Sure, Reprint Them ALL - Star Wars Allies and Adversaries

As I mentioned last week, I cleaned up my studio recently, and a bunch of items featuring my work surfaced. Granted, all of these items feature work that has already been used before, or in some cased, MANY times before. This time around, I have for you the Star Wars Allies and Adversaries, which reprints a bunch of my Star Wars work in one handy dandy volume. Nice to see it all again in print, and they did credit me this time around. I have powerful memories of making each of these pieces, which is interesting to me. When I look at the paintings, I remember very clearly working on them and what was going through my head when I was. I guess I did something right when I did these since so many keep being reprinted.

Creatures of the Galaxy Adversary Deck - The Return of the Ronto

I keep stumbling across instances of my Star Wars illustrations being reused on various other Star Wars projects. This time around I have for you the Creatures of the Galaxy Adversary Deck from 2016. It has been under my radar for over three years, so better late than never to share it. The adversary deck sees the return of the Enraged Ronto that I originally painted in 2013 for the Suns of Fortune Star Wars RPG supplement. Here is a look at the new incarnation of the art as the Enraged Ronto.

To be honest when I learned that I had work in this deck I was expecting it to be the Nexu or a Rancor. Not really sure why I had not considered the Ronto as an option. I was a little surprised but glad to see it saw the light of day a second time. Not sure how many people ever saw it in Suns of Fortune the first time around. If for some reason you are hunting down Creatures of the Galaxy Adversary Deck to complete your collection of my work, here is an image of the front of the packaging so that you can get the correct one.

Lastly, here is the original illustration for the Enraged Ronto. You can have a look at the entire beast and not be distracted by the stock background they added to it in the deck version.

Enraged Ronto - Edge of the Empire: Suns of Fortune - Process

Keeping the Star Wars heavy content on the blog going... Back in February I shared with you my work from the Star Wars RPG supplement, Suns of Fortune. Today I have for you the process that went into on of my piece appearing in the book, the Enraged Ronto. So that we are all on the same page, here is how the final piece turned out...

As with most of my Star Wars work I have a ton of reference to work from. Some the this reference is park of my collection of... reference... that I have been collecting since... 1978, while other reference is easily acquired. For the Ronto I was already good to go and just looked to my Ronto figure and the work of Terryl Whitlatch who was responsible for designing the Ronto. With reference in hand I got started on some thumbnails...

I unusually produce a minimum of three thumbnails, but I felt like my I covered all my bases with these two. After all, it is a Ronto rearing up, no need to reinvent the wheel. Option A was the winner this time around and it was time to get started on the final drawing...

I was unprepared with how much fun it is to draw Rontos. I had just so much fun on this one I kind of didn't want to stop working on it. This excitement for drawing Rontos made it easy to complete the next stage. Back in March I shared with you the toned paper drawing on this Ronto. Here it is again for all your toned paper Ronto drawing needs...

The drawing was approved without issue and it was time to get started on the painting. Since this is an isolated figure piece it was really straight forward and the focus is just making a cool looking figure rather then controlling an entire environment. I just nine easy steps the Ronto painting came together... not really, but here is a look at the process steps and a handy dandy animated progression too...

Enraged Ronto - Animated process thingy

After submitting there was one note to adjust the front leg that is farthest from the viewer. It was a quick fix and due to the way I go about making my painting this change is permanently incorporated into the piece and there is no longer a clear before and after state. The change was to shift the leg a little closer in towards the body of the Ronto. You might notice a little shift in the foot during the animated progression, that is the revision edit. Here again is the final Ronto painting for you viewing pleasure...

Star Wars toned paper adventures - Bucking Ronto

Concluding a very Star Wars week on the blog I have for you a new toned paper drawing. This time around I revisited the Enraged Ronto that I did for the Star Wars RPG supplement Suns of Fortune. Not sure what else to say... so here is now the final drawing turned out...

That Ronto is so wonderfully "derpy" and was a ton of fun to work up on the toned paper. It is always nice to be able to work off of really nice creature designs. A good foundation offers so much more room to play with it and bring some of my own esthetic to the final product. Here are some images of the piece coming together... as captured in different cities and in different lighting situations...

Star Wars - Edge of the Empire - Suns of Fortune

Today on the blog I have for you some new Star Wars work! This time around I have a pair of book illustrations that appear in the recently released source book for the Edge of the Empire, Suns of Fortune. Suns of Fortune focuses on the Corellian system (where Han Solo is from) and the surrounding sectors of space, lets have a look...

Froz was a planet that was completely destroyed by an Imperial orbital bombardment and I was asked to depict a couple of mercenaries... or fortune hunters... or possibly relief workers scouring the still burning wreckage of the planet. The piece required some crazy bleed on two sides of the piece, which is why there is a lot of open destruction on the top and right side. Below, you can see how the piece was cropped down. For the Ronto I was asked to depict and Ronto rearing up and freaking out... done and done! Rontos are fun to draw. Here is how the pieces looked in the book (which is in stores now! and sorry for the crappy images)...

Cropped Froz destruction

It is SO enraged that it had to take on the entire page... RAWR!

Thanks goes out to Zoe Robinson for another exciting Star Wars project! There will be more Star Wars on the blog in the fullness of time... RAWR!

That is all for another exciting Wednesday, see you back here on Friday! Until then...
