Rule of Law - The Return of the Gnome Blacksmith... Wait, WUT?!?!

There are a handful of third-party modules and supplements that feature reprints of some of my work, the third of which I am sharing today. I have been aware of them for a while (as most seem to have been released in 2017), but I recently tracked them all down as best I could to see what was used and if I could obtain a copy. Unfortunately, these particular products do not have physical versions or are no longer available (more on this below). That said, I investigated to see if I could get details and screenshots of my work in the various products. Today I have the third and final of these 5E supplements, Rule of Law. To start things off, here is a look at the cover.

Rule of Law. It would appear that this, like the supplement I shared last week, is not legit and was created in violation of ownership and copyright.

From what I have learned in the past week, there are individuals out there taking D&D content, grabbing art from wherever they can find it, slapping it all together, and putting the product out there as if it was theirs to do so. This is why, yet again, I have a piece I made for Paizo showing up in what looks to be a third-party D&D product. Which it is not. The Paizo piece in question was from 2010 and created for Pathfinder Companion: Gnomes of Golarion. I made several Gnome-related pieces for this book, with one of them being a blacksmith. Here is that old, old, OLD piece I did for Paizo, Gnome Blacksmith (so many things wrong with it, so many things that could have been done better).

I have no idea how the licensing works with WotC, D&D, and third-party products, but this is NOT it. As mentioned above, this was done in violation of a few copyright holders and is just not cool. My art was likely stolen from DeviantArt before I deleted my account... due to the rampant theft of art on that site. Who knew it was a feature and not a bug. Here is a look at my art on the page of this product.

Gnome Blacksmith hanging out where he does not belong.

Unlike the previous suspect product I shared, this one got my name correct. Which is at least something, I guess. This is all sad to me. Yes, making a book is hard and takes a lot of work, but it is not impossible and has been done by countless people. Go make your own thing. Stop stealing other people's work and passing it off as yours. Here is a look at the credits page - which is a little funny to me as it is all stolen, and yet they took the time to credit those they stole from.

At least they got my name correct in this one.

That is all for another exciting week on the blog. See you back here on Monday! Until then...

Codex: Unearthed Arcana - The Return of Wolfbane and Silver Arrow... Wait, WUT?!?!

There are a handful of third-party modules and supplements that feature reprints of some of my work, the second of which I am sharing today. I have been aware of them for a while (as most seem to have been released in 2017), but I recently tracked them all down as best I could to see what was used and if I could obtain a copy. Unfortunately, these particular products do not have physical versions or are no longer available. That said, I investigated to see if I could get details and screenshots of my work in the various products. Today I have the second of these 5E supplements, Codex: Unearthed Arcana. To start things off, here is a look at the cover.

Codex: Unearthed Arcana. This appears to be a collection of additional content that has been compiled. I think, but I am not really sure.

This is where it gets a little weird. As far I can tell, I have a single piece reprinted in this book, but that piece was not made for Wizards of the Coast for use in Dungeons & Dragons. The piece in question, Wolfbane and Silver Arrow, was created for Paizo Publishing for use in Pathfinder. In 2010, when I was working a lot with Paizo, this was one of three pieces I painted for Pathfinder Chronicles: Classic Horrors Revisited. Jump ahead seven years, and it is now in a third-party supplement, and jump ahead another six years, and I am now sharing it with you. Here is that old, old, OLD piece I did for Paizo, Wolfbane and Silver Arrow.

I have no idea how the licensing works with WotC, D&D, and third-party products, but it seems very odd that it would include work done for another gaming company. I have no idea how this came to be, if it was kosher, or how they got a print-ready file, but here we are and there is nothing to do about it now. Here is a look at my art on the page of this product.

Wolfbane and Silver Arrow hanging out, being ancient art, from another company.

To make things more suspect, here is an image of the credits from the supplement. I never have, and I mean NEVER, represented myself professionally with my name smashed together uncapitalized. One would think that they simply grabbed the art and my user name off something like DeviantArt and thought that would be good enough. But I don't know any details of how this art ended up here. I kind of wish I did, but as this is work for hire, I have no ownership or copyright related to this image. Here is a look at the credits page, and you will see that my name is not the only other odd entry.

So many questions and so few answers. A mystery for the ages.

That is all for another exciting week on the blog. See you back here on Monday! Until then...

Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Dungeons of Golarion

I found an unexpected surprise in the mail on Monday afternoon, my copies of the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Dungeons of Golarion! Fresh on the heals of Undead Revisited I was working on more undead Paizo Publishing, this time around horrific ghouls in an abandoned Dwarven mine! I also got another chance to put one of the Pathfinder Icons into a dangerous predicament...

You might remember the last time I had the Pathfinder iconic dwarf Hursk in one of my pieces he was doing battle with a Tojanida. It seems he just can't get a break with me... but he did survive the Tojanida. I am much happier with how Hursk turned out this time around! I also was able to paint a whole lot of ghouls and that is pretty great too! Then there is the case of the black fire... what does it look like? does it emit light? is it just freaky magic?

When I first read a art assignments and there is a mention of a group or even just more then one, for some reason my mind immediately jumps to a number between 20 and 50 for the number I should have. So when I read this assignment and it said that Hursk was surrounded by ghouls the first thing that pooped into my mind is that he is surrounded by 30 ghouls. Not really sure what that is about, but I need to stop freaking myself out unnecessarily in this fashion. ..."How am I going to paint 30 ghouls?!?!" Yeah, need to stop doing that... three is just fine.

As always, I would like to extend a huge thanks to Sarah Robinson for giving me the opportunity to work on this fun assignment!

