J'AK'uhnile Portrait - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

I am thrilled to share another new piece from The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia. This illustration is for Book Two: The Completed Circle. This will be a character portrait accompanying one of the short blurbs at the beginning of a chapter. I shared more about these with the first post focused on these portraits. With most of these, I have an idea regarding their voice and placement in the book, but the fun part is that it is not set in stone and may turn into something very different from what I first planned. This time around, we have an odd being unlike many others in the Grand Bazaar. They are almost ignored as they stroll about. I present you with a J'AK'uhnile (name to come later).

These are the smallest pieces created for the books. There is something charming about a 5 x 5 image, and I have already framed them up. They look great in a frame and will make an excellent addition to my conventions this year (if you attended Gen Con, then you already may have seen these in person - the next stop will be IX in October). I have begun work on the next batch of these little monster portraits. Here is a look at the sketch for the J'AK'uhnile to show where it started. Once I have shared all of this first batch, you might notice some Easter eggs in the backgrounds.

See you at CosmicCon TOMORROW!

I am pleased to be presenting at CosmicCon tomorrow. I did their event virtually in 2021, and I am thrilled to be appearing in person this time around. I will be talking about my career, working on monsters, and taking questions from the audience. If you can make it to the main branch of the Leon County Library, I will see you from

See you from 1:30 - 2:30 at the main CosmicCon!

There is a lot more planned than just me yammering about monsters, and if you can't make it to the main branch of the library, all of the other branches have events planned as well. I hope to see you there!

Fun for one and all!

That is all for another exciting week on the blog. See you back here on Monday! Until then...

Have Trailer Will Travel!

As you may know, if you follow this blog at all, in 2019, I started using a trailer as part of my convention setup. With the walls, curtains, podium, shelves, racks, art, and just all of it, I was no longer able to fit my convention, two humans, and luggage into my car. This meant that I needed a trailer. I turned to U-Haul as a solution because of their availability and low cost (comparatively to things like buying and/or storing a trailer). Jump ahead to 2023, and I am now completely reliant on using a trailer for conventions. As I have become increasingly dependent on needing a trailer, the customer service at U-Haul has collapsed. To call the service I have recently received abysmal would be putting it mildly. I am not here to air my full grievances, but let us just say that after getting the trailer picked up for Gen Con earlier this month, a process that was maddeningly horrible, I was resigned to purchasing a trailer. And while driving to Gen Con, my wife reached out to some people to pick their brains, and one of them had just decided to sell the trailer they no longer needed. So, we now have a trailer! BEHOLD!

And it came with R2D2 decals!

It is the perfect size for our needs. It fits in one of the only places we have available for it. We are no longer beholden to U-Haul and their catastrophic service. And it has new wheels and bearings. Of course, we must not overlook the stylish R2 decals on three sides. To say I am pleased with this is putting it mildly, and I can't wait till I put it to the test.

That is all for another exciting Thursday on the blog. See you back here on Friday! Until then...

Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants - Storm Crab - Dungeons & Dragons

The newest Dungeons & Dragons supplement, Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants, was released last week, and I was lucky enough to have contributed three pieces (soon to be four, but that is another conversation for another day) to the book. The three pieces I initially did for the book required me to design and illustrate new monsters, and as you might know, it is one of my favorite things to do. Lastly is the mighty Storm Crab - a massive dragon turtle eating crab beast. YUM! Here is the final painting for the Storm Crab.

As with all my D&D pieces, even though the final is digital, there are original drawings available. These are no exception, and I was pleased with how the drawings from this book turned out. Here is the drawing for the Storm Crab

Lastly, Here is a bad photo of the monster from the book. I took this photo at Gen Con. They printed great, and I couldn't be happier with them.

The three pieces I initially did for the book required me to design and illustrate new monsters, and as you might know, it is one of my favorite things to do. I will share these one at a time over the next three days. Next up is the mighty Runic Colossus - a massive statue covered in giant runes and shoots energy out of its hand. This might be my favorite of the first pieces. Here is the final painting for the Runic Colossus.

Carrion Stalker 2D Miniature

Today I have another recently released 2D miniature based on one of my Dungeons & Dragons paintings. As with the others, this is a monster that already received a 3D mini, so now we have more minis, and that is a truly wonderful thing. This time around, it is the Carrion Stalker that I designed and illustrated for Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. Here is how the final illustration for Carrion Stalker turned out.

The 2D minis are very high quality, and the printing is excellent. There are bases for all miniatures, which are arranged by size. Here is the 2D version of the Carrion Stalker.

I assume that the Carrion Stalker 2D mini has been flipped horizontally from the 3D version, but it is hard to tell from its size. Here is the 3D mini for the Carrion Stalker.

