Campaign Roundup - Sideriadis and Bielaczyc

Today on the blog, I wanted to point out several artist campaigns that I think you all might be interested in. It features fantastic art and more by incredible artists, and if you have not already checked them out, you should do so NOW!

First, we have Jon Sideriadis's Astromythos. Jon shares:

Astromythos blends powerful storytelling, original worldbuilding, and stunning artwork to create a universe where stars, planets, and cosmic forces become legendary characters like warriors, queens, wizards, and kings.   It is the story of how stars were created, and how they fight to save their kind from destructive forces looking to devour all light in the cosmos. In this originaool astral fanto, the stars are portrayed with humanoid qualities. It is filled with allegorical characters like Brown Dwarfs, Red Giants, Magnetars, Pulsars, Comets, and Shepherd Moons, among many other living stars and heavenly bodies. They live on nebula landscapes, where they've built castles, towers, and great medieval dwellings. Astromythos shines with its stunning visuals, original mythology, and story. Books One and Two each contain 200 pages and over 100 illustrations.

In Book Two, men wage war with the stars, with those who give them warmth and light. The cosmos fears and hates mankind, but men were corrupted against their will. Men do the bidding of black holes, of evil spider-stars called Photovores. The Photovores and their allies continue to slay good stars, like our sun, to extinguish all light in the cosmos. And so the living stars fight back, but only the mightiest heroes can help them. Throughout the cosmos, Stars are still vanishing from the sky. The King of black holes, Photovóros, is consuming them, as are his evil offspring, the "Photovores." They strive to persuade other beings, like humans, to steal and enslave Stars. Persuaded so, the king of humankind and his Spider Lords corrupted the world of Zós, the Earth-like world of this series. Their armies murdered Stars and enslaved other Planets to expand their territory in the system, the galaxy, and eventually the universe. But all the while, their own Star is dying, the Star of their solar system, the ancient warrior Thárocles from Astromythos Book One. Thárocles’s only hope is to wait eagerly for a band of heroes to save him and his planet Zós.

I have known Jon and loved his work for a while now, and I can not wait to see this new installment in the series! So let's pitch in and make this a reality!

Next, we have Michael Bielaczyc's SagaBorn D100 Starter Kit Print Book. Michael shares:

The SagaBorn D100 Starter Kit is a guide to help begin telling adventures in the world of the Dark Return using the streamlined SagaBorn D100 system.  This kit gives the StoryGuide (gamemaster) and players everything they need to start their first adventure.

What’s inside?
- Getting started – a quick overview of Sagaborn D100
- The World – explore the major themes of the Dark Return setting.
- System Overview – a condensed look at the rules for making and playing a character.
- Characters – 7 pregen characters for players to choose from.
- Adventure – the heroes find themselves prisoners of the Uthgard Empire, but an escape is planned.
- StoryGuide’s Codex – rules and advice on running a SagaBorn D100 game.

What is SagaBorn D100?
SagaBorn D100 is a tabletop roleplaying game of dark fantasy, adventure, and discovery. Built on Chaosium’s BRP system, it uses a streamlined percentile skill mechanic – roll under your skill to succeed. Every sword swing, whispered spell, or desperate gamble is decided by the dice.

The system is built in the world of the Dark Return, created by artist Michael Bielaczyc and author Dane Clark Collins. A long-time passion project, the game has begun to thrive under the D100 banner.

What is the Dark Return?
The Dark Return is an Against the Dark fantasy RPG setting set in the lands of Uteria. It is a world that is crumbling because of the old power systems and new supernatural threats. It is a place where those who rise up to fight for a better world are heroes, facing the darkness with hope.

What is “Against the Dark?”
I was trying to come up with a quick description for the style of world that Uteria is. It is not grimdark, it is not gothic. It also doesn’t fit well with some new themes like hopepunk. So I came up with Against the Dark. The world has troubles. The people in power are greedy and have no empathy. There are factions of people who do evil things. And the characters are heroes who are fighting back against this darkness. Grimdark has no hope. Against the Dark is when the world may be dark, but the heroes are going to change it. It is a game setting of heroic resistance against dark supernatural forces and oppressive mundane systems.

