Fish Frog Scribbles & OVER 1100!

Times flies when you are having fun... or working a LOT. Tomorrow is a food and family holiday in America so I have a low key post today. Usually today would be a post focusing on the process of a past painting, but I have a full plate and like I said, tomorrow is a holiday.

First point of interest is that last Friday's post of the blog was my 1100th post of this blog. Some might think that is cool, others may not care. I think it is pretty neat. Slowly but surely the number ticks higher and higher as the blog continues on and on. RAWR!

Not to leave you without a monster on the blog today here is a little something that came to life between all the other things that have been going on. There was a VERY small slice of time between my RAWR! show at 621 Gallery going up and before an assignment came in that allowed me to have some fun with a pencil. With all my assignments and projects I have had to create specific work for lately, I have not been able to just have some 'me' time with my art. To that end here is a little Fish Frog that happened in the brief down time I had lately...

A funny thing happen on the way to the ...SMASH!!!

You may have noticed that I have not posted on the blog since last Wednesday and that I have not been active online anywhere else... or maybe my absence has gone unnoticed...

Either way, it is a funny story. When I say "funny" I mean the students of Tallahassee have finally successfully murdered my car. They have been trying for years and nearly succeeded about 6 years back. Unfortunately, after countless attempts one of their best assassins managed to get past my defenses. Got past so easily that I never saw them coming until their car was in my passenger seat...

This is one time that the pictures do not do it justice, it looks MUCH worse in person. Where was I when all this happened? In a parking lot! He built up his RAMMING SPEED in a parking lot and caved in the right side of my car... from wheel to wheel... there is damaged.

IN. A. PARKING. LOT. 

Trying to stay positive...

1) At least I did not have a passenger with me at the time...
2) I seem to have managed to remain unharmed...
3) He was found at fault...
4) I found a lovely mugshot of the guy online when he was busted for Marijuana possession last year. 

Not so positive... my car is dead, totaled, and gone... and now I have no car. The student has stolen from me and I was only marginally compensated. Did I mention he was driving a rental car? A rental car that he took ownership of after claiming his insurance covers rentals. ...when in fact it may not cover rentals... yeah...

I can see the insides on my car from the outside.

With all that has happened and the fact that the Thanksgiving holiday is tomorrow I am going to take a break from the blog for the rest of the week and try to pick back up on my normal posting schedule on Monday, December 2nd. In the meantime... here is a happy frog in our pond, he does not care about cars and stupid distracted speeding students...

Toned Frog Turtle

The toned monsters have begun to appear in greater numbers. Kind of... You might remember the wily Airport Frog Turtle that I worked on while traveling to the Illustration Master Class. The Frog Turtle was the first of my monsters that I tried out taking to a more finished state on toned paper and here is how it turned out...

When I compare the original and the toned version it is funny how much more finished the toned version feels to me. The original was a totally finished drawing for me at the time, not anything I would do differently or add/subtract. It is a finished drawing. Now I do the toned version... and my feelings change a bit. Not in a bad way, I am just getting a better feeling for my drawings and what I can do with them.

When I decided I was going to start up these toned drawings the Frog Turtle (or Frotle... or Turg?) was the first and clear choice. I really liked how it turned out and it just seemed 'right' for the first test run. I think I chose correctly! RAWR!

For those attending Gen Con you will have a chance to see the Frog Turtle in person and even buy him and take him home with you! Give the Frog Turtle a good home!

Bullfrog Reference

I found one of our very large bullfrogs floating in the pond last week very much dead. It was a real beautiful specimen and I hated to see it had passed, but I thought I better document it to make the best of its life and death. I have for you today a selection of the best photos from my impromptu photo shot with the frog. Since it was floating when it died and had been there a little bit the body had stiffened up and remained in the very life like stance you see in the photos. I hope you will find the images as helpful in your work as I know they will be in mine (especially those awesome feet)! ENJOY!
