Gazer 2D Miniature

Today, I have another recently released 2D miniature based on one of my Dungeons & Dragons paintings. As with the others, this is a monster that already received a 3D mini, so now we have more minis, and that is a truly wonderful thing. This time around, it is the Gazer that I designed and illustrated for Volo's Guide to Monsters. Here is how the final illustration for the Gazer turned out.

The 2D minis are very high quality, and the printing is excellent. There are bases for all miniatures, which are arranged by size. Here is the 2D miniature of the Gazer

I mentioned that this particular monster already has a 3D miniature. As this is a tiny monster, the miniatures are always too small to get all the detail in. With the 2D printed mini, you are able to get a bit more in there, and it really reads well. I love how faithful it is to my painting, even at this size. Here is the 3D mini for the Gazer.

Yuan-Ti Broodguard 2D Miniature

Today, I have another recently released 2D miniature based on one of my Dungeons & Dragons paintings. Well, techinquely, I have two, but it is the same monster in two poses. As with the others, this is a monster that already received a 3D mini (not one, but TWO minis so far), so now we have more minis, and that is a truly wonderful thing. This time around, it is the Yuan-Ti Broodguard that I designed and illustrated for Volo's Guide to Monsters. Here is how the final illustration for Yuan-Ti Broodguard turned out.

I mentioned that this particular monsters already has two 3D miniatures. I beleive there was a size issue with the first relelase and they have since corrected this oversight with a second, larger version. Here are the 3D minis for the Yuan-Ti Broodguard.

Lizardfolk 2D Miniature

Today, I have another recently released 2D miniature based on one of my Dungeons & Dragons paintings. As with the others, this is a monster that already received a 3D mini, so now we have more minis, and that is a truly wonderful thing. This time around, it is the Lizardfolk that I designed and illustrated for Volo's Guide to Monsters. This piece means a lot to me personally, and if you want to read why, I will point you to another page on this blog. Here is how the final illustration for Lizardfolk turned out.

NEW Yuan-ti Broodguard Miniature

If you are saying to yourself there is already a Yuan-ti Broodguard miniature out there and that I shared it here on the blog, you are correct. Today I am sharing the NEW Yuan-ti Broodguard miniature that was recently released. I am sure some are wondering why we need a new Yuan-ti Broodguard miniature, and I will address that, but first, let us look back at my original Yuan-ti Broodguard painting that I created for Volo's Guide to Monsters.

BEHOLD! It is a miniature, and it looks awesome and is based on my illustration. For those wondering why there is a new version of this monster, I guess they are correcting the mistake of making the original Yuan-Ti Broodguard mini too small. The version that came out in 2017 was a tiny or small-scaled mini, and the monster is more of a medium-sized monster. Here is a look at the new and improved Yuan-Ti Broodguard miniature.

Lastly, I want to share an image of the previous miniature version. It turned out great, if not a little small. This original version did have its tongue out like my painting, but no tongue is perfectly fine too. Maybe seven years is enough time to warrant a new version of any miniature. I have it on good authority that this is not the only one making a return appearance as a new miniature. But more on this another day.

The Return of the Lizard King - The Return of the Lizardfolk

There are a handful of third-party modules and supplements that feature reprints of some of my work, the first of which I am sharing today. I have been aware of them for a while (as most seem to have been released in 2017), but I recently tracked them all down as best I could to see what was used and if I could obtain a copy. Unfortunately, these particular products do not have physical versions. That said, I investigated to see if I could get details and screenshots of my work in the various products. Today I have for you the first of these 5E supplements, the Return of the Lizard King. To start things off, here is a look at the cover.

Return of the Lizard King with what I assume is the Lizard King that has returned.

As far as I can tell, I have a single piece that has made an encore appearance, and that is the Lizardfolk that I created for Volo's Guide to Monsters in 2016. It is not lost on me that 2016 was seven years ago, but it seems like I was working on this painting yesterday. This was, is, and will likely continue to be a favorite piece of mine and a full-circle moment for me with D&D. Here is my final painting for the Lizardfolk.

I have no idea how the licensing works with WotC, D&D, and third-party products, but it is fun to see stuff pop up in unexpected places. At least I was credited, so I could learn that my work was in the supplement. Here is a look at my art on the page of this product.

Lizardfolk on the page in the Return of the Lizard King. You might notice that they flipped the painting but did not address my signature, which is also now flipped. Oh well...

Monsters of the Multiverse - NOW with MORE MONSTERS!

I finally got my hands on a copy of Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse late last week when my comp copy arrived from the good folks at WotC. It is a great looking book, and I was interested to see how the four pieces I created for it were printed. Much to my surprise, I had a few additional monsters in the book, eight to be exact. To get things started, here is a look at the book.

Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse
for all your Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse needs!

When working on projects, I never know what the finished product will be or the scope of the content. I knew Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse was a new monster book, but I didn't know if it was more like a Monster Manual or something containing lore, character content, and monsters. While there are some new playable monster races to pick from, this book is a collection of existing and new monsters. If I still had time to play, this would be a definite purchase. It compiles multiple books' content AND includes new content, which is a win/win in my book. Here are the new monsters I painted for Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse.

Here are my monsters from previous books that have been collected and updated. The one thing that I noticed when looking at the book and monsters that spread across six to seven years of my career is that they, to my eyes, appear consistent. They are made by the same hand in the same style and maintain the same quality. This might not seem like much, but it shows that I have hit a workflow and artistic maturity that allows me to produce quality work consistently for my client. Only WotC know what other adventures these monsters will take, but when and if they do, I will share it with you!