Why Kickstart this if there is already a finished PDF?
Putting out a print book always entails more cost, and this is a way to see if there is demand for the product before those costs incur.

SagaBorn D100 is Powered by the Basic Roleplaying Universal Game Engine

Michael has been doing cool work with a lot of heart for years, and he is a really good guy. I am looking forward to this one! I hope you take the time to check out the campaign!

That's all for another exciting week on the blog. See you back here next week! Until then...

Building a Monster - The Saga: October 2022

The most excellent Michael Bielaczyc continues his Sagaborn (and other old-school RPGs) zine and has included me in his monster-packed October issue. And to make it even cooler, the zine is FREE! As I have already mentioned, it is a monster-focused issue, and Mike and I share the process of us collaborating on creating a new monster. This was a fun article to work on, and I think the way it is presented shows the organic way we work to create something. Speaking of, here is the finished monster created for the issue, the mighty Thm’thc’kr (Thim’thick’kur), or is it the Stelagfright or even the Stelagbite, or it could even be the Braun’flarrik, or maybe the Staggering Rock Mite.

The Thm’thc’kr / Stelagfright / Stelagbite / Braun’flarrik / Staggering Rock Mite

Did I mention that I am on the cover too? My interpretation of the Maya rain diety, Chaac, is the lucky monster on the October cover. I have always liked this piece, and it is great to see it getting some love.

While I will leave the process and discussion of how we went about making this particular monster, I wanted to share the visual steps that I created for this article, which just so happen to be the exact steps I take for all client and personal work that I make. If you have visited the blog before, you are likely familiar with these steps. First off, the thumbnails.

Following the thumbnails, I created the line art for the selected thumbnail.

And with the line art completed, I proceeded to render the final piece.

And with that, we have a new monster. There is a bit more to it than these images, but you will need to get the completely FREE October issue of The Saga to learn all about it. And there is a ton more in the issue than making this monster!

That's all for another exciting Monday on the blog. See you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

The Saga - April 2022 - Interview

The most excellent Michael Bielaczyc has begun "a zine for the Sagaborn Roleplaying System and other old school RPGs." The second issue, April 2022, is now out and is FREE! The issue focuses on strongholds in the fantasy game setting. In addition to all this great content, I am interviewed about my work, especially The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia.

Michael is a great human, artist, and game designer. I have known him for years and jumped at the opportunity to be a part of his new zine endeavor. I have been fortunate enough to contribute art to the Sageborn games, and it is great to see them grow and expand. If you haven't checked them out already, you should give them a look. I will leave you with a look at the first page of the interview. You can head over to DriveThru RPG to get the entire issue for FREE.

The Grand Bazaar interview for all your Grand Bazaar interview needs!

That's all for another exciting week on the blog. See you back here on Monday! Until then...

Aradani Studio's PPE Decorative Armor

Last year I shared with you a Kickstarter by the good folks over at Aradani Studio. The campaign focused on the creation of two designs of decorative PPE mask covers. The campaign was funded, and in the fullness of time, I received my unpainted High Elf Warrior mask, and I couldn't be more excited by the quality and look of this fantastic piece of art. I painted mine up and got it ready for use. It has been a little while since I painted on a 3D object, and it was enjoyable to flex those art muscles again. Here is a look at the finished paint job on the PPE armor.

Since I have a big head, I got a large model, which fits like a dream. It perfectly fits over the appropriate facial PPE and allows a little of the inner monster out while staying safe in the time of global pandemics. I could not be happier with this, and painting it was a joy. Here is a monster wearing a monster mask.

RAWR!

That's all for another exciting Monday on the blog. See you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

AradaniCon - A FREE Online Convention Starts TODAY!

In a few hours from when I am typing this, the FREE online convention, AradaniCon, will begin. Events run through midnight tonight (central time) and will start again tomorrow at noon and will continue till...? with the late-night digital dance party. All of the details are below! I will be taking part in an artist hangout tonight and an artist panel discussion tomorrow. Hope to see you there!

Discord (the Convention Lobby for us)

AradaniCon is a FREE online convention that started in 2020. We all know why we have to have it online, but why do it?

• Social interaction. Conventions are being canceled, and we need a way to connect with each other.

• Helping artists. Artists and makers are having a rough time during this time, and we all need to band together and help out!