That is all for today, see you back here on Friday for a look at a special item I will have available at Gen Con! Until then...

Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Undead Revisited

I am pleased to bring you more recently released new work on the blog today. Just like the Dungeon Magazine work posted on Wednesday this work also came out while I was at the Illustration Master Class. This time around the work was for the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Undead Revisited just released from Paizo Publishing. Not only did the assignment have monsters... well, their shadows, it also had allowed me to paint my favorite type of elf... DEAD...

This was a really fun assignment and got me out of my comfort zone a bit. Even so, it came together really fast for me and I am very happy with how it all turn out. Composition and lighting were key and I focused on them to make sure it read well and explained the situation well. Since the supporting quarter page and spot pieces were less involved I had to make sure the opener piece was really strong and carried the weight for the rest.

I will be sure to bring you the drawings and maybe even some of the reference that went into these pieces in the near future... still getting ready for Gen Con and that it really taking up a bit of time. Hopefully in the near future I will also have some more new Paizo work to share with you! More on that soon.

I would like to extend a huge thanks to Sarah Robinson for giving me the opportunity to work on this fun assignment! And for baring with my rather full schedule at the end of last year.

That is all for another exciting week on the blog, see you back here on Monday for another new piece of work! Until then...

Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Misfit Monsters Redeemed

Finally, some new work to share here on the blog! Always difficult to be patient for my comp copies to show up in the mail to confirm that everything made it into the final publication. But at long last I am happy to share my contribution to the recently released Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Misfit Monsters Redeemed. I think the name says it all, MONSTERS! So let's look at the monsters...

For this project I was assigned to redesign the Tojanida. The Tojanida has always been this crazy mixed up thing but I was able to get in there and give it some of my monster love. They wanted something along the lines of a crab with a snapping turtle beak with some flippers thrown in and I was happy to oblige. It just so happened that I had a ton of crab reference laying around from a piece I had recently finished for myself so I had a lot to draw from as I worked on these.

Needless to say I had a ton of fun working on the Tojanida redesign and these pieces. It is hard to go wrong when you get to add your own voice to a project this way. As always a big thanks to Sarah Robinson for getting me involved on this projects!

The Thanksgiving Holiday is this week and I am going to be busy with travel and family. I don't see me being able to make any blog posts until next Monday, after the holiday. See you back here in a week! Until then...

Pathfinder Chronicles: City of Strangers (part 1)

These are a long time in coming. Pathfinder Chronicles: City of Strangers was actually released in stores before Gen Con and I just got my copies last week. I am happy to finally be able to share the work I did on this release from Paizo Publishing. I produced a mix of character shots for this book, I will save the people for later in the week and just jump into the good stuff... THE MONSTERS!

I had SO much fun with that Troll. I think it is possibly one of if not the favorite piece I have produced for Paizo. A big monster AND guts... it is a win/win situation. I went a little nuts on the skin texture, but that is kind of becoming my thing these days. In all seriousness, a big thanks to Sarah Robinson for thinking of me for these pieces. I can not ask for better images to have to create!

GEEK NIGHT 2010 is coming! I will have an official post about it this week. Mark your calendars, Sept 24th 8:30 pm on the campus of Florida State University!

That is all for today. I will have some humans and some info on Geek Night for you later in the week! Until then...

Pathfinder Chronicles: Classic Treasures Revisited (part 2)

Wrapping up the work I did on the Sphere of Annihilation for Pathfinder Chronicles: Classic Treasures Revisited I have for you today some spot illustrations. If you missed the opener graphic, you can see it HERE. The three spot illustrations that I produced depict a trap, the sphere itself, and a Sphere of Annihilation rod or wand. Well... that is what I was told at least, I have yet to read the article...

Thought they might not be as explosive as a popping demon these pieces were fun to work on. I think I was having flash backs to my makeup effects days in LA when I designed the statue head. I may have made myself a mask that looked like that once, now that I look at it with fresh eyes.

That is all for today. I have a month of full days ahead of me. I will see you back here on Friday! Until then...

Pathfinder Chronicles: Classic Treasures Revisited

As promised last week here is the first part of some recent work of mine to be released by Paizo. The work posted today and on Wednesday are from the newly released Pathfinder Chronicles: Classic Treasures Revisited. I worked with Sarah Robinson on these late last year and had a BLAST on the chapter opener for the Sphere of Annihilation!

Much like with tentacles, it is hard to go wrong with exploding demons! It is a real honor to share the pages of this book with so many other talented artists. Jeremy McHugh has some real stellar work in it. I think I want to push him down and steal his opener for the Deck of Many Things. ...wait, did I say that out loud?

I will be back here on Wednesday with the rest of the work I did for this book and the Sphere of Annihilation. Until then...

Pathfinder Adventure Path #29: Mother of Flies (part 2)

I promised you these yesterday but I was bitten by a zombie on Tuesday and didn't get out of bed yesterday. I am still in bed at the moment but the pain has subsided a little bit and my head is slightly clearer. As they say, better late then never...

Today, I have for you the second and final installment of work that I produced for Pathfinder Adventure Path #29: Mother of Flies. Here are an assassin, a hag and my favorite kind of halfling, one covered in a swarm of shadow rats...

I actually my hands on a copy of this module earlier in the week at my local gaming store. I am really impressed with the production quality of all of Paizo's products. I thought my pieces also reproduced very well. As a extra bonus, Dog's Tongue, the red cap from Monday's post made it onto the back cover! I thought that was pretty cool indeed :)

Don't think I will have any more posts for you this week with how I feel. At this rate I don't see myself out of bed until Saturday. Hopefully I will back in the swing of things on Monday. Until then...
