A Second Look at Older Work - Never Released Part 5

I am still SUPER swamped, so I have for you another unreleased piece from many moons ago.

First and foremost, I can not tell you anything about this work or the project it was created for. I would love to, but I can't, so please do not ask or try to guess.

Continuing from the last post in the series back in October, I am sharing some design work that never went anywhere. As mentioned before, this was a project that I was really excited about, but the pay was criminally low, I did a ton of work on it, and it never went anywhere. Not sure I can saw much more about it, other than I still have all the art I made for it and likely will forever. I would have been cool.

A Second Look at Older Work - Never Released Part 4

I am still SUPER swamped, so I have for you another unreleased piece from many moons ago.

First and foremost, I can not tell you anything about this work or the project it was created for. I would love to, but I can't, so please do not ask or try to guess.

This time, we are switching projects, companies, and end products. This work was initially done in 2010, and the project was never released. The entire line that this and another piece were created for was killed before it went anywhere. Twelve years ago, I was able to share these for the first and only time, so it seemed like this piece should get in the spotlight again. This one hurt a bit. Not only was I hoping to see this as a finished product, but I did all of the work for the project TWICE before it was eventually killed. The first set of drawings below is the second set that I created for the project. The set at the bottom was an entire set made from an approved front design... and was later not approved. And I got paid around a dollar, and all this work took easily 40+ hours when it was all said and done. But I still have all the drawings in a binder.

A Second Look at Older Work - Never Released Part 3

I am still SUPER swamped, so I have for you another unreleased piece from many moons ago.

First and foremost, I can not tell you anything about this work or the project it was created for. I would love to, but I can't, so please do not ask or try to guess.

Next up is this beefy stampy hooved burny skull dude. This turnaround would have been for something really cool, but it is now a stack of drawings in a binder. This was done back in 2008, and I was given permission to share them in late 2011 or early 2012, and they have been filed away ever since. This is still one of my favorites from the project. This one would have been so neat. Oh well.

A Second Look at Older Work - Never Released Part 2

I am still SUPER swamped, so I have for you another unreleased piece from many moons ago.

First and foremost, I can not tell you anything about this work or the project it was created for. I would love to, but I can't, so please do not ask or try to guess.

Next up is this little horned doggo dude. This turnaround would have been for something really cool, but it is now a stack of drawings in a binder. This was done back in 2008, and I was given permission to share them in late 2011 or early 2012, and they have been filed away ever since. Not bad for being seventeen years old. It has its issues, but it is not bad.

A Second Look at Older Work - Never Released Part 1

I was having too much fun sharing old work, and I am swamped currently and do not have the time to write the posts I really want to share, so we are going to look back at some more old work. This time around, I will be sharing work that was completed but never used or released. I have been given permission to share all of this work many years ago, but it is likely work you may have not seen before.

First and foremost, I can not tell you anything about this work or the project it was created for. I would love to, but I can't, so please do not ask or try to guess.

Starting things off is this little bat dude. This turnaround would have been for something really cool, but it is now a stack of drawings in a binder. This was done back in 2008, and I was given permission to share them in late 2011 and early 2012, and have been filed away ever since. It is crazy to realize that this is seventeen years old now, and that was done only three years into my career in games. Not bad. It has its issues, but it is not bad.

Warmachine - No Quarter 51

A couple of weeks ago I shared with you a book that featured some of my art that I was completely unaware of. Today I have for you another bit of published work that I was completely unaware of, this time it is in the form of a magazine. Back in 2013 one of my concepts from my time working on Warmachine miniature was shared in the 51st issue of No Quarter magazine. Not sure how this changes anything now... nearly 5 years later, but it is sure neat to see it now...

Raluk Moorclaw, The Ironmonger concept hanging out as a preview

Finding my work in this magazine was way more easy then finding it in Dungeonology. I was always happy with this design, but it sure took a lot of work to finally finalize it. Even then it changed a little bit as it became a miniature, No matter what, in the end Raluk Moorclaw, The Ironmonger was a cool design and a fun miniature. Here is the full turnaround for this design...

Who know what other published work of mine is out there that I don't know about. There certainly some illegally published work of mine out there... but that is a story for another day.

Star Spawn - Arkham Horror Monsters

Back in August I shared with you my Star Spawn miniature that is part of the 2nd Edition release of Mansions of Madness. I also mentioned that the Star Spawn would also be included in the Arkham Horror Monsters line of prepainted miniatures. That time has come and I am happy to share with you some images of the production miniature of my Star Spawn design...

Pretty cool if I do say so myself! I think that the miniature really turned out great and is extremely faithful to my design. Here again is my turnaround for the Star Spawn so that you can compare...

This was the very last design that I did for this line of miniatures. I am thankful that they finally all made it into production, even if it took one seven years. Hopefully there will be another great line of miniatures for me to work on, if not, I guess I will just have to make my own...

Star Spawn Miniature - Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition

Very excited to finally share this with work with you today. I have only been waiting 7 years for this piece to finally come out. With the announcement of the 2nd Edition release of Mansions of Madness I can now share the Star Spawn miniature design that I did back in 2009. While I have had to wait a while for pieces to finally come out, this by far is the reigning champ for the most delayed release. Better late then never! Here is the initial design for the Star Spawn...

You can imagine my reaction when I looked into the display case at Gen Con during set up. I did a double take since it had been 7 years since I worked on this piece and it has been years since I actually looked at the drawing. I was told years ago when it was not released with the rest of the Arkham Horror miniatures that it would eventually be out as a part of "something special". Well, that day has come and the 2nd Edition release of Mansions of Madness must be pretty special!