• Helping fandom. Patrons of conventions and festivals are having a rough time missing out on their social interactions at these events. This is a way for us to all come together.

Where do we start?

The main “Lobby” for the convention will be the Aradani Discord channel. We will be posting the schedule there, as well as just having a general chat. We can also subdivide if the lobby gets too crowded.

What will be at AradaniCon?

• Panels: We will have a full schedule of panels, hosted by the best in the industry. These will last from 1 to 2 hours, with extended discussions in Discord. Panels will be streaming on Youtube and/or Twitch.
Dealer’s Hall: Our panelists will be selling their wares online, and some with discounts!
Gaming: We hope to have a full schedule of gaming online, but at minimum, Mike will host a SagaBorn game or two that weekend!
Costume Masquerade: We will have a panel or webpage showcasing costumes, with awards given!
Late Night Digital Dance Party: That’s right, we can still enjoy music and dancing like no one's watching.
I hope to see you there!

That's all for another exciting week on the blog, see you back here on Monday! Until then...

Return of the Monsters - SagaBorn Creature Compendium

Over this past weekend, I cleaned up my studio now that I am at a stopping point in the production of the book. I shoveled out a lot of detritus and also found some noteworthy items. One of these items is the SagaBorn Creature Compendium. I got my copy from the most excellent Michael Bielaczyc at the end of Gen Con a few months ago. This features reprints of all the monsters I created for him over the years as well as many new monsters by several artists. It is an excellent collection of creatures and monsters for use in SagaBorn (which is also super cool, and you should really check it out!). I have shared all of these monsters here on the blog before, but it is nice to see them all again in one place. Some of these I still love, and they were really fun to work on. I hope to have the time in the future to make some more monsters for Mike.

SagaBorn Core Rulebook

Last April I shared with you a piece that I did for the SagaBorn Core Rulebook, the wily Homunculus. While at Pensacon a couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of seeing Michael Bielaczyc, creator of SagaBorn and all around great guy, and he gave me my copy of the book. With everything going on I forgot that I had yet to get my copy, so it was a welcomed surprise! Before we go any further, here is how the final Homunculus turned out...

I can not say enough good things about Michael and his work. I have been seeing a lot of excitement about SagaBorn and it is great to be a part of this project any way that I can. If you enjoy a solid RPG made by people who love gaming, then you should really check out SagaBorn. More content is coming so you can expect many more great additions to the SagaBorn universe in the near future. Here is the great cover for the Core Rulebook, which is where you can find my Homunculus...

I am always excited by folks creating their own worlds and making their own projects. This is one of the reasons I try to help Michael out as much as my schedule allows. ...that and he is a super great guy! Again, if you want to try out a great RPG and help support people making things they care about and love then you need to go check out the SagaBorn Core Rulebook! Finally, here is a image of the Homunculus from the book getting the royal treatment as it takes up a half of page...

Homunculus - Sagaborn

Back in February I posted about the Sagaborn Kickstarter that I was a part of. Jump ahead to April and the Kickstarter was successfully funded, if you missed the Kickstarter you can still get a copy through PledgeManager, and I can share with you my contribution to the book! I present to you my contribution to the Sageborn Core Book, the wily Homunculus...

This one was a lot of fun and several firsts for me. Michael Bielaczyc always give me great assignments and he gives me almost full reign to do whatever I would like. A win/win! In the blast I have usually created black and white drawings on toned paper for Michael, but this time around I wanted to do something a little different. I have never created a traditional inked piece for a client, I have never worked wet on unmounted paper, and I have never worked in washes, brush, and pen on a black and white illustration. That is a lot of nevers and I did them all in this piece. Funny to think after all these years of doing this stuff that there are still things I have never done. This was the first time I ever taped down my paper to maintain clean edges and to maintain a smooth page while I worked wet. I know so many artist that work that way all the time... I never have. As an added bonus, here is the drawing that I created for this piece...

I will share more about this piece in the coming months when I share the process for it. Since this was the first time working like this there was a bit of trial and error as I figured things out. More about all that another day.

If you are interested in owning your own copy of Sagaborn be sure to head over to PledgeManager and take advantage of the post Kickstarter deals!
