as a set at a discounted price. More information about this can be found HERE.

Last but certainly not least, I will exhibiting all but three illustrations that I created for The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia in the Main Show. All of the work that I have created for the book will be on display and available for purchase for the first time. These sales will be going toward the printing costs for the book that will be coming to crowdfunding early next year unless something unexpected happens.

If you cannot attend and had a particular piece from the book you were interested in, I will be opening up all art for sale to anyone interested on the morning of Friday, October 25. Please understand that people attending the event have first dibs and that with my workshop Thursday, it will not be possible to add one more thing to that day. For those interested, the best way to contact me will be through Facebook Messenger or the contact points on my website (please email or text; I will not be able to take calls). I have not shared all of the work that I have created, but you can see much of it here on the blog. Most posts have links to the main piece from the book. Once Illuxcon is over, all work will not be available again until the crowdfunding for the book begins. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave them here, and I will answer them ASAP. Here is a sample of some of what will be at Illuxcon next week.