D&D Monster Cards - Epic Monsters - Return of the Kraken, Morkoth, Sibriex, and Hellfire Engine

Within the past two to three years, give or take, a D&D Monster Card deck was released for Epic Monsters. Included in this deck are four of the monsters that I painted for various Dungeons & Dragons books. With the Epic Monsters Deck's release, my Kraken, Morkoth, Sibriex, and Hellfire Engine, get their own cards. This is the last such deck of monster cards I am aware of. Only time will tell if there will be more. Here is a look at the deck box and the cards.

Lizardfolk Miniature - The End of a 25 Year Journey

I have something special for you today. It is not every post that I can share the end of a twenty-five-year journey. Before I get ahead of myself, the main reason this post exists is that a miniature has been made that is based on the Lizardfolk painting I produced for the Dungeons & Dragons supplement, Volo's Guide to Monsters. While you may be familiar with this piece, from the first time I posted it or the process of its creation that I posted, let's begin with looking at the final painting.

This is still one of my favorite pieces that I painted for this book, and upon its completion, I was told that it was highly likely that it would eventually become a miniature. I was told that production was excited about it becoming a miniature, which meant it was possibly going to happen. Over the past few years, I was patient. I continuously checked the galleries of every released set of miniatures, and finally, after five years of waiting, my Lizardfolk is now a miniature. Here is the miniature in all its plastic glory.

Lizardfolk Miniature

Lizardfolk Miniature Turnaround

Why is this so special, or should I say more special than any other time one of my pieces or designs becomes a miniature? Well, that is where twenty-five years comes in and my love for reptilian monsters. From the space lizard Bossk from Star Wars, the Lizardmen from Dungeons & Dragons, or the snakes I had as pets as a child, my formative years were filled with reptiles. To this day, I would rather paint and draw scaly creatures over all others, even insects, which is saying a lot.

While I was aware of Dungeons & Dragons from its early days, I didn't start playing it until Second Edition. A group of people I had considered friends were playing, and I was eventually brought into the game. None of the payer races or types really struck a chord with me, but by chance, I was shown more options with the Complete Book of Humanoids, and that changed everything. I played frog creatures, dinosaur creatures, but first and foremost, I played a Lizardman by the name of Targus.

Through Targus, I went on many adventures and annoyed my fellow players to no end. I played Targus as an innocent alien, a being ignorant to the world of man and elf. He didn't really understand shops, buying things, and money. He didn't understand cooking food and why everyone else didn't begin feasting once an animal or man was slain. I played Targus the way I thought a Lizardman would around a group of elves, dwarves, and men. I had fun, and eventually, I was pressured to roll up a dwarf. I made sure they wished for Targus's return.

Naturally, I drew most of my characters back then. I depicted Targus twice on paper, once as a freshly found warrior of the swamp and later as a more mature team member. I always preferred my first version of Targus. In 1996 Targus was born, and in 2016 when I was asked to depict the new playable Lizardfolk, I was so excited. It meant I could now shape how people saw their liard character, and I could paint Targus as I thought he would be today. A span of twenty years separates them, but to me, they are one and the same. I simply did a lot of practicing in between.

There are back again - The first twenty years.

And now, another five years have passed, and my painting is now a miniature, completing the journey. It was the miniatures that were my gateway into the game. Now that Targus is a miniature my game, my character has become part of everyone else's game. I couldn't be happier with the miniature either. From the gourd bottle, hooks, and fish on his belt to the armor and weapons, this miniature is incredibly faithful. The open mouth is a nice change, and due to molding and assembly, I assumed the second sword would be removed.

The final five years of the journey.

The life of an artist is a funny thing and strange as well. You never know what the next assignment will be or where it will take you, or where you can take it. Twenty-five years ago, I would never imagine in my wildest dreams that a D&D character I rolled up would eventually be in a book or become a miniature. While it is in no way official, know that when you see the Lizardfolk miniature, that is it really Targus, and he is ready for adventure!

That's all for another exciting week on the blog. See you back here next week! Until then...

D&D Monster Cards - Volo's Guide to Monsters - Return of the Gazer and Yuan-Ti Broodguard

Within the past two years, give or take, a D&D Monster Card deck was released for Volo's Guide to Monsters. Included in this deck are two of the monsters that I painted for Volo's Guide to Monsters. Where are the rest, you ask? That is a story or another day. That said, I think these are really cool sets. If I could still make the time, let alone be near other humans, to play Dungeons & Dragons, this is precisely the kind of accessory that I LOVED as a DM. Quick and easy monster access. No flipping pages, no marking up a book to find what you need, you can simply pull the cards ahead of time and have them on the ready for encounters. The cards have images of the monsters and stats on the back—an all in one go-to source. Okay, enough up selling the product. I have mentioned before that while being in a book is fantastic, there is just something extra special about having my work as a miniature or a card. Maybe because it is a singular focused incarnation. I am really not sure, but I do love holding them in my hands. With the release of Volo's Guide to Monsters Monster Deck, my Gazer and Yuan-Ti Broodguard ger their own cards. Here is a look at the deck box and the cards.

The Gazer was a personal favorite from my work on Volo's, and I am always happy to see it make the rounds. It has not been in two books, a miniature, and now a card. Seems like I am not its only fan. Here again, is the final art that I created of these two monsters.
