Pusbubble - Blood Bowl: Fowl Play - PROCESS

Finishing off a week of traditional painting posts on the blog today with the process that went into Pusbubble! You might remember Pusbubble from back in June when I first shared him with you. Pusbubble is from the Foul Play expansion for Blood Bowl and was my first traditionally painted piece for Fantasy Flight Games. Here is a look at the final before we get into the process...

Pusbubble was described as a very small, very excited Nurgling that wore homemade gear and armor and just wanted to be part of the game. Oh, and he needed to be dripping with goo and filth, killing everything around it. I started things off with some thumbnails as I got my head around this cute little guy...

Option 'C' was the winner. Looking back now, it seems like a no brainer, but at the time, I was really up in the air on which was my preferred thumbnail. There may have been some mention in the assignment about the ball being a little too big to carry, or Pusbubble was having trouble lifting it I think 'C' better conveys that. Now that I had a thumbnail, it was time to work up the final drawing...

The drawing was approved without comment. You might notice that the aspect ratio changed from the thumbnail to the drawing. I wanted to paint on a standard sized board, so I extended the background horizontally to allow me to work on an 8 x 10 surface. With that squared away, it was time to paint. Here some images of the piece coming together...

I was (am) still figuring out this traditional painting stuff. In Pusbubble, especially, there was a lot of experimentation and just trying things out to see if it would work. I was also trying some new media and different types of combinations of media. Some of the experiments have led to processes I continue today while others have been abandoned. Still very much learning and figuring this all out on this piece. Here is a little animated process progression thing that better shows the piece coming together...

Pusbubble was the first of what has lead to many more, but more on that later. Here again, is the final painting and the corresponding card that this piece was created for...

Pusbibble - Blood Bowl: Fowl Play

My contribution to the upcoming expansion to Blood Bowl: Team Manager, Fowl Play, was spoiled on the Fantasy Flight Games website yesterday. What that really means is that I can now share it here! What makes this piece even more special... to me, at least... is that this is my first traditionally painted piece for FFG. I present to you the newest star player for the Nurgle’s Rotters, Pusbubble...

I was tasked to create this little Nurgling that was super eager to play, though he might not be as big and powerful as his horrific plague-carrying brethren. I was approached about this assignment while driving home from Gen Con last year. At a break from driving, I checked my phone, and there was an email inquiry. At first, I was not going to take on the assignment... but then I got to thinking about doing the piece traditionally, and suddenly the assignment got a whole lot more tempting. ...well, you can see how tempting it was because I am sharing with you the finished painting.

When the expansion finally gets released, I will share with you the process and steps that went into this painting, as well as some thoughts about why I decided to do this piece traditionally.

I will leave you with an image of how the final production card is going to look...

That is all for another exciting Wednesday on the blog, see you back here on Friday! Until then...

Blood Bowl: Team Manager

Starting the week off with something new! Many moons ago, I was approached to work on a little game called Blood Bowl for the good folks at Fantasy Flight Games. I thought of orcs and goblins or even rat men... turns out I was assigned an elf. Not even a dead elf, but a hero to elf kind... Prince Moranion. Not really a monster, but I was tasked to make him look awesome, and I tried my best. Enough talk, on with the monster... er, I mean elf...

There is a little story on how this elf came to be mine, but I am not sure if that would be appropriate to mention here. All things considered, it was a fun piece to work. The silliness on the forums speculating if the game would ever come out due to production delays is another matter. Not much to say other than that, this project went REALLY smoothly for me, and it was over quickly. This was another project I got to see at Gen Con and was given permission to now show. I still have not seen the final production card, but I was told it definitely made it into the game.

That is all for today, see you back here on Wednesday! Until then...
