The FINAL THREE Foil Festering Mummy Artist Proofs

*UPDATE* And they are all sold! Thanks, everyone!

I am down to my final three foil Festering Mummy artist proofs. The Festering Mummy was released in the Amonkhet wave of Magic the Gathering. As with other artist proof that I am close to selling out of, I have put drawings on their backs, and I am now offering them as two separate options. The first option is a pairing of two cards with a recreation of the card art across their backs. The second option is a single card depicting my favorite zombie from the movie All Souls Day: Dia De Los Muertos, which I happened to design and perform as. These are the last and final foil APs available for this card. I have no idea when or if it will ever be reprinted, so for the foreseeable future, this is your last opportunity to get one of these. Here is a look at the cards and the art.

A very hungry zombie that went by the name of Bloated Choppers (SOLD)

If I still have either of these next week, I will be bringing them to IX with me. Here is a look at just the art on the backs of the artist proofs.

That's all for another exciting Tuesday on the blog. See you back here tomorrow. Until then...

Art of Amonkhet Book

File this under better late than never. Last week I finally shared the process that went into making the Festering Mummy painting for Magic the Gathering. Today I have for you the Art of Amonkhet Book that features the Festering Mummy. This came out in 2017 if I remember correctly, and of course, now that we are approaching mid-2019 I am sharing it. This is the second Art of Magic the Gathering I have had my work featured in. It is a gorgeous book filled with beautiful art, and I highly recommend anyone interested in seeing Magic art printed larger than a trading card to pick one up. Enough of my yammering, here are some images related to all of this.

Festering Mummy - Amonkhet - PROCESS

Today I have for you an overdue post about the process and steps that went into a Magic the Gathering piece of mine that I first shared with you way back in April of 2017, the Festering Mummy. This was the first opportunity to create a self-portrait on a Magic card, and I had a lot of fun working on it. To start things off, here is the final art for Festering Mummy.

As with all of my pieces I began with a photo shoot of reference to get my head around the physicality of the piece, composition, and lighting. Dear Wife took many a silly photo of me being a mummy. Once the photo shoot was completed, I got to work on a series of thumbnails that distilled my ideas down to something usable. Many of these I was excited to work on.

As you can see option 'B' was the winner. I was putting my money on 'A,' 'D,' and 'E,' but it was not meant to be. There was concept work in the style guide for this set of Magic that depicted mummies without arms. I was fascinated by that and had wanted to do a mummy that was armless but still a danger with its mouth. Maybe another day. Now that I had an approved thumbnail it was time to work on the final drawing.

This drawing came together quickly and easily. You can even watch the drawing being created with this handy dandy time-lapse video I shot while working on this set. Now you can watch and learn all my drawing secrets.

With a finished drawing, it was time for the tonal study for the piece where I work out the lighting and values. Not much more to add. It is just the heavy lifting of figuring out the painting.

Now that all the prep work was completed and I had a little bit of an idea of what  I was going to do with this piece it was time to paint. This piece came together quickly and was a straight forward painting. A relatively isolated figure on a low definition background. No horror stories to share on this one, it was only a matter of putting in the time working to get it completed.

To better show, the painting taking shape here is an animated progression of the painting taking shape. Little by little it becomes a monster.

And with that, the painting was completed. There were no edits or revisions with this piece, and it was approved after submission. Here again, is the final art of the Festering Mummy as well as the production card.

Slipping Through the Cracks - MtG Festering Mummy - Tonal study

With all the complexities of life sometime work slips through the cracks. Case in point, the tonal study that I did for the Festering Mummy from the Magic the Gathering expansion, Amonkhet. Somehow it never made it up here on the blog. Poor overlooked tonal study... Oversight corrected!

This piece, and MANY others, will be with me at Gen Con 50 next week in Indianapolis! Come see me at Artist Alley table 27 on August 17-20. Be one of the first to the opportunity to give this piece a forever home!

Festering Mummy Drawing Time Lapse - Magic the Gathering

Today I have for you another time lapse video that I recorded about a year ago. This is the drawing for the Festering Mummy that I did for the Amonkhet expansion to Magic the Gathering. This expansion just came out so I am actually posting this when it is half way relevant. First things first, here is how the final drawing turned out...

The video should speak for itself. If you follow my blog at all you will be familiar with my thumbnails that I create as part of the process of creating an illustration. When I go about making the final drawing I use the approved thumbnail as a guide. I make changes and corrections along the way, which you can clearly see in the video when I erase and rework various parts as well as slim down the body and limbs. If all goes as planned, which it mostly did here, it comes together quickly so that I can move onto the next step in the process, the painting. Here is how the final painting turned out, you can compare the drawing with the painitng to see how they are interconnected...

I will be sharing more about this piece when I finally get to the process post for it... which at I current pace will be sometime later in the year.

Festering Mummy - MtG - Amonkhet

The entire set of Amonkhet, the newest expansion to Magic the Gathering, was spoiled last week. This means I can now share my card coming out as part of Amonkhet. I present you with the Festering Mummy...

Nothing like getting to paint yourself as a rotting mummy lurching its way across the cursed sands of a distant world of magic and monsters. This was my first opportunity to directly use myself as reference in a Magic card and I believe I got in there the appropriate about of RAWR! A HUGE thanks goes out to Cynthia Sheppard for the Festering Mummy assignment!

While the final for this piece was digital, the original drawings associated with this piece will be available soon. Prints will be also be available soon. Finally, artist proofs will be available once the set is released and I have received them. Here is a look at the final card version of the Festering Mummy...

In search of Monsters - London, England (Part 2)

Today I have for you a look at the second part of London, England... or should I say I have for you a handful of the hundreds of images that I took while visiting London.  The British Museum is jam packed from one side to the other with amazing artifacts from human history. You want to see the wonders of the humanity all in one building? Head to the British Museum! The items are all astounding, but as a reference resource I was just floored. My eyes were opened time and time again to what the actual artifacts of our history look like. Here is the second part of London...
