Revisiting Dark Heresy: Daemon Hunter - Pink Horror

Either in late 2010 or very early 2011, I worked on one of several Warhammer 40K assignments. At the time, I was doing a lot of them for very, very low pay, as was common at the time. Learning a lot and making monsters for pennies on the dollar. One of the assignments was for a quartet of monsters from the RPG supplement Dark Heresy: Daemon Hunter. I always liked these monsters a lot, and I can see things starting to click for me in the creation of these. I thought I would revisit these pieces, share the drawings for them that have never been shared (it looks like I never shared the process either, but that isn't happening today), and show off a monster that is now sixteen years old. This is one of my two favorite of the pieces done for the book, next week's in my favorite of the assignemnt.

Revisiting Dark Heresy: Daemon Hunter - Daemonette

Either in late 2010 or very early 2011, I worked on one of several Warhammer 40K assignments. At the time, I was doing a lot of them for very, very low pay, as was common at the time. Learning a lot and making monsters for pennies on the dollar. One of the assignments was for a quartet of monsters from the RPG supplement Dark Heresy: Daemon Hunter. I thought I would revisit these pieces, share the drawings for them that have never been shared (it looks like I never shared the process either, but that isn't happening today), and show off a monster that is now sixteen years old. This is another one they wanted me to stretch out, again, I prefer the proportions in the drawing over the painting.

Revisiting Dark Heresy: Daemon Hunter - Bloodletter

Either in late 2010 or very early 2011, I worked on one of several Warhammer 40K assignments. At the time, I was doing a lot of them for very, very low pay, as was common at the time. Learning a lot and making monsters for pennies on the dollar. One of the assignments was for a quartet of monsters from the RPG supplement Dark Heresy: Daemon Hunter. I thought I would revisit these pieces, share the drawings for them that have never been shared (it looks like I never shared the process either, but that isn't happening today), and show off a monster that is now sixteen years old. For whatever reason, they made me make this guy tall and spindly rather than beefy, but that is their call, I liked him beefy.

Dark Heresy: Daemon Hunter (part 2)

Wrapping up a week of new work I have for you the second half of the demons that I produced for the Fantasy Flight Games release of Dark Heresy: Daemon Hunter, RPG supplement. If you missed it, part 1 can be seen on Wednesday's post. For some reason I feel compelled to mention yet again, thanks to seeing these at Gen Con I can now share them with you...

The Plaguebearer turned out to be my favorite of the four since it was very much more to my sensibilities. You know, all rotted, bloated, torn open and dripping... because that means much more interesting forms and textures! These all came together fairly easily and quickly except the Daemonette. I was not happy with the first drawing I submitted for it and after shooting more reference submitted the drawing for the version you see above. Games Workshop requested some changes to the final of the Daemonette as well, but those were minor tweaks to the face. I pose for most of the monsters I create but sometimes I am just not right for a monster. My wife got to be the reference for the Daemonette and she did a stellar job of it!

That is all for another exciting week on the blog! See you back here on Monday for some MORE new work! Until then...

Dark Heresy: Daemon Hunter (part 1)

Continuing a week of new work I have for you today the first installment of demon monsters that I produced for the Fantasy Flight Games release of Dark Heresy: Daemon Hunter, RPG supplement. It feels like I worked on these a million years ago, but I think it has been less then one year. Again, thanks to seeing these at Gen Con I can now share them with you...

Not only does it feel like I did these a million years ago it also feels like I was working on dozens and dozens of these all at the same time. Not sure where that is coming from, I did do a lot of 40K monsters back to back, but not anything near that many. Anyway... these were really fun to work and to pose for. More silly pictures out there of me acting like a demon monster. Images of the miniatures were provided to me and I had different amounts of room to make them my own depending on the demon type. The Bloodletter needed to be pretty spot on while I was able to cobble together my own Pink Horror. As a whole they needed to be extremely faithful to the miniature reference which can have it's pros and cons. Fun to draw and paint monsters all the same!

See you back here on Friday for part 2 and more demon monsters! Until then...

The Black Sepulchre - Dark Heresy

The Black Sepulchre, the newest gaming supplement for Dark Heresy is out and I contributed a piece to it. For those that don't know, the Dark Heresy RPG is set in the grim dark future of the Warhammer 40k universe. The Black Sepulchre allowed me to add my own voice to the 40k universe with the designing of some original monsters. I was tasked with coming up with Thrung's Pets, a pair of hyena alligator mutants. This what I came up with...

I had originally placed a bow with a skull tie in the mane of the one chewing on the bone. I figured that was the female and she needed something that made her feel pretty. I was told the folks at Games Workshop might not think it was very funny and I was asked to remove it from the drawing before it was submitted to them for approval. The only feedback I received on the original drawing was to make all the spikes and skull medallions 50% bigger... an easy fix to say the least. Here is the finalized approved drawing for these two lovely mutants...

This was the very first Warhammer 40K project that I worked on. The 40K universe has many fans and has a huge detailed back story. In the end I had a lot of fun with this assignment and had a blast designing something new for the 40K universe. This project also allowed me to do some black and white work again, which I had not done in some time. I have more 40K work on it's way, and I look forward to sharing it with you.

For the record, this pair of hyena alligators do have names, but I can't tell you... it's a SECRET! If you ever meet me in person maybe I will tell you...

That is all for a very mutated Wednesday, see you back here on Friday to wrap up the week! Until then...
