Phaerimm Miniature

Today, I have for you a miniature based on one of my illustrations. I updated the Phaerimm for the release of Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun. When I painted this piece, I hoped that there would be a miniature eventually made of it, and all I needed to do was be a little patient. To start things off, here is my illustration of the Phaerimm.

Here are some images of the miniature so that you can compare them to the painting. I love that they did a fairly good job of getting all the creepy hand positions in there. I think it turned out really well!

Gorgon Miniature

Today, I have for you a miniature based on one of my designs. I updated the Gorgon for the release of 5E. This is acutally the second release of a miniature for this design. An unpaintned version was released in 2021. This one is always a funny monster to me and is not the only time I have working on the Gorgon. To start things off, here is my design of the Gorgon.

Phaerimm - Dungeons & Dragons - Process

Today, I am happy to share the process and steps for my contribution to the Dungeons & Dragons supplement, Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun. As mentioned previously, while I created three pieces for this project, sections of the book were removed during production, which left only one of my illustrations included. While I was aware of the Phaerimm, I had never done anything with this particular monster before, so it was fun to get to working on something new. Here is a look at my final illustration for the Phaerimm.

You might notice that this monster has a background. This was one of the new requirements for the monster vignettes, as they have backgrounds now. No more isolated figures now. The Phaerimm is a strange plant monster horror thing. I am good with that, so no complaints. I got to work on some thumbnails for this one.

The thumbnails were well received, and the second one was chosen. With a selected thumbnail, I got to work on the drawing for this one. When the linework was finished, and before I completed the rendering, I scanned the image to use the line art in the painting process.

The drawing was approved without notes, and it was time to work on the painting. As mentioned above, these now have backgrounds. This also means that the creature and the background need to be on different layers so effects and vignetting can be done by production. For me, this means painting the background first and painting out the monster to some degree so that there is plenty to work with and no layering issues. I then go back in and work on the monster on its own layer set. This part I am very familiar with. There are other things I can say about this one, but that should wait till later when other pieces are eventually released.

Here again is how the final painting turned out, as well as a look at the piece in the book. You can see in that image how having the background as a separate layer works with the layout. On the page, the monster now breaks the borders of the image.

Star Spawn Seer Miniature

Today, I have for you a miniature based on one of my illustrations. I updated and painted the Star Spawn Seer for Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse. I have been biding my time for this one. Not sure why I figured it would eventually become a miniature, but I have expected one to be made since I painted this one. We can add this to the growing number of miniatures based on my work, where I used myself as the reference. To start things off, here is my painting of the Star Spawn Seer.

This one looks great and is nice and awkward and gross. You can't go wrong with that. I always find it interesting to see what had to be changed and what comes directly from my painting. Here are a pair of images of the miniature so that you can compare them to the illustration.

Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun - Dungeons & Dragons

The newest Dungeons & Dragons supplement, Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun, was recently released, and I can finally share my work on this book... sort of. I was lucky enough to have produced three pieces for the book. But, due to events outside my control, sections of the book were removed during production, and with the sections so went two of my pieces. That means that I can only share one piece with you today. Hopefully, in the future, those pieces will find a home and I will be able to share them. Of my pieces, the Phaerimm was the lucky one to make the book. While it was not an entirely new monster for me, I was aware of its existence, but I had never worked with or played with one before. So that was a treat for sure. Before sharing the final paintings for the Phaerimm, let's have a look at the book you can find it in.

Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun

For those unfamiliar with the Phaerimm, it is an abomination that looks like a flying sunflower cornucopia with arms and a needle-toothed maw at its center. You know, the type of thing one would find in the Forgotten Realms. Here is my final painting for the Phaerimm, as well as the preliminary drawing.

Lastly, here is the monster in the book for all to see. An interesting side note, backgrounds are now included with the monsters I have been creating lately. So there is more context to the monster, and it isn't simply sitting in a white void on the page. This meant that I needed to supply the creature, separated from the background. Make of it what you will, it was a new aspect to the process that I will elaborate on when I share the entire production process.

That is all for another exciting Monday on the blog. See you back here on Wednesday! Until then...

Welcome to the Hellfire Club - Dungeons & Dragons

I am thrilled to finally share my work on the newly released Dungeons & Dragons set, Welcome to the Hellfire Club. This is the newest set that mixes classic D&D with the Netflix series Stranger Things. This was a pure joy to work on, not because of it being Stranger Things or even Dungeons & Dragons. It was a joy because I got to work fully traditionally on these pieces. The finals are ink on paper, and they were so much fun to work on. This is the first time working on this type of project, so while there are traditional drawings for these and thumbnail variations, I am still navigating what I can and cannot share. So I will be playing it safe and only sharing the final pieces for now. If you come to IX next week, you will be the first to see all of this work, both the finals and drawings, in person at the show. They will be available for purchase there for the first time as well. As I am also not sure what I can share, I will share with you the art for now, and the stories will wait for another day.

