ArtOrder Challenge - Lovecraft Creature Lab - Byakhee

The ArtOrder Lovecraft Creature Lab Challenge wraps up today. Lots of great looking work starting to show up in the submission forum. If you have a chance I suggest you stop by and have a look!

On Monday I share with you my Deep One that I chose not to enter since the challenge called for non humanoid creatures. To insure I would not get disqualified for not following instructions I went ahead and created a second submission. I present to you my official submission to the Lovecraft Creature Lab Challenge, a BYAKHEE.

Byakhee, something I cannot and must not recall.

There flapped rhythmically a horde of tame, trained, hybrid winged things ... not altogether crows, nor moles, nor buzzards, nor ants, nor decomposed human beings, but something I cannot and must not recall.
—H. P. Lovecraft, "The Festival"

In the end I think I am much more happy with how the Deep One came out. It is hard to go wrong with a blasphemous fish frog! I look forward to seeing everyone's work once the judging has concluded. Should be lots of unnameable tentacled horror to feast the eyes one.

Don't forget! On Wednesday October 13th my 'Blending In' shirt will be on sale over at TeeFury.com for only 24 hours!

That is all for another week! See you back here next week for a look at another event I have coming up in October as well as lot and lot of t-shirt reminder! Until then...

My first TeeFury shirt - NEXT WEEK!

As I mentioned last week on October 13th (one week from today!) my first TeeFury shirt will be available for sale! The shirt will be only on sale for the 24 hours that make up October 13th so you will need to mark your calendars and be ready to buy 10 - 20 of these bad boys! I am sure you are still wondering what this shirt is going to have on it... how about a giant beetle that is just trying to blend in...

"Blending In" - Available through TeeFury.com on Oct 13th for 24 hours!

Sure to become an instant collectors item you will need to buy enough to last the rest of your life. Be sure to buy in various sizes to accommodate the possible changes your body might go through. I of course only mean all this in jest... or do I?

We are heading into the holiday gift season and who would not want to find one of these waiting for them on one of any number of gift giving events that may or may not be associated with any number of major or minor religious or secular events...

That is enough of a sales pitch for today. I will be back here on Friday with my official submission to the ArtOrder Lovecraft Creature Lab Challenge. Until then...

ArtOrder Challenge - Lovecraft Creature Lab

Over on ArtOrder the Lovecraft Creature Lab Challenge is wrapping up this week. Not to miss out on a chance to draw some Lovecraftian monsters I managed to get some time together and work on a drawing. Turns out peoples definitions of what constitutes a humanoid monster differs greatly from mine own. So to not ruffle any feathers I am not submitting this design for the challenge. There is no reason not to share it here though! I present to you, a DEEP ONE.

A Deep One, they were the blasphemous fish-frogs of the nameless design - living and horrible.
© 2010 Christopher Burdett
I think their predominant color was a greyish-green, though they had white bellies. They were mostly shiny and slippery, but the ridges of their backs were scaly. Their forms vaguely suggested the anthropoid, while their heads were the heads of fish, with prodigious bulging eyes that never closed. At the sides of their necks were palpitating gills, and their long paws were webbed. They hopped irregularly, sometimes on two legs and sometimes on four. I was somehow glad that they had no more than four limbs. Their croaking, baying voices, clearly used for articulate speech, held all the dark shades of expression which their staring faces lacked ... They were the blasphemous fish-frogs of the nameless design - living and horrible.

The Shadow Over Innsmouth
Fear naught, I found a little more time and did complete an official submission for the challenge. I will be sharing it with you here later in the week. This guy was really fun to work on and I found him to be very useful to me in the end... but I will have more on that in the future...

Be back here on Wednesday when I unveil my TeeFury shirt deign that will be on sale on Oct 13th! Until then...

Taking the Imposing Demon back - part 4

You might remember the posts concerning some really crappy drawings I did for the Imposing demon used on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If you need a reminder you can see them HERE, HERE and HERE. I had a few more spare moments to finally rework the last version of the demon, without further delay, concept "D"...

Consider the Imposing Demon officially taken back!

Another more successful drawing in my eyes though the judges are still out if this is a better version of the design. Now that the Imposing Demon has been taken back I am already looking at other deserving candidates from my time on Buffy and Angel. Maybe I will have something new along these lines in the near future.

That is all for this week on the blog. Be sure to stop back by next week, especially on Wednesday when I reveal my TeeFury shirt design! Until then...

My first TeeFury shirt (SOON!)

Those of you who follow my Facebook Fan Page have already heard the whispers...

I am pleased to announce that I will have my first shirt available through TeeFury on October 13th! Mark your calendars! I will be previewing the actual design next Wednesday, Oct 6th. What I can tell you today is that a monster will adorn the shirt... but I am sure you figured that out already. I will leave you with this teaser image that has little to nothing to do with the actual shirt.

Not shown to scale or in production colors... What could it be?!

For those of you unfamiliar with TeeFury, they sell one shirt a day and it is only for sale for that 24 hour block of time and then it is gone. I will have more on this next week and do not worry, I will be ever vigilante in reminding EVERYONE about this. I will insure you know about this!

That is all for today. I will be back with some pencil on paper on Friday. Until then...

Geek Night 2010 wrap up

Back on my feet and ready to talk about Geek Night 2010. First let me say I did have photos of Lee Bretschneider and Justin Peterson tables at Geek Night but they turned out so horribly that it would have done them an disservice to show them here. I am sure they will blog or post about their adventures at Geek Night, so please stop by their sites when you have a chance. My apologies for having an unreliable camera.

Geek Night 2010! Way better then last year. It was crazy busy and a blur of a night. Last year people just wanted to get their sketch card and get out but this year folks wanted to talk and were willing to wait to have a custom sketch drawn for them. I still have many of the sketch cards I created in advance, but I know I will be able to put them to good use later. Enough talk... bring on the pictures!

My table set up with my huge custom banner I made myself in case there was not one provided for me by the event. ...note to self, bring at least 4 more next time...

An event like this is the perfect opportunity to give away older promotional items! And look, you can win a free print and get a free sketch card!

Here is that canvas print of the Scuttling Grizzly again. The first person that walked up to my Friday night pointed at it and ask, "Did you make that?" and when I him I had he followed up with, "Did you make the pictures on the computer too?"

This would be the before mentioned "free print". 11 x 17 inches of tentacled horror. Really happy with how this one turned out.

And last but not least, our winner of the print! Congrats!

A big thanks to everyone at the FSU Union Productions for having us out again this year and to everyone that came out! I hope you all enjoy your sketch cards and that you had a fun time. I know I did!

If you missed out on Geek Night, don't worry, I have another event coming up at the end of October! More on this soon!

See you back hear on Wednesday for something new. Until then...

One more day...

I had a full and busy weekend to say the least with Geek Night, work and the marriage of my best friend. Coupled with a less then stable internet connection today and way too much to get done I will be postponing today's blog post till tomorrow. I do not want to leave you empty handed, I have for you a image from Geek Night 2010.

...wait... is that a canvas print of one of my paintings?

15 x 20 inches of canvas printed goodness. It is like I actually made something tangible!

I would be remiss if I didn't congratulate Rodney and Amy on their big day yesterday!. You guys rock!

See you back here tomorrow for my full coverage of Geek Night 2010. Until then...