Here are two views of the complete turnaround for the Star Spawn. You might notice an edit to the texture of the legs that was requested after the final 3/4 view was created. The right wing in the rear view was a separate drawing that was digitally added for the turnaround.

Since I am sharing everything, because why not it has bee 7 years, here is a look at the very rough scribbly thumbnails that I turned in for miniature concepts. This is the highly detailed and clear roughs that I use to turn in 7 years ago. Scribble scribble scribble...

If the release of the Star Spawn in Mansions of Madness after a 7 year wait was not good enough, it looks like a fully painted version of the Star Spawn will be available later in the year! Looking forward to having this fellow on my shelf with the rest of my miniatures. RAWR!

Skarlock Commander - Warmachine - Privateer Press

For today's post I have something all the way from 2011 that is finally out in the world. That something would be none other then the Skarlock Commander which is the second miniature I ever designed for Privateer Press. So those that play Warmachine can now enjoy the mighty Skarlock Commander...

More or less I think this piece weathered the production process fairly intact. There are always the changes that need to occur so that the piece can actually be created. Here is how the final production turned out...

I was working on this piece at the same time I was working on Raluk Moorclaw. As with Raluk, I am not sure I have any great earth shattering story or anecdote to go along with this design. It was just a lot of time and work to get familiar with the project IP and to try to make something very cool. I worked very closely with the Privateer Press Art Director at the time, Chris Walton, and he got me through it all and was a great source of feedback, design notes, and art direction. Though I lack stories I can share with you is a WHOLE ton of concepts, roughs, and monster drawings...

Raluk Moorclaw, The Ironmonger - Warmachine - Privateer Press

Holy cow! Straight from 2011 the very first miniature I ever designed for Privateer Press is NOW finally out! Can't believe it has been this long... 2011... how times files, and talk about production schedules. So thoses that play Warmachine can now enjoy the mighty Trollkin Mercenary, Raluk Moorclaw...

Besides a pose change the design seems to have made it through the production intact. Which is always nice! Here is how the final production turned out...

Since this was my first piece for Privateer Press... and it was done like a million years ago in the life span of making monsters I am not sure I really have any great or witty stories to share about this piece. I spent most of my time while working on this by getting use to the IP, the art director, and the whole process for making miniatures for Privateer Press. What I can share with you is a WHOLE ton of concepts, roughs, and monster man drawings...

Razor Boars - Hordes - Privateer Press

First post of 2014! Starting things off with something I managed to go pretty much all of 2013 without posting... partially because I never knew it had been released! I am usually more on top of when my work is released, but this one slipped by me. Here are my final designs for the Razor Boars for the Privateer miniatures games, Hordes...

Now if you are thinking to yourself that you are very familiar with the Hordes miniatures, but you don't recognize these at all while you may be familiar with the name... There are reasons for this. Here is what the production Razor Boars look like...

Looks like there were some additional edits, changes, and revisions after I turned in my designs! These things happen, while rare, it is inherit in the production of products like miniatures. Actually, most of the work for hire contracts that I sign state that the work I turn in is open to be revised, edited, or even changed out right by the client (read those contracts!). If this happened earlier in my career I would have been devastated and my ego crushed... thankfully my skin has gotten thinker and I have gotten a lot more caviler about the life span of my work once it leaves my hands. This only took five years and some really rough blows to my art self esteem.

As an added bonus, here are a bunch of my designs and concepts that went into the different parts and pieces of the Razor Boar...

Gobber Tinker - Warmachine - Privateer Press

Way back in February of 2012 I worked on a Warmachine Gobber miniature design for the good folks over at Privateer Press. That miniature is now out and I am happy to share it with you today! You might remember my Skorne Mammoth also from the Warmachine line that I shared with you earlier this year. Due to the prolonged complexities of miniatures the gap of time from design to release can be pretty hefty. Enough talk, bring on the Gobber...

Gobber Tinker - Back

The idea behind this little guy is that he is a roving "Mr. Fit It" and carries everything he needs to fix up a damaged Warjack. It was a pretty straight forward piece... I just had to get my head around the very specific established Gobber design and make sure what I designed would fit on the mini base. As with most Privateer Press design work I have done, it continues to evolve once it leaves my hands. Here is how the final production miniature turned out...

As an added bonus, here are a bunch of my designs and concepts that went into the different parts and pieces of the Gobber Tinker. They are in no real order but you can see how this piece came together...

The project that will never be... Part 2

While at Gen Con I unexpectedly got permission to share with you the following images that I produced for a project that will never be. I got this permission under the agreement that I can not discuss ANY details about this project... not even the company I produced these for. SO, with that in mind I ask that you not try to guess who or what this was and for whom they were produced. I would hate to have to pull this post down.

Earlier this month I shared with you the first of these two unproduced pieces. While the creation of this one was not as colorful as the previous one I shared, there was still a lot to time, work, and effort put into these drawings. SO, nearly 3 years after creating this I can now share it with you. This project may not have worked out the way I had hoped, but at least now I can share with you all the work I did...

As before, here are some of the initial concepts that I did for this piece. Again, I was working on paper throughout the entire concept process... cause I like to draw and stuff...

What was lost to the trials and tribulations of production cancellations now drift off into the microcosm of the internet. ...to be as unseen there as it was unseen in a stack of papers in my house...