A NEW Spectator Miniature

I have a recently released miniature based on my designs that has already been turned into a miniature. This time around, the miniature getting an update in the Spectator. I redesigned the Spectator during my work leading up to the release of 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons. To start things off, here is my design of the Spectator.

The first Spectator miniature was released in 2015, with a second 2D acrylic mini released in 2023, and finally, the most recent version last year in 2024. While the miniatures have varied, they have continued to stay true to the original design. Now, the most recent purple and it looks GREAT! Here is a look at the new mini.

A NEW Gazer Miniature

I have a recently released miniature based on my designs and illustrations that has already been turned into a miniature. This time around, the miniature getting an update in the Gazer. The first Gazer miniature was released in 2019, with a second 2D acrylic mini released in 2023. The original was so tiny, and the second was more visually faithful to the design. This most recent version is a perfect combination of the two previous miniatures, merging diminutive size and detail. Here is a look at the new mini.

A NEW Fire Snake Miniature

I have a recently released miniature based on my designs and illustrations that has already been turned into a miniature. This time around, the miniature getting an update in the Fire Snake. I redesigned and illustrated the Fire Snake for its Monster Manual appearance for the launch of 5th Edition. To start things off, here is my illustration of the Fire Snake.

It has been ten years since there was a Fire Snake miniature released, and I never imagined that it would get another version, let alone one that matches my original painting, in addition to being a vast improvement to the overall quality of the piece. The Fire Snake is a juvenile Salamander (which I also designed and illustrated), and I had a ton of fun working on its design and painting, so it is so cool to see it return. Here is a look at the new mini.

Twenty Years Later - Two Decades of Making Monsters for Wizards of the Coast

Twenty years ago yesterday, I received my first assignment to work with Wizards of the Coast (WotC) to design monsters for a new miniature game they were developing. I had met the art director a year earlier at San Diego Comic Con and had a great portfolio review. I kept in touch over that year as my life completely changed. We would leave LA for a fresh start back in Florida with a better job and 99% less abuse and harassment in the workplace. In June of 2005, when the email arrived inquiring about my availability I jumped at it and tried not to look back.

While the miniature game, Dreamblade, only lasted a few years, twenty years later, I am still making monsters for WotC. Not as many as I once did, but WotC is now my only client in the gaming industry that I still take work from. I never expected this to last twenty years, and I certainly didn't expect the journey that I have had with them. But I guess I am still doing something right if they want me to make monsters for them.

Over the years, there have been some really amazing highs and some lows (in some ways, I likely learned a heck of a lot more from the lows than the highs). I have always focused on monsters, but I have designed monsters, armor, miniatures, and more. I have illustrated cards, magazines, books, and covers. Most of my work has been on Dungeons & Dragons, but my work can be seen in Dreamblade, Kaijudo, several projects I can't talk about, and, of course, Magic the Gathering. Overall, they have been the best client to work with, and I have met a lot of really amazing people because of our working relationship.

I have worked with some of the best art directors in the business, and through them, I have learned a great deal about being objective with my work and understanding that revisions are all part of the process. I know I will forget some people, but working with Kate, Jon, Dawn, Emi, Stacy, Jeremy, Peter, Cynthia, Taylor, Forrest, Zack, and plenty more has been truly wonderful. I have seen people come, and I have had to see them leave. Every assignment has been an adventure, and you never know what is going to arrive in the assignment email. Sometimes it would be a little scary, but most of the time it was the start of an exciting project.

I have some really exciting work waiting to be released. Work I have waited twenty years to make. I can't say more, but hopefully later this year, or early next year, I will be sharing it with you here. This coming work is in many ways a full circle moment for me and a wonderful way to acknowledge two decades of making game art. i do hope to find a way to make more art like this in the future.

About ten years ago, I started hearing from people that they had enjoyed my work since childhood. It always made me feel weird, because that just didn't seem possible. But there is no escaping that reality now. I now have fans who are younger than my career. I do not know what is next with me and WotC, but I will keep making monsters for them as long as they will let me and as long as it fits into my schedule. The Grand Bazaar has priority now, but I always find it hard to tell WotC no. So, a MASSIVE thanks to all my art directors and fans for being a part of this adventure! It has been a crazy ride.