"Recent" Magic the Gathering Artist Proof Drawings

Today I have "recent" Magic the Gathering artist proofs that I added a drawing to their backs. All available artist proofs and drawing options can be found on my store. These are from March and April, respectively, and are part of a larger token commission that I am doing for one of my favorite collectors. They need a lot of Warrior tokens, and they all are Star Wars themed. Hard to not be thrilled to be creating so many fun Star Wars portraits. I present a selection of Star Wars token drawings on the back of Magic the Gathering cards.

While nothing came of that design, I always liked it and thought it would be fun to now have an updated version as part of the Grand Bazaar. I present you with a Hurr'rtte (name to come later).

Gen Con 2023 Recap

There and back again. We have returned home from Gen Con 2023, and I am still collecting my thoughts from the past week. As impressive as last year was, in the end, it was a very hard Gen Con for me. We broke all records last year, but the work, stress, and physical toll were extreme. I was finally returning to take my place as a featured artist, having lost the opportunity in 2020. I was debuting my first book finally at Gen Con. And I was relaunching myself at the con with 100% new work. So, in the end, it was an amazing year in 2022, but it was so, so very hard and left me with a less-than-pleasant taste in my mouth. But please understand, this is not a comment on anyone else; you were all amazing; this was me and me alone.

Then we jump ahead to 2023. I did very little planning and prep work. I made some new signage and got some old sketchbooks that I wanted to clear out, and that was about it. I spent part of 2020 and most of 2021 prepping and planning for Gen Con 2022, and all that work paid off and was done. So after so much stress last year, I was rewarded with having to do very little prepping or planning. I also had a much better idea of the number of books to bring so that I was not returning with dozens of boxes.

In the end, 2023 was an amazing success. We beat last year's record total by several hundred dollars. I sold out of all the available copies of one of my prints (a first from the Grand Bazaar). I nearly sold out of all the coloring books I brought. And I sold several originals. One of the main problems I have at conventions is sleep. I have trouble turning off the con brain while there, so I end up laying awake, and then after a couple hours of sleep, I wake up super early with no way of falling back to sleep. Last year was the worst of this, with me only getting about 2 hours of sleep Friday night. We have been trying out options to address this, and I am thrilled to say that I was very well-rested and felt great the entire show. A first! It was a true joy to share the Grand Bazaar with so many people again. Gen Con saw over 70,000 people this year. While Thursday was a massive day for me last year, this year, it was Saturday and marked my best single say at a convention. Sunday ended up as a relatively slow day, but with an amazing Saturday and a good and average Thursday and Friday, it led to record sales. I had a lot of people asking about the status of book two, and some even expected me to have it completed, but things are very much still in motion as I have crossed the 1/3 mark on the art for the book. Many people told me how they or their DM have begun using my monsters in their games, and it is a joy to hear about. Lastly, we tried something a little different and drove from Gen Con back home in one day. I knew it was doable, but not sure how hard it would be. It took two hours longer than it should have because the interstate was wholly closed in the middle of Kentucky, but I was rested, and we made the drive.

So, all in all, a really great show. Thanks to all that made this possible. I will aim to return next year with new art and whatever other surprises I can come up with! For now, here are some images from my time at Gen Con.

I lucked out and got the "piller booth" this year that comes with some extra room and I made the most of it. It was like getting a second go at being a featured artist with less stress and a lot more fun.

But before the booth looks great, it looks like a pile of boxes on the floor. Having better numbers of what to bring was a MASSIVE relief for us this year. Instead of bringing 55 boxes of books and returning with 30+, we arrived with about 12 boxes and returned home with 4 boxes.

After 3.5 hours of work, the booth is all setup and ready to go!

I do not believe we have stayed as high as we did this year in the Westin. The fourteenth floor had a great view of Gen Con - even with the water spots.

The teaming throng! This is about an hour or so before the start of Thursday at Gen Con.

I did one artist proof drawing at the show. It is a carton of monster eggs on the back of a monster egg tokin.

This gentleman and his feline friend won Gen Con for me and made me miss my Mietze.

I assume the car is always there, and that they just add the dragon for Gen Con.

This year's balloon sculpture was OUT OF THIS WORLD!

When I say that the Gen Con art show was packed, it was PACKED.
I have never in my ten-plus years of being in the Gen Con arts how anything like this year's Saturday.

I mentioned clearing out sketchbooks above. Well, they are all gone now.

I did one drawing in a person's convention book. I did a piece for them several years ago, and it was fun to put another in the book.

And as far as originals sold...

The start of Sunday and the final day of Gen Con.

And just like that... the convention is over. The booth is down. And I was once again left out of the group picture of everyone in the art show.

I was told they had lost the art show banner and that it was remade in a couple of days leading up to the show. I had never seen it on the ground and it is massive.

Again, thanks to everyone, it was a truly great years. That is all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog. See you back here on Friday! Until then...
