Amreth Gaunt, Master Merchant - Dungeon #172

A late post today, I have been traveling since 6:30 this morning and finally have two seconds to myself. So of course I take those two seconds and post a piece of art I did for Dungeon Magazine! Amreth Gaunt, Master Merchant went live today for issue #172 of Dungeon and I am pleased to share with you.

I did this piece at the same time I created the piece for Barbarian Essentials. As before I was working with Jon Schindehette on this. This was a fun piece to work on for sure. I love Dragonborn and I relish any opportunity to work on them.

As I mentioned I have been traveling all day and find myself finally in Altoona, Pa for Illuxcon! I hopefully will have loads to post and share. Things really get going tomorrow evening, but some cool stuff has already happen like sharing a taxi with Jeff Easley, YES, the Jeff Easley. Hopefully there will be more of that very soon. Until then...

New Buttons - Illuxcon

As promised, here are some images of my new buttons that I will be handing out at Illuxcon in just a couple of days. This marks my second time I will be using buttons as a promotional item, the first being this past San Diego Comic Con. If you missed the buttons I made for Comic Con, you can see them HERE. The three favorites are back with two new additions, a black and white piece from Knockspell #2 and the Dragon Rage Barbarian. Be sure to ask for a button or two at Illuxcon, I will be happy to oblige!

Collect all 5! Or at least the 2 new ones you don't already have!

Nothing like a crappy photo to really sell the awesomeness that are these buttons. Trust me, they look really really good.

My friend Chris Presley was kind enough to once again make these for me and if that was not enough he made me 130 of them. In my opinion they are even better then the first batch. So don't be shy, make sure you ask for one (if you really want to) ... and don't forget to ask about my sketch cards!

I will be traveling tomorrow and should be updating my adventures via twitter. I will try to have another normal blog post tomorrow (albeit late) since I should have a new piece of work released tomorrow! For that matter I have a ton of work being released today for a game I worked on... but that will have to all wait till next week (sorry). If all goes to plan, I will be posting images and thoughts about Illuxcon over the weekend... cross those fingers! Until then...

Sketch Cards - Illuxcon

Illuxcon is almost upon us! If you missed my last post about Illuxcon, you can read all about this amazing event, HERE. I will be flying out to Altoona on Wednesday ready to get my art on starting Thursday evening. I mentioned that I will have some surprises in store for Illuxcon and I am happy to share some of them here today.

I have been working on sketch cards in my down time to share and trade with folks while at Illuxcon. They were so fun to work on were and such a smash hit at Geek Night that I though I would make some more. If you are attending Illuxcon be sure to ask for your sketch card and I will be happy to give one to you. I am thinking I might have people pick theirs at random. Going to see if I can generate a secondary market of my cards. Here is a peak at some of the cards I will be giving away:

As always, first come first serve. If you have something to trade for one even better! I hope to come away with some other artists work as well. Not going to delude myself that there are a whole lot of folks chomping at the bit to get my sketches, but I am always interested in having a piece of another artist original art.

I will also have a partially new assortment of buttons at Illuxcon to give away too! I should have the new batch in hand later today and will try to share them tomorrow. Until then...

Minotaur Lord

Somehow in my hectic schedule of late I was able to do a piece for myself. Granted I believe I started this drawing in July. The basic sketch and outline went down in July and then it sat dormant in my sketch pad. During the few days last week between projects when I was not doing the plethora of neglected tasks and a healthy diet of video games I finish up this drawing. Not much else to say, I LOVE drawing and I LOVE monsters, I should probably try to do more of both... when I am not painting monsters...

RAWR! I am the Minotaur Lord!

Illuxcon is next week! I will be doing a last post of Monday about some of the stuff I have been doing to get ready and I hopefully (cross those fingers) will be doing posts of the events like I did for Comic Con. Everybody just loves my ramblings and bad photos! ...right?

Basilisk - Talisman Frostmarch expansion

Frostmarch, the newest expansion for Talisman came out last week and I did some work for it. Well, I say some work, it was in fact one piece for this set, but I figure you have to start somewhere, right? This was the very first project I had the opportunity to work on for Fantasy Flight Games and it was a blast. When I got the assignment I almost missed the art order in the email, there was a single word in a block by itself, "Basilisk". You just can't go wrong with that. I did 3 sketches and the first one I did was picked and I got to painting and a short time later had this...

Not only was this my first project with FFG but this was also my first piece of card art. As a side note my comp copy of Frostmarch arrived in the mail on Monday and I was thrilled to see they used my piece as part of the box art as well. I have been fortunate enough to find myself on several other Fantasy Flight Games projects and look forward to sharing that work as well when I am allowed. Until then...

Genasi Armor Designs #2

Wrapping up the female Genasi armor, I bring you the leather (with and without cloak), plate and scale sets. I think overall I am most pleased with the scale set I designed, for both look and quality of painting. It still is very minimal but has a lot going on at the same time. I am always a little leery of armor that exposes a lot of the body because... well, it stops being armor at that point. The Genasi armor does expose a lot of skin but that is in following with their culture as well as it shows off their glowing patterned skin. It was some times challenging to find a happy medium, but in the end Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy game and this allows lots of room to have fun and not worry to much about reality. Enough of my yammering, lets get to some armor...

Freaks and Whispers - Dreamblade

And so we find ourselves at the end... Today I have the final two designs I did for the unreleased 7th set of Dreamblade. I present to you the Two-Faced Freak and the Whisper of Truth. The Freak was to be an uncommon Madness piece and (you guessed it!) part of the Janus lineage and the Whisper was a common and part of that thing I am not talking about that was going to be new for set 7.

This was a fun one to work on, you can never go wrong with tentacles. This was not my first Janus piece. I designed a late addition to the base set that was going to be a Janus Scout, but it was never released. I will NOT be sharing that design, I was never happy with how it turned out and I like it even less now. Looking at the Freak now I should have added more dimension to the tentacles in the side view, but I know at the time I was concerned about getting too crazy with them. This was only a uncommon and I didn't want to make as complex as a rare.

Unreleased Whisper of Truth - © 2006 Wizards of the Coast LLC
Not much to say about this one save the challenge to make sure all the appropriate areas were covered. It needed to be PG after all. She is the third and final piece I designed for the new game element they were going to introduce to set 7. Now that you have all three, the Whisper, the Executioner and the Damsel you might be able to pick out a visual clue that they all share. It might be hard in some but there is a common visual element to them all. I wonder how it would have been received and how it would have effected the game.

Well, that is it, the end of my secrets for Dreamblade that I can share. I still have art for released pieces that I have never spotlighted that I will be bringing you and I have early versions to several of these set 6 and 7 pieces that I can still share. Actually both of these have interesting first passes that I will able to share later. Until then...
